University of Technology Nursing e-Portfolio: Philosophy & Standards

This report presents a student's professional e-portfolio assignment, specifically addressing Sections 3 and 4, which delve into the core aspects of nursing practice. Section 3: Personal Nursing Philosophy:
Professional nursing belief is said to be the nursing statement that aims to
evaluate the belief, ethics, and values of the nurse which is related to the treatment and
care of the patient. The nurse working in the health care setting should have value and
belief that aids to enhance the care of the patient which will eventually enhance the
health outcomes of the patient (Kim 2015).
According to bachelor of nursing of University of Technology (2019), the nurse
should embody the professional disposition which is committed to equity, sustainability
and the excellence. In order to do that the professional identity of the nurse should be
demonstrated which helps in acknowledging the value and belief of the nurse as a
therapeutic agent.
The nurse should believe that, in order to provide quality care to the patient,
engaging in the person centered care is one of the best approaches, as it considers the
needs and preferences of the patient. In order to engage actively with the patient,
collaboration and communication with the patient should be best method according to
the nurse based on their values and beliefs (Casimiro et al. 2015).
My value of the nursing is more focused on the use of the knowledge both
personal and professional and using it effectively with the patient in order to provide
best treatment to the patient. According to my nursing values, I always try to ensure that

the indigenous population of the Australia and the other vulnerable population should
be treated with equal respect and dignity.
Section 4: Professional Nursing Standards (500 words)
The professional nursing standards are formulated either by the government or
the health care authorities in order to provide safe and enhanced care to the patient
(Halcomb et al. 2016) Maintenance of the nursing standard in the health care setting is
extremely necessary as it aids to guide and promote the clinical practice.
As the Australian community is diverse, hence for the registered nurse, it is
important to follow the nursing standard formulated by the NMBA to provide patient
centered care and safe care in the nursing practice (McCormick and Saba 2015). It is the
responsibility of the nurse to enhance the health outcomes of the patient. Health
outcomes of the patient can be enhanced by providing safe environment and quality care
to the patient according to their needs and preferences, which is mentioned in the
standard 6 of the registered nursing practice.
Standard 6: The nurse should provide responsive quality, appropriate and safe nursing
practice (Nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au 2019).
According to the standard 6 of the registered nursing standard, the registered
nurse should provide ethical and legal goal directed action, while taking care of the
patient. In this standard, the nurse should provide safe and quality practice within the
healthcare in order to achieve better goals and health outcomes
(Gardner et al. 2016). During the treatment of the patient, the ethical and legal issues
related to the treatment of the patient are taken into consideration such as the privacy
and autonomy of the patient should be maintained. For example, before taking any
decision regarding the treatment, the nurse should consult with the patient and the
families. To provide safe environment to the patient, discrimination based on the race,

caste, gender age and disability should be avoided. For example, it is observed that, the
indigenous populations of the Australia experiences discrimination, which should be
avoided by the nurse in order to provide safe environment to the patient. Apart from
these, practice within the scope is also necessary for the nurse to provide quality and
appropriate nursing practice (Nakkeeran and Nakkeeran 2018).
Apart from these, the registered nurse should educate the enrolled nurse about
the different aspects of practice that might help them in providing safe, responsive and
appropriate care to the patient (Graban 2018). The standard 6 of nursing provides
effective time and supervision to the nurse so that they can provide effective and safe
environment to the patient by the help of different strategies (Rankin et al. 2016). To
avoid any further legal complication in the treatment of the patient, the nurse should use
relevant guidelines, policies, legislation and regulations, such as aged care act 1997
(Australian Government Department of Health 2019).
The formulation of the care plan should be evidence based, so that the health
outcome of the patient should improve (Ellis 2019). If it is observed that the patient is
not getting the appropriate care, the actual and potential risk that might contribute to the
delivery of the patient care below standard should be identified and reported and
appropriate process which help to enhance the delivery of appropriate care (Johnston
and Facn 2019)
