Introduction
Teamwork can establish proficiency of professionalism in new nurses. Nursing is a
health care profession which worked on the recovery of the health of the patients and
maintains the quality of life. Professionalism is very important for the nurses as it affects the
patients, co-workers and the organisation. Professionalism means bringing quality care to the
patients with the decency of respect values, responsibility, teamwork and ethics of the
workplace (Ivanova, Kokina, & Acienė, 2018).
This essay is based on a case study related to professional nursing and teamwork. It is
highlighted in the essay that transition into a registered nurse is often challenging for a new
nurse in the care of the patients individually, in compare to a professional nurse and
teamwork will be cooperative in it. Teamwork is essential for providing high- quality care as
healthcare is multifaceted unit and it requires multiple talented individuals to coordinate.
Multiple nurses as high functioning teams can support each other in a stressful time and also
offer better support and care to the patients.
Critical Analysis
This is expected from the new graduate nurses to demonstrate proficiency in
teamwork to be professional in nursing. Nurses work to care for patients who are wounded
or sick; they can deliver care to their patients effectively with work in a team or when band
together. As provided by Coyne, Comiskey and Lalor teamwork is important for the entire
unit of nurses and health specialists, to improving the health of a patient and to done the right
job (Coyne, Comiskey, & Lalor, 2016). A nurse can be an exclusive team member by
learning from others as it will help to reach the goal to deliver ideal healthcare and preventing
the errors from occurring.
Teamwork in nurses is beneficial in many ways to their co-workers, health
organization and the patients. Teamwork of nurses can improve satisfaction and outcome of

the health care of a patient by communicating on a regular basis about the therapies for
treatment (Real, Bardach, & Bardach, 2017). If nurses do not communicate to the co-workers
regarding the health care about any patient or do not work in a team, they may not give
proper care to the patients as they will not able to maintain the daily records of health
progress. Teamwork keeps aware new nurses about the current treatment tactics so the exact
progress of health care treatment of a patient can be easy to monitor.
Nurses get higher satisfaction in their job if they will comfortable in doing their daily
tasks and it will happen only if they work as a team to help each other. With teamwork,
nurses can increase their professional accountability. According to Philips, if nurses have
attentive supervisors as a team partner who continually assesses and check the work done by
them, they can avoid the safety errors, create from the inability of effective communication
which can lead the healthcare providers and the organization to great legal consequences and
risks (Phillips, 2016).
Work engagement is very important for an employee at any organization and
teamwork can be beneficial in create work engagement. Work engagement among nurses is
very much related to the relationships created in the workplace. Bolino, Turnley and
Anderson indicates that when employees start knowing each other, they better contribute to
the work of their co-workers and new nurses can get benefit from it by reducing the
difficulties rather give up on them (Bolino, Turnley, & Anderson, 2016). Nurses, with high
work engagement, are usually provided good healthcare with more motivation.
Contribution of teamwork is very high to be a professional employee. It fosters
creativity in work by learning the tactics of modern ways and uses of technologies. Maximum
knowledge shared by different workers help in learning new skills which one can use in the
whole career (Drucker, 2018). In this way, employees can grow their professional skills very
comfortably. Supportive strengths build when employees work together and help the workers

to outshine as an individual professional worker in the organization (Pickles, Lacey, & King,
2019).
Talent and creativity of the person always differ from the other, and the co-workers
might very virtuous and creative which gave a chance to the person to improve skills by
learning from other team members, according to need. Teamwork contributes to building
trusts among the workers despite occasional disagreement as one person is relying on other
people which establishes a strong relationship (Ellis, 2018). Effective team workers enjoy
their work by sharing a strong bond.
Teamwork teaches the determination of conflicts or resolution skills. When working
alone, it will probably not allow an employee to take the projects or tasks with risks, while
working in a team allowed to take the risk as there is a support of co-workers or an entire
group. Taking risks can increase the chances of getting success and the team members will
start producing revolutionary ideas with no hesitation.
Discussion
There is always some issue increased before applying any practices in the workplace
especially to the new workers. Nurses have also some issues in understanding about working
as a part of a team. New graduate nurses feel worrying during the transition to practice and it
leads the novice nurses to burnout with many negative effects which include turnover and job
dissatisfaction (Laschinger, Cummings, & Leiter, 2016). Patricia Benner has theorized five
stages of being a professional nursing which are novice, progressive beginner,
knowledgeable, proficient and expert. A new graduate transition can be a professional nurse
with a positive work environment, support, constructive working relationships and respect for
the requirements of learning, on the other side burnout and bullying are workplace stressors
and these have an adverse effect on new nurses.

By accessing appropriate support, the transition to being a professional midwife will
be smooth and clinical practices become safer. Nurses should understand the factors which
are involved in working as a part of a team that influence their transition to being a
professional (Spehar, Frich, & Kjekshus, 2015). There are some other factors which impact
on nursing like situational factors, workplace relationship, work stressors, job-related
outcomes and personal factors. Nurses do require the effective resources or strategies to
enhance their transition because in present time they need to do multiple tasks for good health
care of the patient. A nurse should be a good communicator and for effective performance,
should ready to cooperate with the healthcare team so they ensure about the successful patient
outcomes.
Good workplace relationship can be a big help in it and on the other hand incivility in
a relationship at the workplace can be a stressor for it. Nurses should learn to be a holistic
caregivers and should address the patient with its spiritual, cultural and mental needs because
increasing diversity in the growing population requires cultural awareness and sensitivity in
the nurses towards the healthcare of patients (Paiva, Carvalho, & Kolcaba, 2015). Patients
may prefer the care according to their gender and religion so nurses should know about the
different backgrounds and also, they must be respectful.
With the advanced technology, healthcare providers or doctors are using new
apparatuses or devices every day and medicines are personalized with these devices so nurses
are required to instruct the patients about this enhancing traditional care. Without
instructions, some patients may not comfortable to use these devices due to lack of
knowledge to use them like blood pressure monitor device and others so a nurse must be a
good instructor for these patients.
Code of ethics is the most important things in any workplace as they make the
employees do the duties under the laws and policies of the organisation. The code states that

the nurses should value the health and should provide quality care to all patients (Ling, Yu, &
Guo, 2019). They should respect the people who approach them and show kindness to varied
people with the value of their diversity. They must inform the patients about their health care
requirements and should respect the decision of the patients. They should maintain the culture
of safety in the workplace for the co-workers and health care of the patients. They must
inform about any illegal work done by someone, at the workplace and promote health and
security with the sustainable environment of social, ecological and economical.
NSQHS standards aim to protect the people from any kind of harm during health care
service and provide quality health provision; it provides the care which consumers can expect
from the organizations of healthcare services (Morrison, Cope, & Murray, 2018). NMBA has
stated some standards of nursing practices that nurses should critically think and analyse the
nursing practice, they should engage in health-related and professional relationships. Nurses
should maintain the standards of NMBA to become a professional one like participates in
learning as long as they work, conduct assessments comprehensively, develop a nursing
practice plan, provide safety and appropriate quality service and evaluation of outcomes
(DeLaune, Ladner, & McTier, 2016). It is clear from above discussion that teamwork is very
important for both the new or professional nurses as it helps in the growth of their career in
many ways.
Conclusion
Nurses can develop their skills at any phase of the career which are valuable for them
by working in the professional atmosphere. It is very essential for student nurses to
understand the importance of working in a team before enter the nursing field and also if they
are already working there. It is concluded that trust on the team workers makes a person feel
free and it allows to emerge the ideas. Without trust employees or an organization crumble
and fail to achieve success. As it is stated before that in a team, a group of different people

can combine their unique perspectives to do effective work. It is concluded that a new
graduate transition becomes a professional nurse with a positive work environment, support,
constructive working relationships and respect for the requirements of learning, on the other
side burnout and bullying are workplace stressors and these have an adverse effect on new
nurses. Standards of NMBA and NSQHS are very valuable for nurses and the healthcare
organisation, and provide help in nursing practices to give quality care to the patients.
