We have seen that every professional has their scope of practice, and it is their ethical and
legal responsibility to work within their respective scope of practice. However, in healthcare,
these ethical and legal responsibilities often seem to be violated due to emergencies. Not capable
of working within the scope of practice is considered professional challenge for the registered
nurse especially for the newly graduated registered nurse. It creates difficulty for their clinical
practice and also hinders the patient-centred care in healthcare sector.
By observing the situation, I have noted that it becomes barrier to achieve appropriate
and safe person-centred care and along with that, it also increases the chance of future clinical
and ethical complications for the nurse. In case of graduated registered nurse, they are working
outside their scope of practice increase the risk of clinical error in the healthcare setting. Hence,
to avoid such adverse impact, it is crucial to consider the severity of the clinical issue and as per
my knowledge strategies should also be formulated to overcome the problem.
I have observed that poor knowledge regarding the scope of practice also contributes to
the development of clinical error and improper patient care. Hence, to provide safe and
appropriate care to the patient, the Graduated Registered Nurse should be educated and make
them more aware about their scope of practice and also about the consequences if avoided or
ignored during their clinical practice. It will make about the values and will work within their
scope of practice. They should also be suggested with the strategies such as, before indulging in
any task which is out of their expertise, and they should consult with us. It will help them in
providing by working within their scope of practice.
Apart from these, another strategy which can aid in resolving the issue according to me,
is making the experienced registered nurse more aware of the professional issue and its impact
on patient care. We should guide the newly graduated registered nurse to work within the scope

of practice to avoid any future harm to the patient, and different strategies should be suggested to
the GRN during their clinical practice to deliver improved and safe patient-centred care to the
patient.
One of the leading causes observed for the occurrence of the clinical issue is the absence
of health care staff during the night shift. Due to the scarcity of the health care staff the newly
graduated registered nurses have to work apart from their scope of practice. Hence, to avoid that,
the number of health care staff both novice and experienced should be increased during the night
shift. The nurse supervisor should delegate task to the other healthcare staff that are within their
scope of practice and also assist them in achieving patient-centred care within the healthcare
setting.
