Approach to Professional Nursing Practice
Profile
I am a nursing student who just finished a four year degree in nursing from the Australian
College of Nursing. This course requires nursing practitioner students to undertake a minimum
of two week clinical placement which I recently completed at St Vincent’s Hospital as pediatrics
intern. I have the following skills which I believe are important in the nursing profession:
empathy, compassion, analytical skills, interpersonal skills, integrity and professionalism.
Personally I am a people’s person and I thrive well in group situations. I have good
communication and listening skills which I believe define a good nurse. I am also culturally
diverse and I have taken time to learn about the different cultures in Australia and the issues that
revolve around them like the indigenous populations. During my clinical placement, these skills
were reflected in my work which made me win the award of the best intern in the hospital for
that quarter. I also have attended the following short courses which I believe are relevant to
nursing: Certificate in Basic Emergency Obstetric care from CPD, Hospital administration from
CPD, and Certificate II in Health Services Assistance from All Health Training. My career goals
are to achieve the required nursing certification for practicing as a nurse and to upgrade my
nursing skills to advanced practitioner nurse after certification with major specialization in
Pediatrics. I am looking forward to finishing my licensing exam so that I can start practicing as a
registered nurse.
Strategies to achieve compliance with NMBA

Description
The nursing program entails a nurse acquiring the required academic qualification and
certification for one to work as nurse. This entails different learning content like theories, models
and case studies to understand the clinical environment. One of these readings is the nurse Carol
Perks reading which showed the role of the nurse as a community advocate who transformed the
lives of people in Laos through her nursing care. The nurse became the history of most women in
the locality due to her interventions maternal and child nutrition among the Khmu ethnic group.
The NMBA provides standards of practice that nurses are suppsoed to follow when dealing with
patients to increase the quakity of life of the patient. Through the nursing care approach, she
managed to teach mothers using patient-centered care and evidence-based approaches to teach
the best way achieving improved nutrition.
Feelings
As a nursing student, I am motivated by the nursing practice and I feel that this profession can be
used to transform the life of people in the society apart from treatment.
Evaluation
Nurses exist as the link between the patient and other medical professionals. This means that
they spend most time with the patients and if they can apply patient-centered care and evidence-
based approaches, they can achieve the best nursing outcomes within clinical situations.
However, I think I need to work on my individualized care and evidence-based care abilities and
knowledge to improve my nursing skills.

APPROACH TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE 7
Analysis
I think that by developing therapeutic and research skills, I can be able to adequately determine
which evidence-based approach and patient-centered care that specifically fits the needs of the
patient that I will be dealing with.
Conclusion
This learning activity has enabled me to understand the role of a nurse in a clinical environment
and improving the quality of life of patients. This means that I need to work on my nursing skills
as a way of becoming a better nursing professional.
Action Plan
In my future nursing practice, I have to work on understanding the NMBA standards, research
skills and therapeutic skills to understand the standards of care and application of clinical skills.
From the reading on Nurse Perks, it is evident that a nurse needs to have clinical knowledge and
an understanding of the evidence-based methods when dealing with patients. Stevens (2013)
suggets that evidence based practices provides the best way for dealing with clinical issues
within the nursig environmnet. This means that I have to appraise my skills and abilities in
different nursing areas to develop the best clinical outcomes required.
