PROFESSIONALISM AND ETHICS
Introduction
Values are identified as goals and ideologies which establish behaviour and provide a
foundation for decision-making. Nursing is a profession embedded in professional ethics and
ethical values. Nursing performance is based on these values. The following essay will
provide a reflection of professional and personal values to professional path of nursing.
Body
In recent times, nursing professionals are required to have knowledge and
understanding related to professional values as standards in order to deliver safe and excellent
ethical care. According to Poorchangizi et al. (2019), nurses’ perspective on professional
values influences their competence of judgement and patient care. As a professional with
nursing qualification, I have understood the importance of having imperative professional
responsibility towards the work I do. To my understanding, the nurse has a duty of self-
respect and morality to me and to the individuals around me which primarily includes my
patients. Professional responsibility in nursing refers to the moral and principled obligations
permeating the profession. Furthermore, in nursing profession, I believe that my
responsibility is to accept personal responsibility for my actions and decision-making.
Additionally, nurses are needed to espouse compassion and show respect for self-
determination of patients irrespective of their ethnicity, age and gender. Thus, while being
engaged this nursing profession, I rely on having self-respect, and respect for other and
maintain continual professional growth and commitment towards lifelong learning. As a
nursing professional, I have embraced teamwork approach as another imperative value to
care delivery with effective communication skill as well as shared care coordination.
Teamwork contributes directly to responsibility in nursing (Kim, 2018).
On the other hand, nurses typically experience stresses due to their work setting,
psychological or social circumstances. I have embraced stress management as another

professional value and emphasize on effective communication with my patients and
clinicians. This approach has helped me to obtain increased understanding and lessen fears
and misconceptions. Meanwhile, while other values might be successful in nursing, there can
be identified certain influences of altruism which improves experience as a nurse (Slettmyr,
Schandl & Arman, 2019). To my understanding, nursing is a highly crucial job as we have to
keep a track with the routine monitoring of patient essentials like blood pressure, temperature
and also establish strong rapport with patients where nurses encounter altruism.
Personal values are internalized from the society and cultural patterns. By embracing
spirituality as a personal value in my profession, I have been able to achieve the need of
supporting and applying a person-centred approach. Meanwhile, by taking on the act of
forgiveness I have been able to embrace love and lessen the fear that I will be able to conquer
if I successfully overcome the past. Practicing forgiveness and considering its importance
within the professional standard helps to yield the art of nursing as the spiritual practice.
Humility allows nurses to set aside ego and appreciate things which others can offer. By
embracing this value I have been able to put emphasis on my patients’ needs and consider
support as a prospect to obtain novel knowledge.
Conclusion
Thus, as nursing professional, I must be able to embrace professional and personal
values while making decisions and confronting with the incipient ethical confrontations in the
healthcare domain.
