Critical analysis of relationship between ’being a professional’ and ‘Working as part of a team’
INTRODUCTION
Professionalism means to follow code of ethics, standards of an organization, fulfil respective
roles and responsibilities, and safeguard health and wellbeing of others. In healthcare sector it is
important for all the healthcare professionals to work in a professional manner (Franz & et.al.
2018). There is a strong relationship between working as a part of a team and being a
professional. In other words, an individual cannot work as a part of a team without being a
professional. This assignment will lay emphasis on ‘critical analysis and discussion of
relationship between the theoretical construct of being a professional and working as a part of a
team’.
CRITICAL ANALYSIS
In healthcare organizations it is important for staff members to build a professional
relationship with their colleagues as well as with the patients. Each employee working in a
healthcare sector should know what being a professional means and how to enhance their work
and learn new things being a professional (Collins, Dumas & Moyer, 2017). Being a professional
means to adhere to the codes, standard of conduct, nursing or midwife ethics and performance.
There is a strong relationship between working in a team and being professional. One can only
work within a team efficiently when they understand what being a professional mean and start
behaving accordingly. For an undergraduate registered nurse who is about to start their career as
a registered nurse, it is extremely important for them to work within team or work as a part of a
team professionally. There are four main principles on the basis of which nursing is based
completely. First is to take care of people, treat them as individuals and respect their dignity.
Second is to work as a part of a team with others, so they can promote and protect wellbeing and
health of their patients, their families and the community of which they are a part of. Third is to
provide a high standard of care and practise at all the times. And last is to be honest, open, act
with integrity and uphold reputation of their profession. It is important and a compulsion for all
the nurses to adhere these principles in order to become a professional nurse. A healthcare
organization has various departments and each department has a team to be worked on. It is one
of basic moral responsibility of a nurse to work and put efforts with all the healthcare teams. It is

only possible if they find themselves as a part of a team and work together with them as a part of
a team.
As a newly registered nurse, it is quite important to gain understanding, experience and
clinical knowledge for the nurses so that they can become more reflective, analytical and critical
towards their profession (Dietl & Gomez-Gonzalez, 2017). It is only possible for them when they
start working as a part of a team. It is important for newly registered nurses as it will help them
to develop professionalism, develop more confidence, understand clinical setting and ways in
which one can manage their time and work efficiently. As one can learn new things from
different team members and become a known and efficient midwife or nurse. Working as a part
of a team can also help nurses to understand importance of being a professional nurse and its
effect on their work as well as on professional. It can impact a nurse working and understand in
negative manner as well if they try to avoid others avoid to bother anyone because not working
as a part of a team will not help them to develop professionalism, ways in which one can manage
their time and work. Effective working relationship can help a nurse to understand their duty as a
nurse, principles they need to adhere and manage time (Hernández-Marrero & Pereira, 2015).
For this new registered nurse should try to develop trust with their colleagues, Work with the
team, respect others, communicate clearly and concisely with others so that effective working
characteristics can be build that are extremely important to fulfil responsibilities of a nurse, act
with integrity, uphold reputation of their profession as a nurse and fulfil their expectations of
being a newly graduated nurse and midwife by understand their roles and responsibilities
towards their patients, clinical duties and organization, gain experience and knowledge so that
they can bring continuous improvement within themselves. For a newly registered nurse who has
recently competed their last year of undergraduate registered nurse, it is important for them to
work within a team together with experienced staff members within a team. This will help them
to understand importance of working within shifts, settle down in the new work environment,
understand what being a professional is and gain extra support required by them to become an
excellent midwife or nurse (Whitehurst & Rowlands, 2017). Being a professional while working
with different team members can help new nurses to settle down in the new environment,
understand their limitations and deal with it, understand each healthcare team, their work, roles
and importance.

DISCUSSION
It has been observed that working in a team helps in depicting importance of working as a
part of a team. Working as a part of team helps in understanding importance of a team, roles and
responsibilities of each team member and work together by coordinating with each other. It also
helps an individual to understand occupational values, become cooperative, increase knowledge
and understanding required to complete a task efficiently. According to a research if an
individual wants to develop professional skills and work efficiently with other it is important to
define roles and responsibilities of each team member so that they can build a relationship and
work professionally and ethically with other team members. This is because a team is not just a
bunch of people with some title, a team consist of few roles and responsibilities which helps in
accomplishing a task. In healthcare organizations it is extremely important for each and every
team member to understand their roles and duties (Cain, Frazer & Kilaberia, 2019). In healthcare
sector it plays a vital role especially for nurses as they are the one who directly/indirectly interact
and communicate with patients and clinical staff members and facilities without degrading their
work and responsibilities. Importance of working as a part of a team can be explained with the
help of Belbin team role theory. According to this theory there are nine team roles that together
builds and effective team. Each role has their own strengths and weaknesses that helps in
building an effective communication within team members. This theory helps in pin pointing
individual importance of each type of roles within a team.
According to Belbin theory an individual can play more than one role while working as a
part of a team. Nine roles that exist within a team are: resource investigator, team worker,
coordinator, plant, specialist, monitor evaluator, implementor, shaper and complete finisher.
Resource investigator uses their inquisitive nature and find ideas and bring them back to the
team. Team worker works within the team, identifies work required to be done and complete it
on behalf of the team (McIlveen, Perera & Blustein, 2018). Co-ordinator focus on team
objectives, focus and explain team members their work so that complete work is done
appropriately by each team member. Plant is a highly creative member of a team who is good at
solving problems in unconventional ways. Monitor evaluator provides a logical eve and make
impartial judgements whenever required and also weighs in a dispassionate manner. Specialist is
a person who brings in depth knowledge of key areas to the team. Shaper ensures that team is
moving and does not lose focus and momentum. Implementer helps in planning a workable

strategy which can be carried out in an easy manner. Completer finisher helps in finding out if
there is any kind of errors and whether quality of the task has been maintained or not. In
healthcare organizations there are different departments and each department has a team who
work particularly in that department. A newly registered nurse needs to work with each team and
different shifts in order to learn and understand their work, roles and responsibilities. So, if teams
working within individual departments are formed using this theory where work of each member
is defined. It becomes much easier and comfortable for the nurses to work as a part of a team,
gain required clinical knowledge and become a professional nurse or midwife. It will also help
them to develop a professional behaviour and work professionally.
CONCLUSION
From the above assignment it has been summarized that in order to become an efficient
newly graduate nurse or midwife it is important to work within teams with a proper professional
behavior. It helps them to adjust in new environments, build confidence, gain knowledge,
become competent in each task and gain experience which would help them to become an
efficient nurse or midwife.
