Introduction
This report is based on the review of an article named “The integration of project management
and organizational change management is now a necessity”. The purpose of this article is to
understand the importance of integration between OCM and PM. This article is written by Henry
Hornstein.
This article review will include the reason and intention of the article along with the highlights of
contents. This will also cover the research methodology of the article and the findings of the
article. On the basis of review, recommendations will also be cover. At last it will include the
lessons learned from this article review. The paper includes enough evidence to support the thing
that all the organizations should acknowledge and understand the importance of change
management in the success of the project.

Intention
The intention of this article is to understand the importance of integration between PM and
OCM. This refers that the OCM should be included in the training of project managers. IPMA
and PMI also support to include OCM education in the project managers’ certification process.
This also shows the difference between the traditional environment and present environment.
With the help of examples, it will describe the before and after effects of integration between
organizational change management and project management [1].
Content
As per the paper, most of the literature does not include the role of organizational change. The
article contains a review of various literature which covers project management, PMBoK, and
process of project management. Awareness about the OCMs impact on the success of project is
has been identified also. It has been said by the author that educators like PMI must expose the
project managers to the change adoption issues and influence on the project success, budget an
timeline. Educators should support the PMs to develop the knowledge and skills around the
change management in organization. The article also stat that the PMBoK also incorporate
change management but that is never acknowledged in explicit manner. According to the other
literature review in this article, knowledge area of PMBoK does not address the human elements
of change and the impact of these components on the success of project. Change is an important
part of each and every phase of project development [2]. Recommendations and observations are
focused on the change leadership importance. It has been identified that traditionally none of the
certifiers or educators of project managers have made many efforts for the acknowledgment
about the influence of change in organization. Instead of this, integrated change control is limited
to change request addressing. There is often competition between change managers and project
managers which always acts as an obstacle in the project success. Change control does not
include the human-based issues but covered other aspects that might affect the project
management areas. The term change management was basically used to refer a formal process to
introduce and approve the changes in project plan. Some of the organizations have started the
integration of change management and project management to understand different aspects of

project management planning. It has been realized that the project management methodology and
discipline can be integrated with the change management’s culture and forward visioning. It has
been appreciated by that the impact of organizational changes on the outcome of project cannot
be ignored by the project managers. It has been also identified that the management literature is
full up with the project failure examples. These project failures are caused by the failure to
properly handle and manage the issues of organizational change [1]. Thus it is necessary to focus
on the decentralized functionality, it is required by the project managers to understand the
changes in user requirements and provide continuous attention towards the change management.
It has been clearly demonstrated in the article that the success of the project must not be limited
to project management. Some recent literature identified the awareness about the OCM’s impact.
The organizational change management has continued a small overview in the literature of
project management. Although the standards of the program and project management address the
management of stakeholders and communication but required skills and knowledge for the
management of behavioral and organizational change are not specifically addressed by these
standards [2]. It has been implied that the agencies or organizations that provide certification to
the project managers, should include the relevant content about the management of
organizational change. In literature of this article, importance of engagement of employee is
clearly identified. The ADKAR model of PMI failed to focus on the people and don’t consider
that change can be complex. A project can be successfully implemented when the users of the
project are resistant to change in work and also if change occurs then the way of change
management affects the quality of project outcome.
Findings
As per this article and literature reviews in it, project implementation causes change and the
success of the project depends on how this project is managed. Various methodologies and
terminologies are used by change management and project management. Their impact and
consequences can occur in different organizational parts and have distinct backgrounds. The
success of project is multi-dimensional [3]. That means the project success is not only dependent
on the performance of project but also affected by the organization change management. It is
suggested in the paper that competition between PM and CM (change manager) can be an
obstacle in the success of project. It has been identified in the project that the logical place to
address the issues of OCM is reference name “integrated change control “in PMBoK as it drives,

scope of project, cost of project, risks in project, quality of project, etc. It has been also identified
that the change requests are able to affect the schedule of project, cost of project, risks in project,
project deliverables quality and hamper the satisfaction level of customer. It is required by the
project management to consider the complete system’s lifecycle. Change management is also a
subset of organizational development. Organizational development refers to the renewal process
of the structure, direction, and abilities of the organization to serve the evolving requirement of
the clients.
Methodology
The research methodology used in this article is the journal review. The author of this article
reviewed supported literature to draw outcomes and recommendations. The article covered the
points from different kinds of literature in a good way. This type of research methodology
provides a depth review of the topic and helps to find a suitable outcome.
Recommendation
After the review of this article, it has been recommended to consider the social system’s
importance. This can play a major role in the success of the project and if ignored then can be a
cause of project failure. It is recommended that the educators should provide training in such a
way that it is aligned with the change management and its impact on the success and other
factors of the project [2].
Lessons learned
From this article, it has been learned that the integration of change management and project
management plays an important role in the process of success.
Educators should support the PMs to develop the knowledge and skills around the change
management in an organization.
It is recommended in the article that the entry-level or junior practitioners of the project
should undertake the education, training, and development which provide guidelines for the
use of implementation practices of change [1].
Organizations should support the inclusion of change management resources.
Change is always a part of the organization, at both strategic and operational stage.
Project managers must be familiar with change management tools and techniques [3].

organizational change management and project management. This article emphasizes on the
importance of this integration on the success of project. The chosen article includes review of
multiple journals. As per article, project implementation causes change and the success of project
depends on how this project is managed. The success of project is multi-dimensional. Educators
should support the PMs to develop the knowledge and skills around the change management in
organization. It is recommended to consider the importance of social importance to decrease the
chances of project failure.
