When it comes to evaluation of any project it requires effective communication
whereby information has to be conveyed to project participants. In regard to the setup of
project management reporting, communication is channelled in the form of reports. As a
result, in the perspective of project management reporting, there are different reports which
are carefully organised and then conveyed to the relevant people or groups such as project
teams, sponsors, and stakeholders. This reports communicate the proceedings of the project
in an effective, clear and price manner. Therefore, in respect to this sense, status report plays
a key role among project managers to inform project teams, steering committee and sponsors
concerning the project progress (Kerzner, 2019). The status report comprises various aspects
such as risks associated with the project, essential business efforts, timeframe as well as
resources required to develop the project. When the status report is complete it ensure
accountability and ownership of the project. Therefore, status reports are used for several
purposes in a project such as mitigating risks, tracking progress of project activities, and
identifying issues that are likely to impact the project success (Harrison, & Lock, 2017). In
light of this statement, this article will discuss different report status utilised by project
managers in a project and the pitfalls and challenges related to every status report.
Furthermore, it also discuss various dissimilarities amongst each status report given to
steering committee, sponsors and project teams.
Different types of status reports in project management
There are several status reports used in project management, which include project
health report, risk evaluation report, baseline report, and timesheet report.

A project health report is used to provide a comprehensive picture showing the
progress of the project. A project health report is an effective strategy used by the project
manager to share the development that have been attained on screens in meetings with project
teams, sponsors and stakeholders. This report is significant to project management because it
enables every stakeholder to weigh the extent to which a project has reached by looking at
events completed (Boyle, 2017). Also, this report outline project activities that lagging
behind and those that have been accomplished.
Risk evaluation report
A risk evaluation report as the name suggest it is used to allow project manager, teams
and stakeholders the opportunity to identify, recognise and categorised risks likely to hamper
the project before it even commence. When these risks are identified and recognised they are
analysed and categorised based on their severity and potential of happening. As a result,
categorising of the risks enables the project manager to classify them based on priority of
their severity impact on project success (Taniguchi & Onosato, 2018). Despite the fact that
risk evaluation is essential in regard to the project success, it is a challenging task. Some of
the challenge related to risk evaluation include risk identification, and lack of ability to
precisely forecast the project future. Determining risk is very challenging particularly when it
comes to identifying risks.
Baseline report
Baseline report compare between the initial schedule of the project against the real-
time project timeframe. Therefore, the baseline report allow the project manager and project
teams to learn from the past and scope out the current project. Accordingly, a baseline report
is beneficial in project management since it illustrates the manner in which delays or changes
affect the overall schedule of the project (Kliem & Ludin, 2019). However, the challenge of

lack of a baseline report it that it can result in delaying schedule. Thus, this could lead to
delay in procurement as well as delivery of resources and materials.
Timesheet report
A timesheet report gives stakeholders, project managers and steering committee all
project activities under their command. Timesheet report is a vital project management report
which should always feature in the list of reports. The timesheet contain all details that
appertain to time that the project response should be put in while working on the project.
Therefore, a timesheet report is a critical tool for project management reporting that allow the
project manager to check various details such as the time that every team members has
invested, work accomplished on a given month, week or day, accountability of every team
member against the task allotted to them, and underutilisation or overburdening of resource
on the project (Kerzner, 2017). This report should be calculated by project managers to the
team members. The project manager can resort on using timesheet project management tool
to track time of a project. At the same time, a timesheet can also be used by the project teams
to accurately track their time. Hence, in this manner a timesheet allows project managers a
general concept regarding the time as well as effort utilised to complete a certain task and the
whole project.
In regard to the dissimilarity between status report delivered for sponsors, teams and
steering committee, status report offered for teams is provided to them to display what has
been completed and what is yet to be completed. The status report provided for sponsors is
used inform them regarding the variations in the plan of the project. The status provided for
steering committee illustrate the tasks that have been completed against the initial projected
plan.
