1. Introduction
Case study
The case study here reflects the problem of a client and contractor regarding a project of air-
cooling system made for a building where the preference of the client was not the quality of the
project but the cost of the product. This caused the adjustments with the project quality and this
increased the overall cost of the project maintenance and caused problems between the client and
contractor (Marchewka, 2014).
Motivation
The motivation from the case study is to use the case study and apply it to learn the
implementation of the management solutions for the project cost management and handling the
management of the project scope.
Goal
The main goal of the project is to learn the methods of research and analysis and apply them to
understand the overall methods of management of the concepts of the project cost and scope.
Plan
The plan is to first understand given scenario, define it, collect the relevant data and analyze it to
produce results and recommend solution of problems using the cost & scope management
techniques (Harrison, and Lock, 2017).

2. Problem descriptions
The main challenges with the management of the scope is the management of the complaints
from the end user of the project or the service, wastage of the time on the conflicts related to
project, review of the decision for project and exceeding deadline. If we refer to the case study of
the air conditioning project, the scope management problem was to handle the problem of the
rupturing of the pipes used in the air conditioning, the wastage of the time of the contractor as
the client did not selected the various designs of the air conditioning. When the design was
rejected the design has to be reviewed and this caused the wastage if time and the time frame of
providing the design was exceeded.

3. Research methodology
The research methodology that will be used here is the qualitative research. In this type of
research, the scenario is understood and studies from the point of view of an individual instead of
using the facts and solid data. The people related to the field are questioned for their experiences
and information and then that information is utilized to conclude result.
The method of research that will be used here, will be questionnaire approach where a series of
questions will be asked and then the data collected from the responses of the people will be used
in order to conclude the research (Neuman, 2013).

4. Data collection
The data collection was done using the response gathering from the client and the contractor.
This collected data will be further processed to produce some important results regarding the
case scenario and project management approach (Krosnick, 2018).
Figure 3: Questionnaire designing
The following is the questionnaire for client and contractor:
S.No. Question
1. Are the requirement mentioned by client are fulfilled by
the final proposed design?
2. The implemented design was sufficient according to
scenario?
3. Were the terms of maintenance of the system mentioned
in contract?
4. Was cost of the project justified?
5. Was quality of project justified according to budget?
The response to these questions will be collected and analyzed to produce some insights.

5. Data analysis
The following is the collected data from the data collection method:
Question Response (client) Response (contractor)
Are the requirement mentioned
by client are fulfilled by the
final proposed design?
No Yes
The implemented design was
sufficient according to
scenario?
Yes Yes
Were the terms of maintenance
of the system mentioned in
contract?
Yes No
Was cost of the project
justified?
Yes No
Was quality of project justified
according to budget?
No No
This data was observed and the results of the analysis were produced. The analysis was done by
using responses from both side and using the narrative analysis approach to study and understand
the issue from both side.

6. Findings
The followings are the findings from the research and data analysis:
The client did not provide the right budget.
The scope of the project was not defined in the start of the project.
The project design was done in such manner that it crossed the budget limit.
The review of the designs multiple time caused project execution to take large time.
The maintenance cost was not considered in the budget

7. Recommendations
From the concepts of the management of the project scope and cost, the following can be
suggested for solution:
The project budget should include the maintenance cost.
The client requirements and costing should be matched in start.
There is a need to define scope of project in start of the contract.
For reducing the maintenance cost, the installation products should be of required quality.
For maintain stable budget plan, the client should estimate the cost by himself.
The payment of the project development and maintenance should be discussed in start.
To decrease the overall cost of the project, good analysis of the requirements should be done
(Walker, 2015).

8. Conclusion
According to the plan made for the report and learning, the work was completed and the
important findings and recommendation were obtained. The data was collected using the
questionnaire and the responses were processed to obtain the finding and problems of the case
scenario. The goal of learning the concepts of management of the project scope and cost was
successfully achieved.
