INTRODUCTION
Project management is mainly related to the planning and managing changes within the
organization. The common areas of where it is used are: staffing and management of people,
manufacturing and production, quality management, new business development purchasing etc.
Project management can be considered as an art or science where the different components of the
project has organized in the right manner (Boud, Cohen and Sampson, 2014). It has never taken as a
part of normal business operations. It is the application of skills, knowledge, techniques and tools to
project activities which help in meeting the requirements of the project. The following research has
related to the project management and to determined its importance in the business, ACME
Products PLC organization has taken into consideration. The areas which will be covered under the
following study are project management principles, ways to manage project human resources and
applications of project process and procedures (Heagney, 2012).
TASK 1 UNDERSTAND PROJECT MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES (LO1)
(a) 1.1 Describe the main principles of project management process and linked to the project life
cycle
As per the given case study, it has been identified that during implementation of ACME's
new facility, it has important to considered project management process and project life cycle
(Kshama, 2012). The main principles of project management process and its relationship with the
project life cycle is as follows.
Project structure: During creating the structure for proposed ACME project, the three aspects have
to be considered: project goal, project timeline & order and project milestones (Kshama, 2012).
Under this stage, a goal has prepared as well as the various junctures have developed which defined
the different phase of ACME project in the respect of costs and outcomes.
Definition phase: In this principle, there are many kinds of inputs giving by the stakeholders of
ACME Company. Therefore, by involving the all the stakeholders in every stage of project, the

2013). It has provided the clear picture of starting and sending of the work.
(b) 1.2 Suitable success and failure criteria for the new project
The proposed project has related to implementation of ACME new facility. In this context,
the success and failure criteria has needed to be set by the project manager (Burke, 2013). It has
helped in determine whether the project has developed according to the requirement of the client or
not. Some criteria for measuring the success and failure of project are as follows.
Success and failure criteria
User involvement: If the project team members have not involve the client in decision making
process then it will directly made the impact on the implementation of project. The reason is the
lack of user involvement in the decision making process will not help the project manager to
determine the needs (Caniëls and Bakens, 2012). This will be a failure criteria for the project. But,
if the project manager has taken the suggestions of the users then it will assist in meeting the
objectives of the plan which can be considered as a success criteria.
Resource management: If the project manager has not able to manage the resources such as under
or over utilization of the different resources then it will be impossible to provide the deliverables on
give time (Holzmann, 2013). This can be considered as a failure criteria for the proposed project.
But if the project manager has the capabilities to manage the resources in more effective and
efficient manner then it will be easy to meet the deadlines of the project .

are want from the projects then as per the requirements of the client, project manager will able to

for the proposed project (Gido and Clements, 2014). If the new project has unable to any out of the
these elements then it will be considered as a failure criteria of the project .

Scope: It is combination of fundamental elements and features which are achieving after

As per the give information if, construction of the production machinery will take longer that

activity is not included in the critical path and its slack time is 15 weeks. So, it has a scope of 15
weeks to delay.
But on the other hand, if supply of raw material also affected by 6 weeks as compare to
planned duration that it will affect the total duration of the project (Nishadha, 2012). This activity is
not included in the critical path but still its slack time is 4 weeks only so, if project manager delay
this activity by 6 weeks than it may postpone its predeceasing activities which are included in the
critical path. So, in this situation total duration of this project will increase by 2 weeks and become
68 weeks.

(c) 3.1 Use of Gantt chart and Resource histogram in order to improve the management of ACME

There are two methods by which the improvements in ACME project can be bring. These
techniques are as follows.
Gantt Chart: Gantt chart is a series of horizontal lines which defines the amount of work done in a
given time period with respect to the amount planned for those time frame (Garton and McCulloch,
2012). This tool has become more productive and help the project manager of ACME project to
forecast the short and long term results. The contribution in improving the management of then
proposed project, it can be understood by an example. In the project plan, it has found that in some
activities, the resources are underutilized. It has affected the cost of the project and for other tasks,
the project manager has required to arrange the new resources. To solve this problem, Gantt Chart
will help in identified those activities where the resources are under or over utilized. With the help

(d) 3.2 Analysis of cost and time performance for ACME project
For determining the cost and time performance form ACME project, the different methods
can be used which are as follows.
Cost performance index: It defines the amount of work being accomplished on a project plan for
every unit of cost spent. In the context of ACME project, CPI can be calculated by Earned
value/Actual cost. If the calculated value of CPI is more than 1 that it defines that project is doing
well as compare to against the prepared budget. With the help of this, the cost performance of
project plan can be easily determined (Boud, Cohen and Sampson, 2014).
For example, ACME project has to be completed within 12 months and budget for this is
about to $100000. During the period of 6 month, $ 60000 has been spent. From the review, it has

ï‚· If new changes requests accepted then it will go for development department where the new
project plan will developed and the execution will take place.
ï‚· This is the final step where the existing system will updated as per the new modifications

place as per the new guidance and new methods.
(f) 3.1 Ways to close the project
After completing the whole project according to the project plan, a post project appraisal
will be conducted. Here, the different activities will be taken place such as audit, payment of
remaining bills, post implementation risks assessment, transferring roles and responsibilities and
hand over the project and its related information to ACME Company.
After completing the different tasks in the proposed project as a project manager, the new
facility will be handover to ACME Company. After this, the new production facility will be ready to
use by organization (Gido and Clements, 2014).
But in the case of if the project goals and objectives has not achieved then with he help of
extinction, the project may be closed out. On the other hand, project inclusion is a simple form of
closing out the project (Wright and Adviser-Gottwald, 2013). In this context, the project manager
has hand off the project deliverables to the company by itself.
Once the project manager of ACME project has completed his own tasks, ACME Company
can open the new building and begin the production line of plastic tableware. After this, firm can
integrate its new building with existing plants across the world with the purpose of managing the
production process as well as business operations.
(g) 3.3/3.4 Evaluation of complete project
For evaluating the ACME project after its completion, the different kinds of Key
Performance Indicators can be used. KPI is used for the evaluation of those factors which are
playing essential roles in meeting the success of the project. For proposed project, the KPI's are
outcomes, resource utilization, benefits to the resorts and effectiveness of new facility (Caniëls and
Bakens, 2012). The methods used for measuring the performance of the plan are as follows.
Budgeted cost for work scheduled: The total cost of the project has assessed with the help of this
tool. By comparing the actual budget with the the planned budget on each milestone of project, the
performance of the plan can be determined.
Budgeted cost for work performed: It is used in determining the performance gap which assist in
setting up the failure or success rate of ACME project. By including the calculation of the real cost

of the proposed project, the performance can be easily measured (Killen and et.al., 2012).
CONCLUSION
From the above report, it can be concluded that project manager has required to developed
some success and failure criteria for ACME project to assess the performance. Co-ordination and
control are the most important factors affect the plan in positive and negative way. For proposed
project scheduling, cost and time estimation techniques have affected the entire project plan. By
setting up the different key indicators, the performance of the ACME project has evaluated.
