1BSC PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Introduction:
The project management is considered as the practice of initiating, planning, executing,
controlling and closure of the work so that some pre-defined goals can be achieved within some
specific amount of time while satisfying the specific criteria of success (Kerzner, 2017). In
project management, the project manager plays an important role in the successful completion of
a project. Here, I have also played the role of a project manager. I was assigned for a project
where I have done bathroom renovation for my landlord. In this aspect, I will share my
experiences as a project manager regarding the bathroom renovation project. Here, I will also
describe my learnings from the project.
Reflection on the Bathroom Renovation Project:
Considering the life cycle of the project, there was a total of four stages which are the
project initiation, project planning, project execution and project testing. Specifically, for this
project, these four steps are appropriate as there is no chance of testing in this project. Thus, in
my opinion, the initiation of the project was very well. Here, project management’s initiation
phase has successfully identified the project stakeholders and the funding source for the project.
Also, the success criteria for the project and important deliverable for the project has been
developed. Assumptions related to the project and acceptance criteria for the project has been
identified in this project initiation phase. Thus, I think the overall initiation phase for the project
was actually good.
The subsequent phase regarding the project was the planning phase. Several of important
steps need to be taken in the planning phase of a project (Harris et al., 2018). In this section
project scope has been demonstrated, and a timeline for the project has had. The list of required

resources has been also developed in this context. Also, bathroom rendering has been done in the
planning section. All the important steps have been followed in project planning. So, from an
overall perspective, the planning phase of the project went quite well.
The following phase regarding bathroom renovation project was the execution phase
(Tonchia, 2018), and it was actually completed in two phases which were the development phase
and the installation phase. In the development phase of the project first, the supplier of the raw
material was contacted and following that contractors were contacted. Also, disposal planning
was done in this phase. From my perspective, this phase of the project was average as time
consumption was much higher in this phase while the out was low. Following the development
phase, the installation phase was executed. In this phase first, the electrical appliances were
installed and following that plumbing is done. Also, in this phase, the flooring is completed, the
shower and the bathtub were installed, and the toilet was installed. As per me, this phase of the
project was not efficient. This phase took a long time to complete, which I think delayed the
whole project. So, as per me, there were lots of areas that could have been improved in the
installation phase.
The last phase of the project was the closure phase (Pratt, 2018). Six important tasks were
performed in this phase. Here, invoicing is done, and bills of raw materials and contractors have
been calculated. Following that payment has been done against all the bills that are generated and
project sign off is completed. The whole process was completed quickly, and the minimum time
was consumed in this phase. Thus, as per my consideration, the phase of the bathroom
renovation project was quite efficient and it executed very well.
A project charter is crucial so that a project can be completed successfully (Mark &
Lurie, 2018). The project charter that has been created for the project is quite good and is

following all the standards. The description of the project is completed and the mandatory
stakeholders for bathroom renovation project have been recognized. The main success criteria
for the project has been identified in the project charter and the important deliverables of this
project have been mentioned. Budget for the project and the acceptance criteria for this project
has been included in the project charter. The schedule and the risks related with the project have
been also acknowledged within charter of the project. Thus, as a project manager, the project
charter for this project was appropriate for me.
The initial work breakdown structure developed for the project shown proper flow among
the project and for me, the WBS was proper for this project.
Initial schedule developed for the bathroom renovation project was accurate considering
the project acceptance criteria. The project acceptance criteria defined that project must have
been completed within 30 days where the initial schedule showed that it would take 27 days
which was completely fine. But, the actual project took approximately 48 days to complete the
whole project, which was out of project acceptance criteria. Thus, as per me, the execution of the
project was completely wrong as it failed to meet the targeted deadline.
The budget of any project is a crucial factor (Adafin, Rotimi & Wilkinson, 2016), and the
initial budget calculated for the project was under the total allocated budget. Though in the
planning everything was fine, the project budget was increased by more than triple of the initial
budget. One of the main reason behind the increased budget was deadline miss of the project. As
the budget got increased by a large amount, it failed to satisfy the project acceptance criteria.
Thus, this is again one criterion in which this project is completely failed.

The main risks linked with the project that has been acknowledged in this context and all
the risks that have been identified can occur in the project. Poor planning and designed was one
of the important risks for the project with high impact and this risk has actually occurred in the
project. Due to this schedule got delayed and cost overrun happened. Both the risks of cost
overrun and schedule delays were mentioned on the project risk previously. Thus, as per my
observations, the risks identified for the project was quite appropriate in this case. So, I can say
that the risk identification has been made properly for the bathroom renovation project.
Conclusion:
Considering the discussion in the above section, I can conclude that the bathroom
renovation project was a complete failure as it failed to satisfy the project acceptance criteria. For
this project, there were several steps that have been completed with great accuracy but the
project failed to deliver in two important criteria which were the project deadline and the project
budget. Though there were several good steps taken in the project, still this project is counted as
a complete failure as violated the acceptance criteria of the project. It means that the client can
refuse to accept the project. So, I also consider this project in the list of failures.
