Significant Concepts, Methods, Terms and Other Components
The chosen chapter in the book talks about various concepts and methods related to
project management that can be applied in different streams and sectors like construction,
healthcare, creative services and others. In these sectors, project management concepts, tools and
techniques can be utilised to solve various problems or issues within the chosen sector (Watt,
2019). Project management is a huge field of study that includes multiple tools and techniques,
one or more of which are applied to the different sectors. Moreover, the authors of the book also
talk about how project management skills can be applied in a wide range of career paths some of
which are discussed as follows.
Business Owners: Business owners like restaurant managers or retail store managers need
to use significant project management skills like cost estimation, return on investment
calculation, cost benefit analysis and others in order to run the entire business. Furthermore, the
business owners also need to have stakeholder management skills in order to manage all the
stakeholders associated with the company / business.
Outsourcing Services: Outsourcing services are actually project management activities on
a much broader scale. When services are outsourced to an external organisation or company,
various aspects of the service including scope, time, budget and other aspects need to be
managed but the outsourced organisation (Meredith, Mantel Jr & Shafer, 2017). The organisation
presents various proposals to the parent organisation, one of which is chosen and effectively
managed in the form of project management.

Healthcare: Healthcare professionals and managers like nurses need project management
skills and knowledge at various parts of their duties. This includes risk management skill, which
is one of the most important components of project management. A healthcare professional
needs to be aware of and evaluate various risks that exist within their duties in serving patients in
hospitals.
Software Developer: Software developers also need various project management skills in
order to conduct their specific duties. The most important domain within project management
that is useful for software developers is the project management methodology (Kerzner, 2017).
Project management methodologies include various types like waterfall, scrum, agile and others
that are also applicable for software development. Rather, software development process can be
treated as a project and then suitable project management methodology like prototyping or agile
can be utilised.
These are some of the career professions where project management skills are very much
important for the professional to complete his work requirements. In addition to the various
project management sub domains like risk management, time management, scope management
and others, there are also certain tools and techniques that are utilised by the project managers
and other professionals (Marchewka, 2016). These tools and techniques include Gantt chart,
work breakdown structure, Critical Path Management (CPM), Activity on Node (AON) and
others. Each of these tools and techniques have its own functions and importance and must be
learned by the project managers but also by various professions in the fields discussed above and
others.
