3.2 Case Study 2- Sydney Opera House
3.2.1 Introduction
Case Study of Sydney Opera House
The case study of the Sydney Opera House is describing the scenario of construction of this
project. According to this case study, Government of New South Wales was conducted the new
building of the Sydney Opera House in 1957. The architecture competition was won by the Jorn
Utzon for this Sydney Opera House. The design of the building is prepared by the Jorn Utzon
and construction of the building was started in 1959. The construction of the Sydney Opera
House was the disastrous construction of the history not only from whole management of this
project but also the cost management plan of this project. The cost management of this project
was failed due to the improper management of the project. Sydney Opera House project is
completed in the three phases. All three phase was completed by three different team’s members.
When the Jorn Utzon has completed the first phase and left this project’s work. He did not leave
any paperwork of the project’s design. Due to this, next two stage’s conduction was suffered and
new engineers team was created the new design on the basis of the present construction model.
This whole process was enhanced the total construction cost of the Sydney Opera House. Due to
this, the cost of the project was increased from $7 million to $102 million. This project also
reduced the quality of the project.
Motivation
The main motivation of this report is providing the most important information on scope and cost
management of any project and project must be completed at the time. This management must be
performed at the initial development phase or stage of the project. Project cost management is a
way which is providing the detail information to manage the cost of the project in an effective
manner. It will provide the best solution for this project’s problems which can be easily
implemented and applied in this Sydney Opera House project. The scope management of a
project has defined the scope of this project proper which can be considered at the time of
development of the Sydney Opera House’s project. These both managements can define the
scope and cost of the Sydney Opera House’s project in the proper manner.
So, by using the Sydney Opera House’s case study, the importance of cost management and
scope management will explain. Therefore, the project can be completed in the specified budget
and given time with the good quality (Anonymous, 2010).

Goal
The goal of this report is to provide the numbers of methods and information which are
describing that how will project’s cost to manage and how will project’s scope manage. It will
describe the complete management process for the project in respect to the cost and scope
(Simplilearn, 2013).
Plan
The plan is creating for understanding the goal or objective of the project which is discussed and
mentioned in this report. So, first understand the definition of cost management and scope
management of the project. Then, the best method or techniques will implement for the given
case study and find out the best approach for the Sydney Opera House project which is discussed
here (Bridges, 2018).

3.2.2 Problem Description
This part of the project report is defining the problem area which was faced by the Sydney Opera
House at the time of construction. The main problem of Sydney Opera House’s construction
project is that cost management and scope management at the time of development of the
project. Here, some challenges or issues are providing for the cost management and scope
management which are given below:
The main issue or challenges for managing the for the cost management and scope
management is the quality of the project and keeping the most important information
such designing paper of the project, agreement papers and other type information of the
project.
Another issue or challenges is that changing the needs of clients when the construction of
the project was started and design and plan were modified on the basis of new
requirements of clients.
Sometimes budget of the project will not compatible for completion of project due to, the
changing in design of the project when the construction of the project has started and not
keeping the important designing paper of the project just like as the Sydney Opera House
project which was affected the quality of project and completion of project on the time.
These problems are indirectly enhancing the cost of the project.

3.2.3 Research Methodology and Data Collection
Research Methodology
To research for managing the scope and cost of project, the case study of that project must be
referred or used and proper communication and interview method can be also used to get the
details information of problems area of project and perfect solutions can find on the time which
can be helped in the cost management and scope management of the Sydney Opera House
project (i.unisa, 2019).
Figure 3: Research Methodology
For the cost management and scope management, the project contractor will be the right one for
researching the needs of the project and for the purpose, the interview method can be used and
asked numbers of questions from the project contractor and taken the response from the project
contractor. This response can be used for removing the problems of Sydney Opera House
construction project and the proper management can be created with the help of this response.

Here, some interview questions are providing along the responses which could be asked by the
project contractor for managing the cost and scope of the project which is given below:
# Interview’s Questions Response
1. What was the key’s challenge or issues
in the designing of the Sydney Opera
House project’s model?
Changing in the design of the project when
construction of the project was started.
Not keeping all information of project’s design
in the proper manner.
2. What was the main area of the project
which can be resolved?
The specification, scope and cost review of the
plan.
3. How will the cost of the project
reduce?
Create the proper plan from the initial stage of
the project.
4. What types of methods can use for
managing the construction of the
Sydney Opera House project?
Create the proper designing plan for the project
and verify the designing plan from the clients.
Manage the quality of the project in a specific
manner.

Data Collection
The numbers of data collection methods can be used to collect the data information about the
Sydney Opera House project and this collected information are analyzing. So collection and
analyzing of data information is called as data collection. So, here, numbers of methods are given
which can be used for collecting the data information which is given below:
Figure 4: Data Collection
Documents: In this method, the related data information of project case study can be used and
created the proper documents for the Sydney Opera House project.
Observation: The observation may make directly to measure processing of project, market
values, and environmental variables, requirements of the project and other things of the project
on the basis of research works.
Interview: In this method, the project’s related questions are created and asked to responsible
who is handling the management and development of the Sydney Opera House project.

Questionnaire: This method can be utilized for collecting regular information on the
management and development of the Sydney Opera House project. The data information is
collected from the questionnaire include fishing practices, demographics, and other types of
information (Research-Methodology, 2019).
Document Page
3.2.4 Data Analysing
After collecting the data information from the interview process and the response was received
from the project contractor. In this process, the collected information or response can manipulate
in the numbers of ways such as pivot tables, filter and short the data information by different
variables. Then calculate the maximum, standard and minimum deviation of the collected data
information (Dillard, 2019).
Figure 5: Data Analyzing
After the manipulating the data information, the needs of the project can find such as create the
proper designing plan for the project and verify the designing plan to the clients, manage the
quality of the project in a specific manner, create the proper plan from the initial stage of Sydney
Opera House project and another type of information (Anon, 2008).
