Introduction
When selecting a new project the selection process entails a number of processes such
as selecting the inputs, tools and techniques to be used and the project outputs. Therefore,
selection of a new project involves three key requirements inputs, tools and techniques and
outputs. To begin with the project inputs include project charter, stakeholder management
plan, requirements management plan and scope management plan and lastly but not least
stakeholder register (Heagney, 2016). The tools and techniques used in selection a new
project include Gantt chart, PERT chart, Work Breakdown Structure, Product Breakdown
structure, and logic network. On the other hand, the outputs involves documentation of the
project requirements and requirements traceability matrix.
Project Inputs
The inputs to be included in a new project include:
Project charter: It is a form and usually a brief document used to describe the project in
addition to its entirety. Therefore, the project scope comprises the project objectives, the way
in which these objectives will be undertaken and the stakeholders of the project (Kaiser, El
Arbi, & Ahlemann, 2015). Indeed, project charter is an essential component when it comes to
planning out a new project since it is utilised throughout the project lifecycle.
Stakeholder management plan: It is a formal document which outlines the manner in which
stakeholders will be involved in the project. Accordingly this plan helps to ensure that there is
effective communication among stakeholders.
Requirements management plan: requirements management is the process of analysing,
documenting, tracking, agreeing and prioritising on a project’s requirements which is latter
on controlled and communicated to the stakeholders (Larson, Gray, Danlin, Honig, &

Bacarini, 2014). Requirements management is a consistent process that take place throughout
the project lifecycle. The purpose of requirements management plan is to make sure that

project entails all the relevant tasks needed to accomplish the project. Therefore, scope
management plan designates the manner in which the project scope is defined, developed and
verified (Turner, 2016). Therefore, this plan clearly describes the person tasked with the
responsibility of managing the project’s scope and also act as a directive for managing as
well as controlling the scope.
Stakeholder register: This is a project management document used to identify, classify and
assess the project stakeholders. Similarly, the stakeholder register is used to give information
on how to plan a range of practices regarding the manner in which to involve the project
stakeholders (Gido, Clements, & Clements, 2014). Accordingly, the stakeholder register is a
key document utilised as an input for creating different project processes.
Tools and Techniques used in Selection a New Project
Gantt chart: It is a common project management bar chart used to track the project tasks over
time (Martinelli, & Milosevic, 2016). Indeed, Gantt chart is a significant tolls for scheduling
and planning in project management in the senses that it aids project managers in evaluating
the time to be taken by the project, determining the necessary resources required and how to
plan the order through which different project task are to be accomplished.
Program evaluation Review Technique (PERT): It is a project management element used for
organising, scheduling as well as organising different tasks within a project. Certainly, PERT
chart plays a major role in predicting the completion period of the project by considering
various uncertainties involved within a project.

Logic network: It is a virtual representation of a network which is used to illustrate a
sequence of activities within a project over a specified period. Consequently, the logic
network is used to exemplify the type of activities that precedes another activity. Therefore,
the logic network is used to determine the milestones as well as the critical path (Kerzner,
2018). Accordingly, the logic network aid the project manager to understand the
dependencies within different tasks.
Work breakdown structure (WBS): It is an essential project deliverable that structures
different project tasks into manageable divisions. The WBS has a number of benefits such as
it increases productivity, provide more detailed steps and allow for transparency and
accountability (Larson, & Gray, 2015). The WBS enable greater productivity by effectively
identifying the skills sets needed to accomplish a specific task and determine the right
number of workforce required to complete a certain task.
Product breakdown structure (PBS): This is an instrument used for analysing, communicating
and documenting project deliverables.
Project output
The project outputs include documentation of the project requirements and
requirements traceability matrix. Requirements documentation: A project cannot be
implemented minus the project meeting certain requirements. In project management
requirements documentation defines the manner in which each and every requirement realise
the business requirements of the project (Kerzner, & Kerzner, 2017). Therefore, these
requirements ought to be traceable, measurable, complete and consistent and acceptable to
the stakeholders. Lastly the requirements traceability matrix is a document that highlight all
the proposed requirements by the client at the end of the project lifecycle (Dionisio, 2017).
