2SYSTEM DESIGN IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Introduction:
In project management, system design is defined as the process of defining the
architecture, interfaces, modules and data for a system in order to satisfy the specified
requirements of a project. System design is defined as the application of theory of systems so as
to develop products. Designing or analyzing systems within project is an important step as it
helps in providing solutions to the system for various tasks that are carried out within a project
and its management cycle (Ramazani and Jergeas 2015). With the help of these various tasks that
are involved within the management of projects the designing of the systems can be improved
further with the less probability of occurrence of errors. System designing forms the backbone
for any project as it helps in grasping knowledge in a better way. The concept of system
designing consists of several knowledge areas including architectural designs, logical designs,
physical designs that are utilized within project so as to attain the best outcome with the required
deliverables of the project. This report is prepared so as to reflect on the idea of the four chosen
topic based on the course of system designing in project while pointing out the suitable example
that are used within project management so as to describe the topics.
Discussion:
Complexity of Knowing a System:
Systems are made of different sets of interacting parts where the different parts of the
system gets effected due to the other parts as a result of interaction. The course based on the
“Complexity of Knowing a System” consisted of different parts of the system that are included
within the course material. The definition of a system as explained within this course includes

assembling of components that are connected together in an organized manner (Duffield and
Whitty 2015). The components that are included within the course topic are affected by the
behavior of the system and are identified with a particular interest. The course described the
detailed procedure of using a system to think for its designing while managing the systems. It
includes avoiding or mitigating the failure while improving the performance of the machines.
Benefit on learning the course:
Learning the course helped me in increasing the capability of to deal with complex
situations within the field of project management. The learning from the course enabled us to
apply its knowledge in the application on reducing corruption in trade. Corruption is one of the
constant problem that is prevalent within trade and is a part of every project management.
Prevalence of corruption within project management leads to the failure of different types of
projects and is a constant concern that can be mitigated while using the Kurtz and Snowden’s
Cynefin framework.
Kurtz and Snowden’s Cynefin framework:
The Kurtz and Snowden’s Cynefin framework as described in the course related to
“Complexity of Knowing a System” is identified as the best suitable method or framework that
can be adapted by effective leaders so as to understand the main problems behind the occurrence
of corruption in trade and hence helping in to take actions based on the situation while making
better decisions and approaches to change the circumstances within project management. The
framework of Kurtz and Snowden’s Cynefin is based on the concept of managing knowledge
while aligning with the organizational strategy of project management (Shalbafan, Leigh Pollack
and Sankaran 2015). The Kurtz and Snowden’s Cynefin framework is a type of problem solving

tool that helps in putting solutions within five domains and are defined by the cause and effect
relationship in dealing with problem related to corruption in trade. The framework can be used at
different levels while mitigating the issues related to corruption in trade depending on the
purpose and context of the project. It helped in gaining new insights so as to move the corrupted
situation from one domain to the other while considering the formal way of approach to manage
the corrupted situation in trade through formal and informal communities and differentiating the
strategies related to retention of knowledge based on the context of exchanging multiple
knowledge.
System Engineering:
The next topic area that is discussed within the course is based on System Engineering.
There exists a unique relation between system engineering and project management concept.
Although there is no such direct relation between system engineering concept the system
engineers and the project managers encompasses the managerial and technical leadership within
a project management concept (Kerzner 2017). The scope of system engineering and project
management overlaps over each other based on the planning of critical activities, managing the
efforts, reducing the risks and successfully delivering the project to the customers. Like project
management concept, the working of system engineering includes planning of the project,
monitoring, delivering the technical aspects and confronting the risks that are associated with
each of the activity of the overall project.
Benefit on learning the course:
On learning about the course related to system engineering it helped us to understand the
systems and their related processes of engineering. It also helped in constructing the
requirements that are needed for system engineering while analyzing the performances related to

the function of system analysis and developing the system architecture for the given specified
project.
Application of System engineering in solving problem in project management:
Unlike traditional approach towards problem solving system engineering method
provides a holistic way of approach that helps in solving problems present within an undesirable
situation within project management. Application of system engineering acts as a problem solver
in different project management while helping us to understand the situation and creating vision
for the particular project management. While implementing the process of system engineering
within project management helps in analyzing the systems and processes within a project with
suitable formulation and viable alternatives. The process of system engineering that helped me in
understanding complex problems in project management included engagement with the
stakeholders, understanding the project environment, solving the problem and finally delivering
the appropriate solution for the specified project. From this course we have learnt that
application of system engineering approach within project helps in solving problems that may
become crucial while working on the project and hence regarded as complex projects. In this
respect the suitable framework or approach that helps in solving problem in the project
management field includes comprehensive system framework or the SID3 approach involving
steps like developing, defining and delivering the solution to the project with the help of holistic
approach. This type of project approach can be marked in the example of implementing digital
railway technology.

Systematic Risk:
Project risk is defined to be occurrence of uncertain events within project management
leading to affect the entire objectives of the project. The course based on the topic area
“Systematic Risk” included recognition of risks associated with projects while analyzing the
risks with suitable research methods (Loosemore and Cheung 2015).
Benefit on learning the course:
The course also included identifying, managing and communicating the results of project
risks while making use of the ISO 31000 for systems and risks related to project. The course
included identifying the core types of risks that are related with project using various types of
qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methods. The different course components that are
provided in the course helped me in understanding the risk simulation techniques or the
challenges that are linked with complex projects. The course included demonstrating continuous
learning in association with the personal development. All types of ethical, social and cultural
issues are identified within the project that helped us in identifying the project risks associated
with specific project management fields.
Application in global Stock Market:
Global stock market risks can be broadly classified into two types of risks one is the
systematics risk and the other is the unsystematic risk. The systematic risks that are caused
within global stock market includes various global factors including rising of oil prices or
movements in the currency or changes in the rate of interest. The systematic risks that are
associated with the global stock market are non-diversifiable (Lasserre 2017). The course on
systematic risk can be applied to the field of global stock market and can be determined while

calculating the total risk associated with different market factors including the global factors in
the stock market. All types of systems that comprises of the national stock market are
independently regulated and can bring about systematic risks leading to significant reduction in
the stock prices. The course related to the topic area based on Systematic Risk can be
successfully applied to the field of financial systems that helped me in identifying the systematic
risks related to the field and its management.
Tiny Initiating Events:
The course based on the topic “Initiating Tiny Events” includes developing of competent
and complex environment so as to manage the investigation, planning and delivery of complex
projects. The course topic includes initiating tiny events based on examining the latest research
in complex project management field while applying lessons that are learned alomg with best
practices leading to development of potential solutions based on the contemporary global
challenges.
Benefit on learning the course:
While undertaking the course related to initiating tiny events, we got a clear
understanding of undertaking unique challenges that are present within large and complex
projects. The initiation of tiny events within project management includes detailed planning
process including the execution of the work. The course helped us to know about the different
methods while focusing on the essential steps that can be taken during initiating tiny events in
project management.
Possibility of US is raising interest rates by a tiny amount as a result of economic
improvement:

8SYSTEM DESIGN IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT
The course related to the application of initiating tiny events in project management can
be applied in the case of US rise in the rate of interest by tiny amounts as a result of economic
improvement. The change in the interest rate have both positive and negative impact on the US
market and have direct impact on the economy of the country. The entire project included taking
up of or initiating tiny steps such as fixing the income amounts including the savings account,
funds related to money market. The banks took initiating steps like providing their customers
with short term loans that are higher than the primary rates. The course also helped us to
understand the fact that why the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau initiated steps to protect
the consumers while regulating credit cards, debit cards and prepaid cards. As all these tiny steps
are taken within the project of increasing the rate of interest, it raised the competitive advantages
while allowing the US fed funds to better invest in the future. It also helped in lowering the rate
of interest to other bods. As the bonds compete with the investors’ money, hence the bonds also
got affected due to the stock market.
Conclusion:
Project management is an important step towards managing projects. Each and every
project tends to be complex of their own kind and needs their unique method for planning,
organizing and monitoring the processes. Undertaking courses in project management helped me
in clearly defining the plan of the project before beginning it. It also helped me in gaining idea
based on establishing scheduled plan and processes. Undertaking the different topic areas that are
included within the project management course helped me in gaining clear idea about the
different knowledge areas that are present while helping me to deal with the complex problems
of the system. The topic based on system engineering helped me to gain idea on the various

system engineering processes that can be utilized within the project management fields while
mitigating all the system risk that have the possibility to take place. The course also c9nsisted of
the system risk area that enabled me to determine the system risk and to apply them in the field
of global stock market so as to identify the global rusks that are present within the market with
respect to stock market position. Overall the entire course on project management helped me to
understand each and every topic based on the knowledge areas while allowing me to apply them
to real world situations and resolving the problems related to it. As a whole, the course based on
system for design in project management helped in encompassing the detailed processes,
business decisions and strategies while enabling me to innovate and create effective design of
products and services based on the project requirements
