The role of a project leader:
According to the content provided, a leader is someone who rules, provides guidance and
inspiration to others. Therefore, the main responsibility of a leader is to provide direction to
others and helps them achieve their personal as well as team goals. Leaders provide context
for others to achieve goals and therefore, controls behaviours of others.
In project, it is required to identify and achieve project goals and someone is provided the
authority to set direction for achieving goals and also determine if the goal is achieved or not.
Along with this, the team leader is required to influence others for committing their
knowledge and they are also required to ensure that the team members are dedicated to
provide their effort for achieving the project goal.
It is easy for me to interpret these aspects of a project leadership because I was once involved
in a project, though not as a leader but as a team member. We had a group of 5 people and
developing our first project of designing a website for a client. As this was our first project,
we had very little knowledge regarding project management and therefore achieving the
project purpose and project goal was not that easy for the team. Due to some delay in code
design, the project was delayed, however, while the project was provided to our team, it was
described the client will not extend the timeline for the project and project budget as well.
Therefore, in order to deliver the project, we required to skip the testing process. However,
we knew that if the testing is not done, then it might affect the security of the website due to
security vulnerabilities and to identify these vulnerabilities, we had to execute the testing
process.
Our team leader took the responsibility and decided to arrange a meeting with the client.
After the importance of testing was described to the client along with reason for delay in the
project, the client approved extension of time and asked to deliver the website while ensuring

that the website not only provides the required features but also ensure that the website is
secured as well. The testing was completed and the website was delivered to the client as
well.
While, we were trying to compromise with the project quality to deliver the project within the
time, the team leader not only provided direction and guided the team, but also took the
responsibility to ensure that the project goal of delivering a secure website integrating all of
the required features is achieved as well.

Influence others:
This is an important quality of any leader. In order to lead others it is important to influence
others as well. If someone is not capable of influencing others with their ideas, then people
don’t see that person as their leader because a leader is someone who is followed by others
for their ideas and capability for which ensuring influence among the followers is important.
This is one skill which I think I need to acquire to ensure effective leadership.
Provide motivation:
People look for leaders for motivation. However, motivating others is not an easy thing to do
and it requires proper skills as well. Some of the skills such as identifying requirements of the
people, analysing their issues, providing ideas for resolving those issues while they are not
capable of doing it properly are required in this context and I would like to acquire these
skills as well.
Providing context for team members to contribute in knowledge sharing:

It is an important quality of a leader to engage team members and lead the team effectively
and efficiently as well. However, to ensure that it is required to allow each and every team
members to share their knowledge which will motivate them and they will provide effort in
ensuring that the team work is successful as well. However, engaging team members and
provide context for knowledge sharing is a complex thing to execute and therefore, I would
like to acquire this important skill for ensuing quality leadership as well.
Interacting with team members personally:
When a leader interact with people, it is important to ensure that the interaction is not only
formal and administrative, it should interaction at personal level as well. When a leader
interact with people at personal level, they are much more motivated and consider the leader
someone who belongs to them, not only to the officials. This an important aspect of effective
leadership which not only manages people, but inspire and motivate them as well for which
personal interaction is significantly important. In order to ensure effective leadership, I would
like to acquire this skill as well.

Providing future focus:
In projects, there might be various issues that might not be identified while project is being
initiated and therefore providing future focus is important to ensure success in the project.
This is done by the leader and therefore, it is an important skill to lead the project.

In order to execute projects, sometime significant organizational change is required.
However, to integrate this change with the organizational culture is a complex task and
project leader should lead this change.
Setting directions:
Sometime, in projects there are various issues for which proper direction is required to ensure
that the execution of project is not affected and this is done by the project leader.
Inspiring others:
Inspiring people in the project is an important skill to lead a project. When people are not
inspired and motivated, they do not provide effort in project execution. Therefore, anyone
who want to lead a project requires this skill.
Skills for managing:
Converting ideas into actions that are planned in the project:
One of the main aspects of managing a project is to convert ideas of project into action for
completing that project. It is an important skill of a manager to provide context to execute
project plan and its activities required to complete the project.
Establishing systems or processes:
Although it is required to execute project activities to complete a project, it requires effective
systems or processes for execution of project activities. It is responsibility of the project
manager to design effective systems or processes according to the project requirements and
therefore the project manager require this skill.
Provide decisions and design reports for the project:

Analyse requirements in the project and provide effective decision for project execution is
important for completion of project. Project manager need to take decision in various
contexts for example issues with project stakeholders, managing delay in the project,
assigning resources in the project, managing risks in the project and other important activities
as well. Therefore, project managers should ensure effective decision making skills for
completing project.
Reflection on skills in providing clear message, receiving and providing feedback,
resolving conflicts or influencing significant others:
When I communicate with others, I try to ensure that I am not communicating too fast for
allowing others in interpreting message and I think I am good enough in providing may
message clearly. However, I need to improve in providing feedback, though I am quite good
at receiving feedback and analyse it as well. However, when I have conflict with others
regarding some issues, I am not good enough in managing this properly and therefore, I need
to improve in this aspect as well.
