Summary and Purpose of Assessment
This assessment is to ensure you can deal with different and difficult ethical interpreting situations
that you will likely to face in real life, and to ensure that you can make right decisions taking all the
aspects available to you into account.
There are two (2) parts to this assessment:
Part 1 – Scenario Analysis
Part 2 – Activity Report
Assessment Instructions
Part 1
Read the scenarios provided in the Part 1 template and answer the questions involving professional
ethical issues. You are required to reflect on your interpreting practice and apply your knowledge
of relevant ethical codes and standards. The template is provided below, and you are to submit
your completed work to CANVAS. (Appendix 1)
Part 2
The following activities are listed in your template for Part 2:
Activity 1 – Research Code of Ethics
Activity 2 – Self contemplation
Activity 3 – Interview two (2) professional practising interpreters
Activity 4 – Professional Development
Conduct and complete the activities listed in template for Part 2 and provide a response to all the

1. This assessment is to be completed individually, outside class time.
2. You must answer all questions and is to be submitted on Canvas before the submission date
specified.
3. Your assessor will assess your submitted report. They will contact you if any information is
missing and you will have 24 hours to provide the missing documentation for assessment.
4. This is an open ‘book’ assessment. You can access websites and other resources for
information, legislation etc. to respond to the questions.
5. All submissions must meet the criteria to the standard described in the marking guide in
Section B to be deemed satisfactory in this assessment
6. You must answer all questions correctly to be deemed satisfactory in this assessment
7. You will be assessed as satisfactory or not satisfactory
8. Please make arrangements with your coordinator at least one week prior to the assessment
due date if you feel you require adjustment to the assessment of any part of this task.
9. Where an extension of greater than seven days is needed, you must apply for special
consideration.
10. If you have an equitable assessment arrangement which provides for negotiation of
submission dates, extensions of more than seven days may be considered.
11. If you don’t meet the criteria for the task, you will be provided with one opportunity to
resubmit the report.
12. You can appeal the assessment decision according to the RMIT Assessment Processes.

This is a Centrelink interview between a pensioner and a Centrelink officer assisted by an
interpreter. The pensioner says “I have a friend who is also a pensioner. He receives a
telephone allowance and a pharmaceutical allowance. I haven’t received these
allowances for many years.” The Centrelink officer says “Everyone has different
circumstances. You probably were not entitled to receive anything other than rent
assistance.”
The interpreter thinks that this is not accurate information and before interpreting what
the Centrelink officer said, he/she quickly says to the pensioner “You are entitled to
receive these allowances. If you lodge a complaint, they can start paying you and
backdate for 12 months.”

Activity 3 - Scenario
An interpreter is assisting a consultation between a GP and an elderly female LOTE
speaking patient. The LOTE speaking patient has been seeing the same GP a few times
before for her chronic back pain due to an old injury. The GP talks about possible
treatment methods including physiotherapy and a surgery. The interpreter (female)
used to be a nurse in the LOTE country before migrating to Australia many years ago. She
is not a registered nurse in Australia. While the GP is looking at the patient’s file on the
computer screen, the interpreter speaks to the LOTE patient,
‘I’ve been here for a long time and I hear that most people don't find physiotherapy
helpful for back pain. It doesn’t heal back pain quickly. Surgery seems to be the best and
quickest method. I have seen many cases like yours. I am a nurse as well, so you can
trust me. If you want to go for the surgery option, I can introduce you to a good surgeon.
He is actually my cousin and works at XYZ Hospital. I can give you his contact details after
this assignment finishes. Tell him that you spoke with me as it always works.’
After the GP consultation is finished, the interpreter gives her cousin’s contact details to
the LOTE patient. Later in the day, the interpreter called her cousin to explain about the
LOTE patient and her condition and told the cousin to expect a call from the patient.
