It examines how self-conception is affected by societal racism, using the disparity in school retention rates between white and black American children as a key indicator. The essay discusses the causes of increased dropout rates, highlighting the role of environmental anxiety and its influence on students' self-perception and psychological well-being. It further analyzes how stereotype threat affects various student groups, leading to lower self-esteem and underestimation of abilities among African American students compared to their white counterparts. Through a scenario involving SAT test scores, the essay demonstrates how racial discrimination and stereotyping negatively impact performance, attributing it to self-doubt and a sense of self-handicap rather than inherent intellectual differences. The findings underscore the significant effects of racial biases on overall societal outcomes.
