AI Summary
This assignment is a reaction paper focusing on a journal article that investigates the relationship between vulnerable narcissism and neuroticism. The study, utilizing multiple samples and various psychological tests, hypothesizes and confirms a positive correlation between neuroticism and vulnerable narcissism, while also finding a negative correlation with agreeableness. The paper discusses the study's methodology, including the use of dominance analyses and various assessment tools, and highlights the significance of neuroticism as a primary factor in vulnerable narcissism. The analysis also points out potential limitations, such as the study's geographical focus on the United States and suggests the need for cross-cultural research to validate the findings. The author concludes that the study successfully demonstrates the connection between these personality traits, contributing to a better understanding of narcissistic vulnerability. Miller, J. D., Lynam, D. R., Vize, C., Crowe, M., Sleep, C., Maples-Keller, J. L., . . .
Campbell, W. K. (2017). Vulnerable Narcissism Is (Mostly) a Disorder of
Neuroticism. Journal of Personality 86:2, 186-199.
Introduction
The paper seeks to understand the extent to which the basic personality traits like
Neuroticism and can be relevant to narcissistic grandiosity. (Miller, et al., 2017) In order
to achieve this objective, the study took four samples from three clusters viz: online
community, undergraduate students, patients under clinical treatments (these patients had
to be educated to a minimum of 8th grade, have basic computer proficiency and had to be
non-symptomatic of psychosis.) This study explains the relevance of personality traits
that are and the Five Factor Model taught in class as well as provides a good example on
how basic psychology research is conducted.
Hypothesis and Testing
The study hypothesized that neuroticism is highly correlated to vulnerable narcissism
while low agreeableness is correlated to vulnerable to narcissism i.e there is negative
correlation between the two. The authors conducted dominance analyses on four samples,
two of these samples were paid and unpaid undergraduates, one sample was made up of
random paid participants and the fourth sample contained adult participants who were
currently under psychological treatment but showed symptom control. Over 1800
participants were tested and included participants from various geographical regions and
age groups (among adults). Thus, measures were taken to eliminate bias, yet the study
seems to be dominated by Caucasian ethnicity.
A wide variety of tests and inventories available were used to conduct this research.
These tests included structured and unstructured interviews, questionnaires, self testing
and informant testing, ratings test, thin slicing etc. The study, also, provides clear

quantitative results which make it easy to rank the association if basic variables with
vulnerable narcissism
Conclusion
The paper is rich and complex due to the richness of the samples as well as the wide array
of tests conducted. It is successful in proving a relationship that makes sense intuitively.
It is possible to draw both ordinal and cardinal relationships from the conclusion of this
study. The study concluded that neuroticism and vulnerable narcissism are positively
related while agreeableness is negatively correlated to vulnerable narcissism. After
eliminating the share of neuroticism in vulnerable, a partialed variable study was also
conducted to find that the low agreeable was indeed a dominating factor that was a
significant composite trait of vulnerable narcissism. Additionally, the study also tested
interpersonal relationships of these variables with several other variables. For example,
the study concluded that both vulnerable narcissism and neuroticism were linked to
childhood abuse and poor parenting. However, the study seems to be very digressing.
There are so many panels and variables being tested by the study that the key points are
lost in the cacophony. This is possible the only drawback of an otherwise very rich
research. The study is geographically limited to United States of America. People from
different countries, different cultures could have different results for the same array of
tests. Hence, a cross cultural sample may help the study improve. The true success of this
study will be established if the results remain unchanged with a wider, cross cultural
sample.
