society, family, school etc. due to this abuse it has become difficult for them to cope with. They
are living in depression and stress. Alongside, there is a great negative impact of psychological
abuse on women mental health. It is found that there are various types of abuse which is faced by
them such as sexual, domestic violence, physical abuse, etc. (Adams, and Beeble, 2019) It
affect on their social as well as personal life. Usually, women are victim of these abuse because
in society they are considered as powerless. However, it is necessary to identify that whether

LITERATURE REVIEW
According to Birtel, Wood, L. and Kempa, 2017, in society women face various types of
abuse which affect on their mental and physical health. There are various types of abuse which is
faced by women such as domestic violence, sexual, physical etc. but among them it is found that
domestic violence is most common form of abuse faced by them. Generally, women living in
villages and backward area face this abuse. this is because of several factors such as lack of
money, social life, surrounding environment etc. It has been observed that 1 out of every 3
women have faced abused in their life. they are mentally torched and harassed by family
members, co workers etc.
The young women are more prone to abuse as they have to maintain work life balance. so, if
they are not able to do so then in family and society they are being abused. Moreover, at work
place as well women are abused sexually. the managers and colleagues abuse them. However, it
is essential to discover abuse so that it can be prevented. in order to do so there must be proper
communication. It will help in sharing personal problems and expressing feelings. in this way
views and opinions are shared. ( said that well being of person is related to mental health. so, if
mental health is affected it automatically impact on physical health as well. so, it is necessary to
have proper mental state in order to improve and maintain well being.

Impact of psychological abuse on women and their well being
As said by Blakemore, Herbert, and Parkinson, 2017, there are several consequences of
psychological abuse on women. the impact of abuse differs from women to women. It also
depends on their background, society, mental health state, etc. Besides that, impact differs on
basis of type of abuse which is being faced by women. It has been analysed that there is adverse
affect on women and their well being due to abuse. Abused women often experience conflicting
emotions such as fear, anger, shame, resentment, sadness and powerlessness. They are not weak,
submissive victims – quite the opposite, they are courageous and resourceful. It takes huge
strength to live with an abusive partner. also, domestic violence as a traumatic experience with
various mental disturbances in all women of domestic violence. there is high neuroticism,
moderate to severe depression, higher intensity of psychological symptoms of somatization,
anxiety, sensitivity, and paranoid tendencies, with moderate score on global severity index of
symptoms among women.
Suicide attempt – It is stated that many women think of doing suicide due to abuse which they
face. this is a major problem in women when they face physical abuse or domestic violence.
Basically, it happens in low and middle class income women who face abuse. There is change in
mental state as they start feeling depressed and sad. However, there are various causes of suicide
which is observed in it such as mental health problems, disorder, and many others.
Psychological distress – this is another major impact of psychological abuse on women. It is
defined as state of emotional suffering that may occur due to various combination of symptoms
that range from depression to anxiety and behaviour problem. however, in psychological distress
there is change in emotion due to which daily activities is highly impacted of women. they are
not able to concentrate on particular things (Heise and Clark, 2019). Moreover, they feel low in
energy and remain anxious.
Depression – it is also impact of psychological abuse on women. they feel depressed as it effect
on their mental health. there occurs various mood swing in women. apart from it, they remain
sad and get angry on small things. also, there is decline in their productivity due to which they
are not able to work in effective way. The behaviour is completely changed. so, it highly impact
on their well being as they are not able to eat heathy meals, sleep well, etc.
Mental illness – Usually, psychological abuse impact on women mental health more as compared
to their physical health. It is because in their mind those things keep moving. so, it is found that
5

women get stressed due to abuse. also, there is change in their behaviour as they get irritated on
small things. so this shows signs of mental illness which impact on their health and well being.
self harm – sometimes, there is such a great impact on women that they harm themselves. it is
because they do not want to live. their mental stability is completely lost and due to it they do not
feel safe. It creates a negative image in their mind about society. so, they do such things which
results in harming themselves.
Measures to prevent abuse
As elucidated by Kelly, and Novaco, 2016 it is necessary to identify and prevent abuse
so that women social life can be improved. There are many ways of preventing abuse but it
depends on type of abuse. However, it is useful in improving mental health of women by giving
them social support. if abuse is not determined then it can not be prevented. so, by analysing
behaviour of women it is easy to identify reason behind it. moreover, by communicating with
women and asking what problem is. it can be used as well. henceforth, the measures are
Providing social support – it is a measure which can be used to prevent abuse. here, women can
be given social support by sharing her problem and making her feel comfortable. in this relatives,
friends, family members etc can provide social support to them.
Taking legal action – This measure is taken when there is intense and regular abuse faced by
women. also, when there is sexual and physical abuse done to women. thus, by taking legal
action it can be prevented. there are certain laws followed in it. therefore, legal action is taken
against person who is involved in it.
Building support network – here, a network can be built which consists of consultant, peers,
friends etc. and then their support can be taken. it will helpful in communicating with them and
sharing views, opinion, problem etc. so, in difficult times their support can be taken. it will be
useful in spending time with them and taking their support in need. hence, they can provide
solution to problem to them.
in the view of Mills, Hill and Johnson, 2018, in spite of some strict laws psychological
abuse still exist. the main reason behind is illiteracy of people and unawareness among women
regarding those laws. they are not able to complaint about abuse which they face. In addition to
it, there prevail certain strict social norms and values which restricts women to complaint about
it. So, in many society women rights are not protected. However, in order to prevent abuse it is
essential that women need to be made aware about their rights. there must be training and
6
Document Page
education programs organised which will be useful in it. this will educate women and make them
aware about laws and their rights. Apart from that, it is found that most young women face
domestic violence due to their partner. it is because they drink alcohol which bring in change in
their behaviour. this directly impact on their relation. thus, it leads to begin in fights and the
partner do abuse women in physical way. with this women also start consuming alcohol to
remain stress free. also, they start feeling depressed and sad. They do not like to interact with
other people and does not share anything. moreover, there is change in behaviour of women. in
many cases of abuse it is found that even complaints are done then also the partner abuse them.
in that police or legal authority does not take effective action against them. so, it results in rise in
abusing activity on women.
METHODOLOGY
A research is conducted with help of several methods that are applied into it. the methods
are selected on basis of nature and type of research. Also, it provides a framework to scholar that
how study has to be conducted. Similarly, in present research a well, the methodology is defined
with help of PICO framework. In that a question is formed which is defined as below
P- patient Young Women
I- intervention Psychological abuse
C- comparison Dealing with psychological abuse
O- outcome Prevention of psychological abuse
Research philosophy – it refers to the overall framework of how entire research is done. By this
it is easy for scholar to do it in systematic way. there are different philosophies available that are
realism, positivism, interpretivism, etc. basically, knowledge is developed in it by analysing info.
Realism is based on assumption whereas positivism is based on study of scientific approach.
However, interpretivism focus on issues in subject (Stylianou, 2018). hence, in this
interpretivism philosophy will be used. it will help in finding out issues occurring in
psychological abuse of women.
Research strategy- this is known as process which is used in gathering of data. this makes it
simple and effective enough for scholar to gather data in proper way. there are two strategy
followed that is qualitative and quantitative. so, in qualitative only theoretical data and info is

collected. this is useful in gaining more knowledge about topic. the theories and concepts are
evaluated and linked with topic. on contrary, in quantitative numeric data is gathered. then it is
interpreted to obtain precise outcomes. this research will use qualitative strategy. the scholar will
gain insight on abuse done to women and its impact.
Research approach- it shows that how data will be gathered and analyse in research. so, for this
there are 3 approaches used in it such as deductive, abductive and inductive. abductive is used
for using some facts in it and completion of process. deductive is used to make certain
assumptions which are valid in it. This is based on hypothesis. inductive is used to propose
theories of research. but there is no hypothesis in it. thus, in present study, inductive approach
will be used. It will be useful to link psychological abuse and its impact on mental health and
well being of women (Adams, and Beeble, 2019).
Research design – the researcher requires a plan to conduct study. thus, design provide various
steps to proceed in step by step way. in this there are 2 design in it i.e. exploratory and
conclusive. in first one topic is explored to gather more knowledge about it. this enables in
linking it with other areas. whereas in conclusive only conclusion is made to made of study.
furthermore, conclusive is categorised into 2 that is descriptive and casual. hence, in this study,
exploratory will be used. more data and info will be collected regarding types of psychological
abuse and how it impact on women mental health and well being.
Data collection- this is significant element in study as it shows that what type of data is to be
gathered and from which sources. the data needs to be collected properly so that precise
outcomes are obtained. Also, research results depend on what type of data is collected. there are
two methods in it that is primary and secondary. in primary first time data is gathered by using
various approaches such as questionnaire, survey, interview etc. But in secondary previous data
is collected from articles, journals, etc. thus, in current study, both methods will be used. here,
previous data will be gathered from journals and primary from questionnaire.
Sampling – in order to select sample from population, it is necessary to find out sample so that
data is gathered from them. the process of selection of sample from population is known as
sampling. there are several criteria which is used in it. Generally, there are two types that is
probability and non probability. in probability each one is having equal chance of selection but
on other hand in non probability chances are unequal. In both method there are many sub
8

methods as well. thus, scholar will use cluster method in it. the sample size will be 30 young
women (Birtel, Wood, and Kempa, 2017).
Data analysis – this is also crucial in research methodology as it is process of interpreting data to
generate relevant outcomes. there are various types of methods and techniques which is used in it
but it depends on type of study and data gathered. also, it depends on scholar willingness as well.
Moreover, researcher must have knowledge of various methods to be used in analysing data to
obtain results. thus, in current study thematic analysis method will be used. it will help in
creating graph and table of different themes.
Ethics- While conducting research, there are some ethics which must be followed by the
researcher. Various rules and regulations are formed to conduct research in an ethical manner.
Thus, researcher followed some rules. First of all, the consent of women has been taken who are
involved in research. Also, each individual dignity was maintained and they were respected and
treated in an equal manner. Alongside it, data collected and results obtained have been protected
and secured in database. Moreover, while gathering data, people were allowed to skip questions
if they do not want to answer.
CONCLUSION
From above it is summarised that women are facing different types of psychological abuse
like sexual, physical, domestic violence etc. due to which there is impact on their mental health
and well being. the abuse is occurring in society, family, job and many other places. it has led to
rise in cases of domestic violence faced in society due to lack of money, social support. Usually,
they are abused by their partners or family members. there is long term impact of abuse on
women on their health. besides that, there are various impact of abuse on women mental health
such as suicide attempt, depression, mental illness etc. it all results in impacting on their well
being as they are not able to eat and get enough sleep. However, there are various measures
which can be taken to prevent abuse like providing social support, taking legal action, building
social network etc. It will help in communicating with women and sharing their views and
problems. thus, support will be provided by interacting with them. the research methodology is
framework which consists of various elements in it like approach, design, data collection etc.
