1PSYCHOLOGY COUNSELLING THEORY AND PRACTICE
Introduction:
The role-play practice is designed in order to reflect the interaction among the
professionals and the individuals practicing so that they can implement a better professional
relationship to achieve a better outcome. The practice ensures the professionals to respect the
decision of the person and it also enhances tolerance and situation handling capabilities of a
nurse (Vizeshfar et al. 2016). The assignment will reflect upon my experience I had while
working with my team and how practicing role play help me in enhancing my abilities in my field
of practice.
Thoughts:
While I was practicing as nutrition practitioner, we were all divided into groups and were
allowed to assess patient regarding their nutritional uptake and related issues they were facing.
It was a little difficult at the beginning since I was anxious due to the new experience. However,
I feel I communicated well initially with the patients which boost my self-confidence. I assured
the patient about her past experience which also boosts my confident as a practitioner to serve
the patient for their wellbeing.
Experience:
Considering the interview session, the optimistic experience about the incidence was
communicated well with the patients, highlighting I have strong therapeutic communication
skills. I gave her assurance about her past experience by showing empathy and clearly
communicated with patient, I was warm with the patient. This experience further highlighted my
humanistic skills, which I would be incorporate about my future skills. However, from the past
practice experience I realized myself that I framed scaling questions early, immediately after

introduction rather than creating a compassionate environment where it would be comfortable
for patient to respond to the questions. Moreover, I was not clear about the goal and I was in
hurry while I was communicating which further highlighted the gap in practice. I could have
suggested seeing a psychologist as an acknowledgement of my limitations, highlighting that I
lack the self-awareness skills which can be improved through training and gaining knowledge.
Improvement:
The role play practice guided me to understand a people and work accordingly. It has
helped me gain trust of the people and taught me to respect one’s choices and decisions, as
these two factors are the chief part of building an effective therapeutic relationship. The
improvements I have observed that I have to improve certain skills which are crucial for a
practitioner to serve better to the society. I would require to improve my nonverbal skills such
as not rushing too much during practice, gaining patience while communicating with the
patients which would comfort and empowered the patient and I was not clear with the goal. It
is the duty of the practitioner to set a clear goal for faster recovery of patient(Thornton and
Persuad 2017).
.
Strengths and weaknesses:
The strength that I observed from the role play practice was that I have good
communication skills which I would incorporate in my future practice to facilitate my practice. I
have humanistic skills such as empathy, compassion and respect. The weakness of mine I have
evaluated that the practice which I am lacking patience, self-awareness which I would be
require to improve by gaining experience from the practice and with the help of my supervisor.
