1MY FAMILY ENGAGEMENT
My Family Engagement Story
We are four people in the family, me, my two sons, aged eleven and four, and the
father of my youngest son. I have a pretty good family engagement. I believe in balance and
thus always try to ensure that I give all of them their personal space while making sure that
we do some things together. My kids are young and thus, there is a lot of chores that needs to
be done. On workdays, I have to get my older son ready for school, get myself ready for my
work or school and do the household works before I leave. I ensure that my son takes a
shower and has his breakfast. I also cook food for everyone, wash the dishes and clean the
rooms before I leave. After my older son, it is time for my younger son to get ready. I help
him with his daily routine and after he leaves, I get ready and leave for wither my job or my
school. Being a mother who both works and studies, I need to make sure that my kids are
properly fed and ready for their day.
I also receive some help from my partner. When I am ill or am not able to do the
regular chores, he steps in and gets the kids ready. Due to the increasing busy and demanding
lifestyle, sometimes there are conflicts and quarrels in the house. I believe that my children
might be affected due to these and make sure that I do not express my distress overly to them.
I don’t want them see me crying and asking why I am sad. Due to the workload, I take time to
study along with my younger son. My older son likes to study on his own and doesn’t much
like being supervised. I give him the space though I believe that it is time that I give more
attention to him. My eldest son is somewhat addicted to internet and computers. This
hampers his studies. When I tell him about it he becomes upset. Being a teenager he does not
understand the bad effects it might have on him.
My younger son probably is facing bullying in school. He sometimes asks me,
“Mommy, am I ugly?” Though I have assured him several times, he asks me frequently. I

2MY FAMILY ENGAGEMENT
have decided to talk to the principal of his school about it. I intend to become more engaged
with my family. I really do miss the times when we could sit together and have good time,
watch movies and play games or go out for dinner. During the weekends we do go out for
church. My son is generally excited about it as he gets the chance to mingle with his cousins.
Due to the workload and stress, we do not generally celebrate thanksgiving, Christmas or
other festivals but we do celebrate the birthdays of the kids. I believe that there is no reason
to compare my family with anything else as every family has different dynamics and I do
really love my family.
