Public Health Nursing Role in “Healthy Ageing”
Introduction
This paper discusses public health nursing role in healthy ageing as a PHC nurse role amongst
the seniors in Australia. This paper will talk about five strategies which can be proposed for the
Ottawa Charter health promotion which enables the people to increase the control over their
health. These factors also helps in improving the public health which articulates the central
values of participation, empowerment and equity. This paper will talk about five strategies
required for the promotion of public health community of Australia. The Australian population is
comprised of aged population at a major percentage. The first strategy is “Creation of healthy
public policy in every governmental sector” followed by “Creation of supportive environments
for the improvement of working and living conditions”. The third strategy is “Strengthening the
community action in strategy and priority settings”, fourth being “Development of personal skills
via education for life skills and health sections” and finally ending with “Restoration of health
services towards the promotion of health (WHO, 2009a)”. These strategies will enable te peole to
reach their full health potential.
The PHC healthy ageing nurse will seek to organize a meeting for all stakeholders in the
community to bring government reps, NGOs and community members to discuss how best they
can tackle determinants of healthy ageing (Phillips & Miltner, 2015).

The aged people of Australia have to be supported to live in a setting of their own
choosing and properly receive service which promotes autonomy, meet their preferences as well

as enhance social connection (Devi & Singh, 2018). Public health nurses must identify potential
opportunities for supporting healthy ageing programs which encompass re-enablement initiatives
in every setting. The primary role of public health nurse is to prevent the condition of injury,
illness or disability among the selected group of people taken for the study. The secondary role
of public health care nurses is to provide health promotion and maintain a healthy condition
among the Australian population.Public health nurses have to remain competent to acknowledge
and react to deterioration, cognitive alongside a functional drop in elderly Australians as well as
be skilled and educated to give proper care (Flicker, 2018). Public health nursing curriculums
must be age-inclusive as well as clinical support placement in all aged-care contexts. Public
health nurse-led care models must be developed, implemented as well as appraised to support
healthy ageing besides informing policy for senior Australians. Public health nurses need to get
sufficient education and professional preparedness to correctly identify as well as challenge
stereotypes which promote attitudes of ageist (Zaidi et al., 2017). Public health nurses are
essential in identifying and compulsory reporting abuse of the elderly. Senior Australians with
multiple features and life-experiences must have equitable access to info and services to
accomplish their needs (Brown, Care & Australia, 2020).
B: Ottawa Charter Strategies
PHC public health nurses have a critical role in implementing the Ottawa Charter
strategies in health promotion to ensure proper healthy ageing through advocating for healthy
ageing. This condition will enable a condition ofhealthy ageing and mediating for healthy ageing
by discouraging the ageist attitude (Bakhshi, Sun, Murrells & While, 2015).

Restoration of health services
towards the promotion of
health (WHO, 2009a)
To take care of the fact that all the
health services follows the guidelines
for better public healthcare as
provided by WHO.
C: Consumer Group- Elderly People
The chosen consumer group is aged Australians. The elderly Australian population
consists of people who have lived in the world for a long time and are at an age of above 65
years. This word is used to describe the people who are continuing above the twenty first century
and beyong. The community selected for this study was observed to suffer from the chronic
disease (myocardial infraction) at a very elevated rate. This health concern will be taken care of
by the public health nurses who will support the community of the affected people. According
government report, this group remains vulnerable and hence must be cared for by the public
health nurses. As reported in this government report on healthy ageing, the health of raising the
number of aged Australians remains a significant economic and social challenge encountering
Australia (Zaidi et al., 2017). It is further an opportunity since prolonging a lifespan of better
health allows seniors to continue with their contribution economically, socially, and socially to
the broader society (Patel, 2016).
An array of variables dictate the senior’s ability to stay healthy as they age; which
include many behavioral alongside biomedical risk factors as well as continuous social besides
mental well-being. In Australian nine in ten senior believe they have someone outside their
household in whom they might confide (Gordon et al., 2019). Over nine in ten seniors indicated
that they had assistance available in crises time from an outsider and one in eight senor stood

involved in education, training or employment. Two in five elderly persons indicated being
adequately active in the course of proceeding week, while seven in ten seniors were either obese
or overweight (Prasher & Janicki, 2018).
When contrasted with individuals aged eighteen to sixty-four, senior Australians (65+) do
well on specific measures, but worse on others. They do poor in being sufficiently active (35%
versus 48%), obese/overweight (72% versus 61%). Thus, public health nurses have a role in
discouraging the elderly from the actions they perform poor in and encourage those they do
better in to ensure healthy ageing (Viña, RodriguezMañas, SalvadorPascual, Tarazona
Santabalbina & GomezCabrera, 2016).

Conclusion
The work environment of a public nurse makes it increasingly easy to take advantage of
routine interactions with elderly patients and utilize it as the chance to educate them on tips to
live longer. This shows the connection between the public health nurse’s role in healthy ageing
and health promotion. This is effective since it takes the opportunity to educate the seniors to live
longer.
