CONFLICT BETWEEN CARTHAGE AND ROME
Introduction:
The paper is about the fight of Carthage and Rome, and how the conflict between these
two cities makes made Carthage more or less equal to Rome. The paper verges on the topic of
Rome’s rise of naval power especially which took place after the conflict. Both Carthage and
Rome were very powerful and popular places in ancient Europe. And the influence is a lot
similar to the people, compared to both the cities Carthage and Rome.
How Carthage climbed up the social ladder, reaching Rome:
Carthage was a very popular city. It was founded by the Phoenecians who are now called
Lebanese. They city is located in the country of Tunisia in north of Africa. Rome a Carthage
became rivals around by 264 B.C. basically or the control of the Mediterranean Sea. The
Mediterranean Sea lying in between the two countries was a very important resource for the two
countries to control and take advantage of. The waterways provided a good route for trading and
merchandising. Therefore the Western Mediterranean was the sole reason behind the conflict of
these two cities- Carthage and Rome. In the First Punic War, which took place in the 264-241
BC, Rome conquered Sicily, gaining control of it and making it Rome’s fist province. The defeat
of Sicily made the Carthage to be more determined and aware of the power of the Romans. They
strengthened their trading with the Spanish and set up a powerful Empire trading with them.
After that Sicily was recognized as the first province of Rome. The Romans being unsatisfied,
wanted to gain more power therefore they set for the battle against Carthage (Hoyos, 2015).

including elephants over the Alps and entered Italy destroying almost everything. Around Ten
years there was lot destruction and defeated Rome several times. Though he lost the battle of
Cannae in 216 BC. He fought bravely but still couldn’t hold on to concluding the war.
Strength of Rome:
The Romans couldn’t defeat Hannibal and so they planned to leave him and fight against
the Spanish and Carthaginians. The General Scipio Africanus of the Roman Army, fought
against the Carthaginians in Spain and defeated them and the general Hannibal in the Battle of
Zama. In 201 B.C. Carthage fell surrendering to Rome. Soon Rome rose to be a stronger power
in the Western Mediterranean. Carthage became weak and fell, having no army or empire (Ruiz,
Molinos, GaláN, Chica & Rodríguez 2017).
Conflict leading to Rome being a Naval Power:
The war against Carthage led to the development of Roman artillery and also discovering
of routes. Since traveling and also battling was based on the waterways and sea routes therefore
they developed their armory and thus their naval power increased. The Romans fought against
Carthage with all their might and defeating them made their empire more strong and there no
problem of any attack as Carthage was the only sole powerful threat to the Romans.
Conclusion:
The Romans defeated the Carthagenians and one of their strongest leaders- Hannibal, it
was a challenge for the Romans an also their pride and culture were at stake. But defeating
Carthage, the Romans didn’t have to look back. It was a tough and serious situation to handle.
Carthage on the other hand being equal of Rome lost to it ultimately, and in 146 B.C., it
surrendered to Rome, an was completely defeated.
