Your Notes: Mr. K is 68 years old and lives in Suburbs of New York with his family of wife, son
and three grandsons. He had worked as a high school instructor with specialization in statistics.
His house is a three bedroom two bathroom apartment. Mr. K has a fulfilling social life and
attends the church and social functions such as cultural festivals. The person is a staunch believer
in Christian religious principles and prefers attending the church on Sundays along with his
grandsons. Mr. K mentions that “I like visiting the church for offering prayer. It also gives me
the opportunity to interact with people from the community. It gives me a sense of satisfaction”.
His clothing preferences are supported by his family and he appreciates the same. “Thankfully
my son and grandsons do not say anything negative with my clothing style and its good”. Mr. K
is capable of undertaking self-care and does not need support for carrying out basic activities of
daily living such as washing and clothing. He points out that “I am fit enough to carry out the
basic activities and want to remain healthy till I die”. “I spend most of the time at home watching
television and my favorite shows are those related to science and travel. My grandsons watch
television only for two hours in the evening and that gives me enough time to surf through the
channels whenever I want”, says Mrs. K. This reflects that he has a personal space within his
home. He further points out that he is content that he does not have to experience abuse or
neglect from his son and grandsons due to his old age. “I take pride in saying that I could raise
my children and grandchildren in a good way as they are sensitive enough to behave
appropriately with elders and give them the respect”.

computers and work as a personalized decoder that fetch me $100.” Though the source of

can provide him with job opportunities. “I wish I could get in touch with a service coordinator
who can guide me with how to create better opportunities for source of income”. Mr. K believes
that a support service would be the best place where he can share his concerns with and enhance
his quality of life. Moving on to provision for personal advocacy, he mentions that “I receive
much support from my family and they advocate for me when in need”. His family is
considerable about the preferences he has and addresses his concerns adequately.

more or less satisfied with my life. But I am heavily concerned about the future of my grandsons.
I am to admit that I am growing old and it would have been better that my grandsons live with
their biological parents. In that way they would get a better upbringing and receive maximal
support from them”. Mr. K has a positive outlook on life. “I attempt to live in peace and
harmony with my family. They have given me a sense of belonging and contentment”. My wife
is very supportive of my decisions and I can share my feelings with her. Since I am concerned
about financial matters, she helps me out with the monthly budgets and takes initiatives to save
money for our future”.

Mr. K is to join a community service provider working with elderly people to enable them
enhance their quality of life. Such a service provider is to be a certified community development
institute that has the adequate resources for supporting individuals with different needs. Mr. K
can receive support to look for job opportunities that can help him earn more. Such service
providers establish the contact between those who want to recruit people who are retired and
interested people such as Mr. K. As he is supposed to take care of his grandsons, it would be of
much help if he can earn more and support them financially (Steels 2015). Service providers also
provide regular training to individuals to augment their skills and experiences in relation to
learning new skills. Since Mr. K has a flair for repairing computers, he can learn new skills in
this regard and widen the earning opportunities (Bulmer 2015). It is further advisable that Mr. K
engages in an effective communication with his family in relation to his grandson’s stay with
him.
