The increase of student use of a cellphone in lecture has led to poor performance in final exams.
Currently, we do not know whether the use of cellphones in class causes poor performance in
academics. The need for this study is to get the lectures and students opinion about the use of the

A study was carried out with a sample of college students (n=5) and a sample of lecturers (n=5),
at Harvard University. The data collected showed the difference in opinion between lecturers and
students view on using phones during class time. It was clear that teachers believe that students
should not use phones in class. It also showed that most students using their phones during class
while teachers using phones in the class affected only a few students affect teachers.
Hypotheses to test
1. Students believe that cellphones have no effect when used in class.
2. Students believe that people can multitask.
3. Teachers believe that students using phones in class affect them.
Results
To show how occasionally students use phones in class, the mean feedback for teachers
(mean= 3.98), for students (mean= 2.06). This is clear that students use phones in class more
than teachers do.
On the issue of teachers been affected by the use of phones in a class by students, the
responses were as follows:
10% never use, 30% daily, 50% weekly and 10% once per month. This shows that teachers
are distracted most.
The hypothesis to investigate students and teachers opinion on whether phones should be
used in class used in class the results showed that 90% of teachers believe that phones should

not be used in class while 95% of students believe that phones should be used in class. This
shows that students believe in using phones in calls while teachers do not support.
Hypothesis investigating students and teachers opinion on multitasking the results were; the
mean response by students that people can multitask was 60% and teachers were 20%.
Therefore, students believe that people can multitask compared to teachers.
Generally, results showed that students use their phones in class mostly than teachers do.
Besides the study showed that students could send and receive messages in class without
been noted. Also, very few teachers bring phones to class compared to students.
