Response to Question 1
Racism of any kind is an unfortunate practice that has been prevalent in our society
since over a long period of time. This unjust practice has been questioned and protested by
numerous individuals across the globe as it is evidently degrading for an individual. In every
aspect of life racism persists whether it be in any profession, school, college or residential
area. As observed in the video segregation happens based on an individual’s native name as
well. Employers often select candidates based on an individual’s native name which in no
aspect is a justified procedure for job recruitment. Over the period of 1995 to 2015 it was
observed that white applicants received 24% more call-backs for job recruitment than Latinos
(the Guardian, 2018). This difference proves that employers tend to deliberately select
candidates based on the candidate’s ethnicity which is quite evident from an individual’s
name, rather than focusing on the candidate’s skills and qualifications (Wheeler et al.). The
unjust practice is observed in every profession no matter of how vast of an organisation or a
company it is. This effects on an individual’s moral spirit as well. In addition to this an
individual may also deviate into a wrong field of occupation due to lack of opportunity. Such
discrimination could cause hampering impact on a company or organisation as the individual
may be not suitable for the said job however was selected based on his or her ethnicity only.
Response to Question 2
Education is a basic necessity that every individual no matter of which race, cast,
ethnicity, he or she belongs to should acquire for the betterment of the individual as well as
the society. However, schools and colleges apply the quota system which restricts the
students for admission into the educational institution based on an individual’s race, ethnicity,
caste, color, and so on. This system in no means is justified. Taking into account
Carmichael’s and Hamilton’s concept of institutional discrimination a wide section of society

has to suffer as a result of racial segregation (Souhami). Such discrimination impacts on a
specific race negatively and thus slows down the rate of progress in society. For over a long
period of time, black students in United States remained behind in achieving academic
qualification due to discrimination made by the educational institutions. The results show that
in 2014 the graduation rate in high schools for white students was 87% compared to black
students who were at 73% (Nces.ed.gov, 2018). As a result of such discrimination the
unemployment rate among African Americans and Hispanics have hit a low record
(Data.bls.gov, 2018). Therefore, a wide section African Americans and Hispanics are affected
due to the quota system that limit the students to be admitted in suitable educational
institutions. The mass failure rate impacts negatively on a specific race and thus hampers its
progress in society. For the implementation of such practice in colleges numerous individuals
despite of qualifying skills fail to achieve success in society. Hence, the admission of students
based on his or her ethnicity and race using quota system is an unjustified act that impacts a
wide category of race negatively.
