INTRODUCTION
In culture there are different values, ethics, beliefs, etc. That are practiced and followed. So,
on basis of it sub caste is formed. Race and ethnicity is becoming a major issue in present times.
It is because people are highly discriminating them on basis of sex, gender, caste, creed etc.
However, in society as well it has become a concern that how things are changing with adoption
of new culture (Bolin, and Kurtz, 2018). Race means physical difference which occurs in
society and groups and ethnicity is shared culture based on language, beliefs, practices, etc.
Usually, difference occurs on basis of these two only as people. In modern times culture has
become a part of race and ethnicity.
In this report it will be described about how popular culture can be used to promote social
change. Also, some examples will be explained as well.
MAIN BODY
Is it possible to use popular culture to promote social change? Discuss with example.
In every culture there are different value, ethics, and many other things that are practices and
followed by people. A culture is ideas, customs and social behaviour which reflect that to what
society they belong to (Bonds, 2019). Besides that, it shows group of people that what
practices, values, ethics, are followed by them. There are various types of culture that exists. It is
represented by groups of people and values. Sociology is a wide term that is used to study and
analyse changes that occurs within society and how impact on culture. Besides there are several
social norms which are followed in culture. These norms are related to social change. So, any
change in these norms highly impact on culture as well. Change is the law of nature. It occurs in
every aspect which is adopted by society and humans. Social change has revolved entire
humanity. The society is evolving and accepting change from time to time.
In recent times, there are many social changes that have occurred in society. It has transformed
way of perception of people and brought drastic change in it. Alongside, social changes is
changing our day to day life as well. Now only in western culture but also in Indian culture as
well social change has occurred (Flores, Brown, and Herman, 2016). It is related to culture
norms and ethnicity which represent a particular group. Social change refers to change in
human interaction and relationship which transform cultural institutions. This has high impact
on society for long time period. It is evaluated that no society has remained constant. However,
there is change in our way of interacting with others, listening to them, accepting what has

changed, etc. It is essential for people to accept what change has occurred. The change reflects
our shared values. Apart from it, social change modify behaviour, relation, etc. of people in
society. Thus, amendments are made in value, ethics by society and they have to accept that for
long time period. Furthermore, there are many causes as well of this that is technology,
environment, population and social institutions. Generally, there are two types of social change
that is positive and negative (Graham,. and Echols, 2018). These both have an impact on
society. Human values are formed by a similar process and act in a similar manner. Although the
word is commonly used with reference to ethical and cultural principles, values are of many
types. They may be physical cleanliness, organisational communication, psychological courage,
mental objectivity, or spiritual harmony, love. Values are central organising principles or ideas
that govern and determine human behaviour. On contrary the skill or attitude that may be
specific to a specific physical activity or social context, values tend to be more universal in their
application. It is then expressed in everything that is done by individuals. Values is known as the
essence of the knowledge gained by humanity from past experiences distilled from its local
circumstances and specific context to extract the fundamental wisdom of life derived from these
experiences. It gives direction to people thought processes, emotions and actions. There is past
history of various fundamentals of social change inclined with cultural development. Injustice
and oppression are seen with examples such as the abolition of slavery, racism and sexual
equality. It is necessary to promote social change so that people are aware about what change
has occurred and how it affect on culture. So, for that various sources are used such as social
media, etc. the change in communicated to people in effective way (Keskinen, Tuori, and
Mulinari, 2016).
Culture plays significant role in accepting change. This is because it contains values and
practices which are followed by people. Other than this, any change in those practices directly
impact on beliefs and ethics of people. There is change in way of following of culture, etc
besides when social change is adopted it create a new norms to be applied. The group of people
are highly affected due to it. In present times, social change is now promoted with help of
culture. It means that whenever there has to bring in transform in human interaction then culture
is used to promote it. Through that it becomes easy to reflect that what change has occurred and
how it has impacted on society and culture. Moreover, it shows that how relationship within
social institutions and culture has changed. There are many examples of social change that can

be promoted through culture. it has been identified that there is high impact of social change on
culture. it has resulted in transform in human interaction as new practices are formed and
applied. However, in some culture social change is adopted but taken a lot of time but in some it
is difficult to adopt it as impact is negative (Costa, , Brill, and Brown, 2017).
Here, an example of social change is women rights. It is movement which state that in society
women must be given equal rights as men. So, it is found that in society women are not given
equal rights as compared to men. They were discriminated on various aspects due to which they
have to suffer. Hence, this change belongs to maintaining equality in culture and giving equal
rights to women as well. It enables in creating same relationship of women with society and
men. The change will allow women to follow same rules, ethics value etc that is being
followed by men. Besides, it protect rights of women as well in culture. It is different from
feminism as here change is of giving equal rights to women but in feminism means to treat and
respect equally (Espinosa, Turk, and Chessman, 2019).
Therefore, slowly women were given equal rights similar to men. It brought drastic
change in behaviour, perception etc within society. In addition, human interaction and
relationship was transformed in it. It was analysed that people started behaving with respectful
manner to women. Besides, in all aspect women were given equal rights and opportunities. They
were not discriminated on basis of gender or not considered as weak. Furthermore, equal rights
social change created a positive impact on society for long term. Also, through it culture was
promoted as well. It reflected that women are part of society and they contribute in social life.
So, they must be given equal rights. So, in order to implement this change culture was used. In
that it was promoted that giving equal rights to women brings positive impact. In all culture
women was given dignity and respect. They were given rights in terms of freedom to speech,
participate and many other. Slowly, this social change was integrated with culture and it led to
transform perception of people towards women. Hence, their behaviour was changed as well. In
similar way, ethics and values were modified. Thus, in this way women rights change was
adopted slowly within culture. With help of culture women rights were promoted. It enabled in
giving equal rights to them. Alongside, in many culture ethics were modified. Therefore, society
accepted this change with new norms, ethics, etc. then culture was used to promote it as women
rights showed that a group of people should follow same ethics and values in culture.

In this there is another example that can be taken is of feminism social change. It is
defined as giving equal rights to both men and women and social equality of sexes within
society. This social movement is initiated to promote equal rights for men and women. Hence,
it also impacted on society in positive way for long time. It changed behaviour and perception of
people in relationship with social institutions. The women views and opinions were listened and
it reflected that how women is an integral part of society. So, in order to promote this culture
was followed (Preoţiuc-Pietro,. and Ungar, 2018). Here, it stated that in all areas such as
political, social, economic and other women needs to have equal rights. So, it stated that sexes
within society needs to be viewed in terms of culture. Henceforth apart from social media culture
was used to promote it. Here, by focusing on females who were not getting equal rights and on
gender equality this change was promoted via culture. It was showed that feminism in culture
needs to be exist so that women are treated equal to men. In society where women was not
treated equally then feminism change was done. Through it, gender equality was considered
within culture to promote this social change. So, as culture supported gender equality thus it was
beneficial to promote it. It reflected that women are part of society and they contribute in social
life. So, they must be given equal rights.
Apart from it, here one more example that can be taken is black life matter movement. This is
also a social change that was promoted with culture. In this it was case of death of George Floyd
in US who was killed by policemen. He was a black American. Thus, in this movement purpose
was to show that there is no need of racism in society. It means that all people irrespective of
their colour are same and equal (Pulido, , 2017). So, there is no discrimination between white
and black people. There were many protest done by people all around the world. As this social
change is new so it needs time to be adopted in society. Hence, it was also promoted with
culture. In this it was reflected that a particular group of people in culture must be considered as
equal. Furthermore, it was easy to recognise that in culture all people lives matter. This change
has highly impacted on culture as it has changed behaviour and perception of people towards
black ones. This change has occurred due to political movement in which it was stated to
eliminate racism from society. Hence, it focused on eliminating racism from culture. This was
highly useful in promoting this change. It led to transform people relation with black people in
society. This can be easily promoted via culture as it is preferred to eliminate racism which
gives sign that in society all are equal. So, people will be able to realise that not a particular

group can be discriminated on basis of colour. With help of culture it will be easy to promote the
social change (Stone, 2018).
In addition, example of modernization is taken in it in which western culture is adopted
by Indian culture. This social change revolutionized way of lifestyle of people. It was way to
improve living standard and adopt new changes in life. Thus, it was promoted with help of
culture. It reflected that modern society and culture is necessary to enhance life of people.
Therefore, new trends and patterns needs to be adopted within culture. Hence, Indian people
started adopting social change in culture. They way of listening, developing relationship etc
were changed. Along with it, by promoting modernization in culture it was easy to change
behavior and perception of people. Furthermore, culture reflect what practices are followed,
communication, language, etc of people. So, in Indian culture people started adopting new style,
fashion, values etc in their culture. When culture is modernize it automatically brings changes
into values and practices adopted by people. They try to find out new ways of representing their
culture. Aside existing practices some new ones is added as well into it (Saenz, and Morales,
2019).
However, LGBT women change be promoted with help of culture. Here, it state that how
women of transgender, and other are not given equal rights in society. Also, they are being
discriminated on basis of gender and sex in it. Hence, with culture it can be initiated that no
discrimination is done on basis of sex. So, culture is suitable for it to promote this change. It
enables in providing a framework of how discrimination is to be eliminated and what changes
are done in it. Therefore, by following concept of equality it is easy to promote LGBT women
social change. Furthermore, in culture it can be implied that women should be treated equally as
men. Thus, there is ease in adopting this change. Besides, things are changed differently on
basis of race and ethnicity. Culture is useful in promoting of ideas, concepts, social interaction
through social change. It reflects that there needs to be equality within culture. Also, if culture
is used to promote change then it is in benefit of society only. There is positive impact on it as
there is change in ethics values to be applied. So, it is easily adopted by people in their culture.
But on other hand, there are some social change as well which can not be promoted
through culture. It is because it create a negative impact on it. Besides, they changes practices
followed which is not adopted. Hence, it is stated that it is possible to use culture to promote
social change. There is interrelationship between as social change occurs within society. Besides

as culture contain ethics and values it is useful in promoting social change (Bolin, and Kurtz,
2018). Usually, social changes are related to culture so it becomes easy to incline it with
culture. This is reflected from various examples given that feminism is promoted through
culture as it depicted gender equality and giving equal rights to women. So, in this culture played
a vital role as it led to bringing transformation in interaction with women. Besides there was
change in social interaction as well that how equal rights is to be given. However in some
change it needs to be considered other way of promotion. There are things related to it
transform entire human interaction that is not as per culture norms. Hence, use of culture in
promoting of social change depends on what type of change is and how it will affect on
culture. It is essential that change is inclined with culture. So, through that it becomes easy to
promote it via culture. Alongside, social change focus on bringing new values to be followed. It
means that whenever there has to bring in transform in human interaction then culture is used to
promote it. Through that it becomes easy to reflect that what change has occurred and how it
has impacted on society and culture. Moreover, it shows that how relationship within social
institutions and culture has changed. There are many examples of social change that can be
promoted through culture (Bonds, 2019).
CONCLUSION
Hereby, it is summarised that there race and ethnicity are part of culture as it consists of
shared value and practices followed by people. Furthermore, social change occurs in regular
time period within culture. It highly impact on it for long time. Besides, social change refers to
change in human interaction and relationship which transform cultural institutions. There are
many changes that has occurred as women rights, black lives matter, LGBT rights, feminism
etc. so, all these are being promoted with help of culture. There is change in behaviour, ethic
values etc in society. But they are being slowly adopted within culture in effective way. It is
possible to promote social change with culture.
