1IMPORTANCE OF HUMAN RIGHTS
Racial discrimination has been in existence since the times of the colonial era. The
powerful countries of the European continent became ambitious in the beginning of the
eighteenth century and wanted to conquer more territories and natural resources of the world
(Lauren 2018). This led to attack of the powerful countries on the weaker nation states. This led
to the expansion of the control of the powerful states over the weaker states which also meant
that the native people were under the rule of the foreigners. Such a nature of colonialism led to
the inter-mixing of cultures and the consequent comparison and competition among the different
races. This essay seeks to discuss the impending threat of racial discrimination that is faced by
the people of Australia which has necessitated the inception of a new United Nations Day to end
racial discrimination among the people of Australia.
Racial discrimination is a unique feature with its basis in colonialism. When the ‘white’
superior leaders of the European countries annexed the territories of the Far East inhabited by the
‘black’ skinned people, they justified their conquest on the ground that ‘black’ people are
barbarians and hence, are not capable to rule themselves (Edelman, Luca and Svirsky 2017). As
a result, the idea that ‘blacks’ are inferior and the ‘whites’ are superior has found a strong
foothold within the human society. Racial discrimination is significantly felt by the people of the
aboriginal tribe in Australia, especially those living in the Torres Strait Island (Short 2016).
Australia is one of the continents of the world where the population of the tribal people is
significantly very high. This possess a huge challenge for the Government of Australia to ensure
that the tribal people are integrated with the mainland population to a considerable degree as this
would guarantee a quality standard of living for the tribal people.
Racial discrimination often manifest itself by the way of giving certain obvious favors
and advantages to certain class of people but not extending the same to the other classes of

people. Moreover, racial discrimination can take the undesirable manifestation of hatred and at
times, even harm and bodily injury to an individual. As a result, there is an immediate need for
the Government of Australia to ensure that all the citizens of the country are treated equally
(Jonason 2015). The need is to treat equal people equally. In other words, the government of
Australia needs to formulate certain rules and policies which would ensure that the tribal people
and the aboriginals are being able to have an easy access to education and work opportunities.
All of these factors are essential for enjoying a quality standard of living.
For this purpose, a need has been felt to commemorate one day of the year as the United
Nations Day to end racial discrimination. United Nations is the international organization
committed to the idea of guaranteeing the universal rights and freedom to the people. On this
day, the government of Australia can organize workshops and seminars where lectures can be
given on the importance of treating people equally and without discrimination.
