Strategy to Prevent Racism in Classrooms
The act of ‘Racism’ in schools occurs when the teachers treat students differently or
students interact with each other in a non-benevolent way depending upon their complexion,
caste, religious differences and many other similar factors. It is the duty of the teachers to
avoid this kind of discrimination amongst the students and help them to generate a free and
healthy communication in the class (Brookfield, 2018). To accomplish this, the teachers need
to implement effective strategies, the first one being engaging the students in a common
activity or a lecture. If the students tend to concentrate on their subjects and be attentive to
the purpose for which they are in the class, they will focus less on discriminating amongst
themselves.
The teachers also need to avoid favouritism amongst the students. Any kind of biased
behaviour due to racism leads to treating students separately while punishing those (Graham
et al., 2019). The teachers end up being less strict with the ones favourite to them. Hence, to
avoid this the teachers should either stop quick-fix punishments practise or punish everyone
equally without any bias. The last thing that a teacher should do is nurture their relationships
with the students and influence them to do the same. They should hear out their doubts
attentively and provide effective solutions, thereby helping them in every possible way
regarding their studies.
