Chapter eight to ten of, Gary. R. Morrison’s book “Designing Effective Instruction” indicate
about the methods through which instructions can be improved in an organization. The author
states that the effectiveness of the instruction depends on how the information is presented to
the learner. I can connect with the pre-instructional strategies as described by the author. It
was used by the management of the organization for which I worked for. The introduction to
the instructions helped me to learn better by preparing me for the task.
The rationale for the selection of a particular instruction strategy is based on the content,
function, and task. I agree with the rationales used by the organization and designing the best
strategy which meets the requirement of the project. The importance of effective instruction
cannot be ignored by anyone using such method for improving knowledge.
Chapter nine of the book emphasizes on the materials required for instructional training
within an organization. These materials are an important point for the development of
instruction and should fulfill the objective of the instruction. I also experience a similar case
when I faced an issue with the manual of a product recently purchased. The manual was not
able to satisfy the objective and the user was facing the issue and handling the product. As the
author emphasizes on "solving the performance problem", the importance of instructional
materials cannot be ignored.
Another factor which is important in the development of instruction is ‘Learner Analysis'.
The organization developing the instruction should review the learner analysis and determine
the reading level of the audience. I also feel that a manual or an instruction guide should
strike a balance between the difficult and the reading level of the users. If the instruction is
too difficult, the users may fail to understand them and if it's too simple, it may be
underestimated. A learner should be aware of the technical terms used in the manual to gain
the maximum advantage.
As the author has mentioned the heuristics for developing instructions, it tries to include all
the aspects which would enable to develop an effective instruction. These approach has been
discussed from the starting of the book and the importance of each step has been discussed.
Finally, chapter ten of the book discusses the design for the technology-based instructions. I
am surprised to know that technology-based instruction can be ineffective. As technology has
been the leading factor in all sectors, I thought that the use of technology would improve the
efficiency of instruction. It's bad when an instruction cannot meet its objective even through
the use of best technological solutions. Finally, the importance of design has been identified
for individualized computer and web-based instruction.
The author also emphasises on the importance of meeting the objective of the instruction. I
think this is very much relevant as any instruction which cannot provide information to the
user is irrelevant no matter how effectively it has been prepared. Thus the main success of an
instruction would depend on how it directs the users for the relevant steps. Finally there are
various techniques which the author demonstrates through which the design of the instruction
can be improve to ensure that it provides the necessary information to the user.
