Reflection on Registered Nurses Standards for Practice using the Gibbs Reflective cycle
Reflection allows nurses to examine their actions and experiences, allowing them to
enhance their skills and gain more knowledge, therefore, provide quality healthcare. According
to (Cladwell and Grobbel, 2013), Reflective practice in nursing increases clinical competency,
increases courage and empowers nurses. This paper describes a reflection of two nursing
standards of practice in relation t experiences during clinical placement and uses the Gibbs
reflective cycle. The Gibbs reflective cycle has six stages that include Description, Feelings,
Evaluation, Analysis, Conclusions and Action plan.

Gibbs reflective cycle
Description
During the clinical placement, the Registered Nurse ensured that all nursing students
were developed a nursing care plan for the patients. The care plan entailed assessing the patient’s
condition and collaborating with other medical professionals to develop a plan suitable for the
patient. For instance, my first care plan was for a sixty-six-year-old male with hypertension. The
RN made sure to guide me through assessment of their physical, medical and social status of the
patient, consider their preferences, previous medication and collaborate with the laboratory
technicians, physician and other nurses present during his care to come up with a suitable plan of

care. This is in line with standard five of nursing practice, which states that nurses should
develop a plan for nursing practice. According to Johnson, Edward & Giandinoto (2018), care
planning in nursing is significant as it provides the basis for patient care.
Feelings
Being involved in formulating a plan of care for a patient made me feel important and
included. This also boosted my courage when it came to educating the patient about their care
plan and about their medical condition as I was very familiar with it. Before participating in care
planning, I felt inadequate about addressing a patient regarding their condition or giving them
any medical advice. This experience not only boosted my confidence but also gave me the
chance to interact with different patients and understand their needs better.
Evaluation
The experience of care planning was mostly positive and informative. It allowed me to
study the disease condition in detail and consider patient preferences to ensure they receive
quality care. I was also able to answer any patients’ questions regarding their course of care and
their participation in ensuring better health outcomes. However, not all patients were very
receptive as I was a student nurse. Despite being informed that it was a learning hospital by the
RN, some patients preferred it when the RNs exclusively prepared their care plans. They did not
want the student nurses involved, which was understandable. Nevertheless, the experience
improved my interpersonal skills with patients and their relatives and increased my knowledge in
different medical conditions.

Care planning incorporates both standards of developing a plan of nursing practice and
evaluating outcomes to inform nursing practice. For instance, while caring for the chronic
hypertensive patient, we had to consider the outcomes of previous medical interventions and
develop a plan that incorporates interventions that only lead to better health outcomes. According
to (Muhrer, 2014) understanding, a patient’s medical history provides the nurse with the basis for
choosing the most accurate diagnostic tests and formulating a relevant plan of care. Outcomes of
the plan of care are later evaluated, which guides the course of care.
Conclusion
This experience not only taught me the importance of planning patient care and
evaluating outcomes but also significantly boosted my knowledge of the disease condition and
confidence. I will ensure to continue practicing care planning during my clinical placements.
When patients seem reluctant, I will ensure to explain to them about my aim of learning to be a
better nurse, and at the same time respect their wishes. This is one of the areas that may need
improvement. I would suggest ensuring all patients understand that the hospital accommodates
student nurses on placements to enhance their practical learning.
Action Plan
I plan to improve my practice by participating in inter-collaborative teams during
planning patient care. This not only improves knowledge and skills but also provides deeper
insight into the patients, thereby enhancing quality care provision. I will, however, have to pass
my classwork and be competent in practical skills acquired during the clinical placement. I plan
to put in more hours into enhancing practical skills through interacting with patients and taking
