A reflective note on the procurement of intra and interpersonal competencies
The current course introduced me to some theories that helped me in understanding the core
meaning of the competencies. Here I realized that competencies of a group or an individual
can only be derived after judging him or her on the scale of the work done or the results that
he achieved from the endeavors. There are two ways to look at the competency level of an
individual or a group. Firstly we can see him on his personal merits and demerits. Secondly,
we can check his performance in a team environment (Corey, 2016).
Managers and planners define competency as an ability to perform a work under an
organizational setup. This course taught me that on most of the occasions they don't count the
competencies of an individual. The academic definitions of the competency say that the
competency of a team is a sum of the competencies belonging to individuals, and
departments or the divisions working in an assembly line.
We can understand it with the help of an assembly line that is making cars. Here the unit
making wheelbases may be more competent in comparison with the units making the tires.
The competency of the tire making unit can affect the competency of the wheelbase making
unit because it can slow down the process (Hardina, 2017).
When we check the human competencies on the same scale then once again the same
principle follows. A weak team member can slow down the efficiency of the entire team.
This domino impact of the competencies can be termed as intra competency of a team. Intra
competency of a team can be improved by putting down right people at right places. This, we
can see in the case of law enforcement missions where authorities constitute some special
task forces to investigate a crime. If they are required to solve the crime at the earliest then
they try to put the most competent people on the task together to increase the competency of

the group because the intra competency of a group is the sum of many interpersonal
competencies (Day, 2014).
This course taught me the art and science of putting right set of competencies in a group, the
interaction of the interpersonal competencies can increase or decrease the intra competency
of a group. They are interconnected, this knowledge and understanding will help me in future
when I will play the role of a team player. In general terms, I can also say that the theories
taught me two very important lessons in my life. The first lesson learned in this course will
help me when I will work as a team player in any organization. The wisdom gained in this
course will help me in understating my own position in the group. After understanding my
position I can change my role in accordance with the roles that my teammates and situations
will dictate me to play. The insights gained during this course will help me in selecting the
right teams for the tasks. Striking a balance in the teams can improve the overall competency
levels of the organizations quite considerably (Ragg, 2011).
