Patient Experience in Australian Healthcare: A Reflective Essay

The Australian healthcare system is a hybrid model under which permanent residents,
refugees and citizens can buy private insurance for healthcare coverage Dixit & Sambasivan,
(2018). It provides easier access to Australian and they can improve their health by receiving
qualitative healthcare services. This reflective essay is based on Mr. Jackson who is diabetic
patient and has high BP problem. He does not exercise and smokes and it is the main key reason
of his problem. In this reflective essay, I am going to discuss effectiveness of Australian
healthcare system by asking questions from Mr. Jackson, who has had contact with Australian
healthcare system. It will discuss reasons of focusing on reflective process in healthcare system
as how it can help us out in improving decision-making process.

This study will discuss effectiveness of healthcare system by conducting interview with
Mr. Jackson, 45 years’ old who has diabetes and high BP. He smokes and does not focus on
physical exercise. He has had contact with Australian healthcare system. He can provide detailed
information of Australian healthcare system and on the basis of conversation with him,
effectiveness can be identified.
With the help of Borton's development framework, all about Australian healthcare system
can be known and it can help me out in developing strategies accordingly.

What are some roles and practices of enrolled nurse?
Duty of care and standards of enrolled nurses that helped me out in improving my health
include: providing nursing care as pet the agreed plan of care, workplace policies and
professional standards Pulok, (2019). Acting for safe outcomes for others by identifying needs to
protect people and reporting about harms and risks to responsible person.
What are some funding sources of Australia?
In this regard, Mr. Jackson stated that Australian healthcare system is funded by
Medicare that is the National health insurance scheme. This funding helps this system provide
quality care and healthcare services to all permanent residents and Australian citizens. The

Some midwife standards for practice that they need to comply with while providing healthcare
services?
There are number of standards that need to followed and comply with by midwife while
providing services such as: engaging in professional relationships as well as in respectful
partnership. Providing safety and quality in midwifery practices.
He suffers from high BP and diabetes, and associated health problems; he asked us how
public and private hospitals provide care in the Australian healthcare system. In this regard, Mr
Jackson is aware that healthcare providers take all personal information to gather information to
provide care. He said that most diabetic and high BP patients are hypertensive, and one of the
leading causes is smoking. So, their focus is on influencing patients to quit smoking and doing
physical exercise. He said that he also smokes and does not exercise, and it is a huge concern for
him and can see it as a contributing factor in his problem Hodge, A., & Varndell, (2020). Based
on his diagnosis intensity, aspirin and lipid-lowering drugs are being prescribed;
pharmacotherapy is also prescribed to patients with diabetes and high BP.
Share 2 situations where you found strength as well as weaknesses of Australian healthcare
system
In this regard Mr. Jackson said that while working with healthcare system and when I went
in public hospital then I found that hospitals keep enrolment file and put data in computers and
this data management help doctors in identifying patients with their detailed personal
information and disease from which they are suffering. It also helps the out in knowing that how
many people are enjoying intervention free survival without any contact. Each patients is
identified and given with unique identification number as it makes tracing easier. They all are
provided with appropriate resources. Capabilities and way of talking with patients by nurses and
genera professional is the main key of success of Australian healthcare system that I observed
while working with it. At the time of Covid-19, Australian healthcare system adapted telepath by
which healthcare providers provided telephone based care. So, I can say that Australian
healthcare system is flexible.
The structural system is the main weakness of this Australian healthcare system. I found
that all patients are asked with same questions such as: age, address, gender and others. It only

gives answer of some questions such as: when was treatment given, who received treatment, how
much did particular treatment cost and what was the treatment?

Based on above discussed answers regarding Australian healthcare system, it can clearly
be said that this system is effective to the great extent. There are skilled healthcare providers
who focus on providing qualitative and affordable services. Effectiveness and capabilities of
healthcare providers is the main reason of improved health of Australian, decreased patients stay
and improved life expectancy Grant & et.al. (2017). I asked Mr. Jackson about effectiveness of
Australian healthcare system by asking some additional questions and engaging him in reflective
process such as:Interrelation of life expectancy with Australian healthcare system
On the basis of answers given by Jackson, it is known that Australian healthcare system is
one of the best in the world because it focuses on providing qualitative as well as affordable
healthcare services to all age group of people. It is one of the main key reason of high life
expectancy that Australian have. Some care providers that make this system successful include:
registered nurses, medical specialists, general practitioners who provide primary care services
and allied health workers. There are some healthcare services under Medicare that are either low
cost or free for all Australians. It is beneficial for Australian as it decreases their cost and
improves life expectancy.
Mr/ Jackson shared his experience and knowledge that he gained with improved contact of
Australian healthcare system. He stated that Australia has regionally administered, universal
public health insurance program that is financed via government levy and general tax revenue.
After covid-19, this system is facing number of problems such as: ageing population, growing
risks of chronic disease, inequalities in health outcomes, workforce pressure and others Savira &
er.al. (2021).
On the other hand, Mr. Jackson said that when he went for taking medical treatment for his
family member then specialist of mental health was not available at that time. They suffered a lot
then he asks receptionist and authorized person and after that they made a call to healthcare
professional who was specialist in mental illness sector, and then he gets his family member’s
treatment done. The reason as why things might not go to plan was: increasing pressure of

Covid-19. It was the problem that he suffered. So, in this regard, it can be suggested that
Australian healthcare system needs to hire more than 2-3 healthcare professionals in each sector
for making 24*7 availability. It can decrease power imbalance situation.
Overall, I can say that Australian healthcare system needs to invest in advanced technology
and hiring more skilled workforce in order to solve all these problems and continuing with
providing qualitative healthcare services to people.

Spontaneous engagement is important in nursing and healthcare system. it helps us out in
knowing all about healthcare system and on the basis of summary of answers or information,
collected from reflective engagement, better decision can be made. Changes can be made in
healthcare system in order to improve overall health of people and making them, feel valued. In
regard to this study, I can say that reflective engagement of Mr. Jackson who has had contact
with Australian healthcare system, helped me out in knowing nursing standards, policies and
effectiveness of Medicare and healthcare system.
There are number of data published on internet but I believe that primary data by
conducting questionnaire and engaging people in reflective process can be better. We can get
accurate information by knowing experience of person to whom we have engaged in reflective
process. This reflective practice in healthcare system helps healthcare providers and nurses in
knowing their capabilities, weaknesses and job roles Mantzourani & et.al. (2019).
On the basis of results and data, they can perform their roles in a better manner. Other
main reason of considering reflective process in healthcare and nursing is to gain insight about
whole practice by knowing experience of participants. Reflection helps us out to continually
improve the way we work as well as the quality of care we give to people in healthcare system.
It can improve overall health and quality of lives of people.
Overall, I found that Jackson preferred to go to Australian healthcare system and
associated hospitals because of lower and affordable cost. Most of the medical care was free of
cost for people who come under blow poverty line. Affordability is one of the main reason as
why people like this healthcare system.
It is beneficial for healthcare professionals as they can improve their effectiveness by
sharing knowledge with others. They can help practitioners in making decision in complicated
situations that can lead qualitative performance at work. In regard to this reflective practice, I

can say that this reflective process in which I engaged Mr. Jackson, increased my knowledge
regarding healthcare sector. I came to know about nursing standards, policies and ways of
providing healthcare services to patients by Australian healthcare system Pati & et.al. (2017).

It has been summarised from the above reflective study that Australian healthcare system
is effective as it provides valuable and affordable healthcare services to Australian. I have
discussed effectiveness of reflective study and engagement in healthcare system as how
reflective engagement can provide valuable data related to healthcare system. Knowing all about
Australian healthcare system with Borton’s development framework has helped out in knowing
key areas of Australian healthcare system that makes it effective. It has also discussed some
areas in which it needs to make improvement.
