The domain for a person working as a domestic violence counselor in a local NGO set up is
psychology counseling. It is part of general psychology practice that deals with personal and
interpersonal relationships and interventions within a society. The scope of it is to use
psychology related solutions to solve mental and behavioral problems. Charles (2016) explains
that domestic violence counselor focus on social, emotional and health related problems of
victims emanating from domestic related violence’s. Root & Brown (2014) explained that
individuals suffering from domestic violence require social therapy in order to adjust to the
normal life spans and normal situations. The authors further state that domestic counseling
domain additionally covers a specialized perspective in the areas of psychological. The
qualifications and requirements in domestic counseling are to have necessary qualifications and
certifications to be practitioners.
Those domestic violence counseling psychologists are tasked with the role of serving different
age groups and individuals that require psychological help. In reference to working as domestic
violence counselor in a local NGO’s the target population whom would require counseling
services are victims from domestic violence’s (father, mother or children). Children are other
individuals that can suffer from violence emanating from their parents. Victims from domestic
violence’s require counseling treatments after they have suffered from beatings, torture and other
forms of molestations (Murray, Davis, Rudolph, Graves, Colbert, Fryer & Thigpen, 2016). The
main role of being a domestic violence counselor is to provide skills to victims to enable them
walk away from abusive relationships and live positively in life. The other goal of carrying out
the counseling therapy to the victims is to improve their self-esteem and confidence towards life
(Tomsich, unstall & Gover, 2015).
There is several practices approach that can be used in counseling of domestic victims. The
modern and effective practice approach to use is evidence based practices (EBP). The approach
entails using empirical findings to come up with effective interventions. Charles (2016) states
that the evidence based practice (EBP) can be applied by providing factual evidence in
supporting victims from domestic related violence. Root & Brown (2014) explains it further by
stating that it is a new approach that allows counselors to locate and utilize evidence based
solutions. It is based on outcome research that aims to come up with suitable interventions and
methods to solve emerging problems. Tomsich, unstall & Gover (2015) supports that evidence

based practice is relevant for domestic violence victims therapy because they are faced with
different scenarios that require distinctive remedies to address them. The approach also provides
an opportunity for the individual to monitor progress to identify areas of improvement and
interventions. Tomsich et.al (2015) further adds that the intrinsic motive of employing EBP is to
place the well-beings of domestic victims at forefront by discovering suitable practices in order
to solve mental and behavioral problems.
In conclusion domestic violence counseling is part of the human service work that requires
necessary qualifications, and practices to ensure desirable outcomes are achieved in a wider
context.
