4REFLECTIVE JOURNAL ABOUT PROFESSIONAL FIELD EXPERIENCE
Introduction:
This journal will analyze a professional field experience. The professional experience
gathered during the internship this summer. The knowledge and professional field
experiences, which I acquired from the internship period, will be analyzed in this journal. By
analyzing the situation, which I faced during the internship time, this journal discusses the
effect of that situation, interpretation of the specific situation, and decision after the situation.
I completed my computer engineering degree from (University name). I need an
internship experience to complete my engineering degree. I did my internship in Flipkart
Internet Private Limited to acquire knowledge about technology and corporate office culture.
I got the opportunity to do an internship with the technical team of Flipkart Internet Private
Limited with the help of (University name). Flipkart Internet Private Limited, an e-commerce
company, based in Bengaluru, India, initially sold books before expanding its business with
other products, such as fashion products, electronic products (Flipkart.com. 2019). The
founder of this e-commerce was Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal. Now the American
multinational retail corporation named Walmart is the owner of this e-commerce
(Walmart.com, 2019).
Discussion:
During the internship period in the Flipkart Internet Private Limited, I acquired
professional field experience. This professional field experience gives me the idea about
current and future job market whereas an employee I need to adapt to fit in a corporate office
(Davies, Lang and McNaught, 2013). As a teenager, I was interested in computers. I did my
higher education in computer engineering. In last summer, I did my internship in the
technical hub of Flipkart Internet Private Limited. I got information about the company,

specific work standards, procedures, tasks, technical support, customer service, safety
regulations, and productive interaction with senior employees. I was a team member of the
technological invention group. In this group, we as an intern were allowed to modify
technology according to our idea. In this internship time, our team headed by a senior named
Mr. John Smith.

Description of situation 1:
This internship taught me about the importance of time. Punctuality is the key to
success in a private job. The technical support hub of Flipkart Internet Private Limited uses a
biometric entry system. Through this system, they keep a track of the entry time and exit
timing of the employee. I had to travel for at least 2 hours to reach the office. Because of this,
I was late for most of the days. After the first month of my internship, our team manager John

Smith confronted me in front of other employees. I told him the reason I was being late.
However, that clarification was not sufficient. He told me to come early to the office from the
next day. This was my first internship. For me, this situation was very insulting. Punctuality
is important for the workplace (Siu and Lo 2014). Being punctual helps a person to develop a
reputation as a dependable and consistent employee in the workplace.
Description of situation 2:
From this internship, I have learned that the quality and quantity of the work need to
be maintained at the same time. This internship was for three months. The work pressure was
huge for the last two months. I was not habituated to manage this amount of work pressure.
In the production hub, as an intern, I had to learn many things in this short time. At the same
time, I had to apply that knowledge to develop technology for Flipkart Internet Private
Limited. As it was my first internship, I could not manage the work pressure. I had to
maintain a balance between the new knowledge and its application. Our team manager Mr.
John Smith was pressurizing us to enhance the quantity by maintaining the quality. At first, I
was trying to maintain the quality of production. However, I was lack behind the target. To
achieve the target I had to focus on quantity instead of quality. As a result, my quality of
work was hampered. But the company wanted to maintain its quality. At the end of my
internship, I realized that though I achieve the target, the quality of production was poor. I
understand that in the future in the new job I had to manage quality and quantity at the same
time (Noon, Blyton and Morrell 2013).
Description of situation 3:
This critical learning event taught me the meaning of professionalism. There was no
specific dress code in Flipkart Internet Private Limited (Wei and Yazdanifard 2014). I tried to
be professional in the internship time. However, my concept of professionalism was not
appropriate. I followed the formal dress code in the office. I tried to be ethical and maintain a

positive attitude and body language. I was unable to support my intern colleagues. In the first
month of my internship, I was not punctual. This attitude affected the production of our intern
team. The production of our intern team was hampered for me. In the future, I will be
punctual and professional. In the future, professionalism will help me in the corporate world.
This critical learning incident will help me to handle these types of situations (Evetts 2014).
Description of situation 4:
Before this internship, I did not have any idea about office politics. This internship
gave me the idea of office politics. I had to face office politics. With another intern, I was
developing the technology (James 2013). I did a mistake while developing the technology.
My co-intern Steve Clark was aware of the mistake. He did not do anything to stop the
mistake. He talked with Mr. John Smith and said that he had taken the corrective measures.
As a team, we were unable to complete the project. According to Mr. John Smith, I was the
reason for failure. This incident created a negative impression of me in the office. After that,
other interns started gossiping about this incident. This situation was frustrating for me. After
analyzing this professional field experience, I learned about office politics (Dillon 2014).
Description of situation 5:
This professional field experience from the internship of Flipkart Internet Private
Limited gives me a clear concept about the idea-stealing concept. In this internship time, I
acquired huge knowledge about technology. During this internship, in a workshop, I had to
develop a technology. Most of the private companies disclose personal information about the
customer. This disclosure is the most common misuse of personal information. I had an idea
to develop a technology to improve the customer experience and protect the personal
information of the customer (Aldhafferi, Watson and Sajeev, A.S., 2013). In that workshop, I
tried to give the proper shape of this idea by using technology. However, our intern team
manager Mr. John Smith used this idea and presented this idea to the head of the

technological team. He took credit for my idea and presented it, as it was his idea. He
deliberately stole my idea and used it without informing me. I did not get any credit for my
idea. This critical learning event created an impact on me. I was angry because M. John
Smith got the credit for an idea, which was not his own. After this incident, he gave
clarification and blamed me for stealing his idea without his consent. After the clarification
and allegation part, I was shocked (Wimmer et al. 2013).
Description of situation 6:
In that internship period, after the idea-stealing incident, I was angry. After this
critical learning event, I learned that controlling anger and emotion would help a person feel
more control (Scheibe and Zacher 2013). That person will be able to manage another
situation by controlling emotion and anger (Ashkanasy, Zerbe and Hartel 2016). Using the
anger in a constructively is the best way to the things, which are important will help that
person to achieve the target. After Mr. John Smith took credit for my idea without informing
me and after that, he blamed me for the incident that made me angry. My emotions and anger
were out of control. I had to handle that situation with patience. But I was unsuccessful to do
that. This critical learning event will help me to manage this type of situation in my new job
(Chu 2014).
Description of situation 7:
This critical learning event taught me in a job, work is the first and foremost priority.
Work will speak for you. Your best work performance will protect you and provide you the
way to success. In the internship at Flipkart Internet Private Limited, I was unable to manage
the work pressure. I was unsuccessful to develop the technology. In the workshop, I did a
mistake. In this internship period, my work performance was very poor. However, I learned a
huge amount of new information about technologies from this internship. I can use this
professional experience and knowledge to improve my work performance in the future. Every

company wants productive work by maintaining quality and quantity. Work performance is
important for any job (Pettigrew 2014).
Description of situation 8:
This internship provided me the professional field experience, which is important for
future jobs. I had sufficient knowledge about computer-related technology, which I acquired
from the (university name). I was confident to perform better in the internship. However, I
was wrong. Academic knowledge is important but it has huge differences with real-life work
experience. I had sufficient knowledge yet I failed to develop the technology, which would
protect the privacy and protect the personal information of the customer (Min and Kim 2015).
Work experience plays a crucial role in the job sector. I was lack of experience. With the help
of work experiences and knowledge, I might develop the technology, which would be
beneficial for the customer. After this critical learning event, I learned that academic
knowledge is important. However, it is different from real-life work experiences.
Analysis of critical learning incident 6:
In the internship procedure, our team manager Mr. John Smith stole my idea. I had an
idea to develop a technology to stop the misuse of personal information of the customer.
Without informing me, Mr. John Smith presented this idea to the technical manager of
Flipkart Internet Private Limited. He took the credit for the idea, which was not his own idea
(Bridgestock 2014)
Situation:
I suffered from the misuse of personal information in my college days. After that
incident, I wanted to develop a technology to stop the misuse of personal information. This
technology will protect personal information and provide privacy to the common people.
Disclosure of personal information invades the privacy of a person. It is the common negative

impact of the misuse of personal problems. As an intern of the technical team of Flipkart
Internet Private Limited, headed by Mr. John Smith, I tried to develop the technology. Mr.
John Smith, a senior employee of Flipkart Internet Private Limited, supervised this project.
John Smith presented the idea of this technology to the technological manager of Flipkart
Internet Private Limited. He took the credit for the technology. Mr. John Smith did not have
the idea of this technology. However, Mr. John Smith took credit for the idea. After this
incident, I was angry. I wanted to confront him at that moment in front of the technological
manager of this e-commerce company. Next day of my internship, I confronted Mr. John
Smith about this incident. He did not deny the incident but he gave a clarification, which did
not satisfy me. He told me that he had the same idea. However, he had not enough time to
develop the technology. Mr. John Smith accused me of stealing his idea. After listening to the
clarification, I had nothing to do, as I was an intern, not a permanent employee. This
professional field experience taught me a lesson about office politics and the idea- stealing
(Dinger et al. 2015).
Affect:
After completing the internship in the Flip kart Corporation, the concept of idea
stealing is clear to me. However, I had negative experiences in this summer internship. The
office politics was unknown to me. I was affected by office politics. After this incident, I was
confused, because I did not know what I should do. Without my consent, Mr. John Smith
presented my idea to the technical manager of Flipkart Internet Private Limited and took the
credit. After the clarification of Mr. John Smith, I was depressed, and frustrated because it
was my idea, which was stolen by Mr. John Smith (Marsick and Watkins, 2015).
Interpretation:
The internship in the Flipkart Internet Private Limited has taught me an important
lesson about life and office culture. After analyzing this professional field experience, I learn

one thing for my lifetime. In the future, I will be more cautious before sharing my ideas with
others. In this part, the professional field experience, which I gathered from this internship
will be interpreted. My previous knowledge, experience, and perspective, which I gathered
from my (University name), are changed now. I have never faced this type of experience in
my university time. At (University name), we learned that we should share new ideas about
technology with our guide. The guide can lead us to the right path to developing technology.
In my university days, our guide helped us. We got the necessary information, which is
important to develop the technology. However, the first professional field experience is
contradictory to my previous knowledge. In the internship period of Flipkart Internet Private
Limited, after sharing my idea with Mr. John Smith, who was our Guide for the internship
period, I faced an unwanted situation. Our guide Mr. John Smith presented my idea in his
own name and took credit for my idea. He did it without informing me about it. In this
situation, my previous knowledge is contradictory to my first professional field experience.
Now I have realized that work-life and culture are different from university knowledge and
culture.
Decision:
After the internship period, a person can judge himself and detect the positive and
negative impact of that internship experience. Reflecting back about the experience is the
way to learn from mistakes. Through the reflective thought procedure, a person can learn new
knowledge. In the future, that knowledge achieved from the professional field experience
helps the person too think in a new way and act differently. A contemporary experiential
learning theorist, an intern can learn new knowledge with a four-stage learning procedure. An
intern will face new experiences or situations in his workplace. That experience is a
professional field experience (Hammond and Collins 2013). The intern has to analyze the
new experience. After the analysis, the intern will learn new knowledge. In the future, this
Document Page
12REFLECTIVE JOURNAL ABOUT PROFESSIONAL FIELD EXPERIENCE
knowledge will help the intern to handle the same situation in a better way. I faced a problem
at the time of the internship at Flipkart Internet Private Limited. I had an idea to develop a
technology to stop the misuse of personal information and provide privacy through this
technology. Mr. John Smith stole my idea and presented it to the technical manager of the
Flipkart Internet Private Limited. By using my idea, he took credit. This professional field
experience contradicts my previous knowledge. This incident changed my perspective and
thought procedure (Kolb 2014).
After this professional field experience, I learned about another important issue. Ideas
do not have any value until they are developed (Shaw and Olson 2015). If you share your
idea with another person then that person can develop the technology by using your idea.
That person will take credit by using your idea. I have decided, in the future I will not share
any idea related to developing any technology with other people. After giving proper shape to
that idea, I can share it. An idea can be stolen but your newly developed technology or
software cannot be stolen. If I have to get credit for my idea, I need to give a proper shape to
my idea and develop new software or technology (Helyer 2015).
. Another decision I have taken after this professional field experience, that before
starting a proper job I need to do many internships. The experiences I will gather through
these internships will give me benefits to change my perspective to the corporate work
culture. Through reflective learning, I can analysis these professional field experiences. The
reflective learning procedure will help me to learn new things (Brockbank, McGill and Beech
2017). That new knowledge will help me to manage these types of situations in the future.
Conclusion:
Therefore, in conclusion, it can be said that professional field experience can change
the perspective and knowledge of a person. Professional field experience is important for

13REFLECTIVE JOURNAL ABOUT PROFESSIONAL FIELD EXPERIENCE
every person. After any professional field experience, a person should analysis that
experience to learn new things. That new learning can change the perspective, knowledge and
thought procedure of that person. Reflective learning is a process to change a person’s
perspective. After the analysis of the internship at Flipkart Internet Private Limited, I
acquired eight critical learning events. These critical learning events help me to analyze my
thought procedure, perspective. In the future, I can handle these situations properly with the
help of previous experiences. In the future, if the person faces the same professional field
experience, he can manage that situation with maturity. That is the positive impact of
analyzing critical learning events.
