Geography
Geography studies the earth’s features and how human beings interact with them. Some
areas on the earth’s surface are very large and despite them being part of a specific country, they
usually inhabit very different physical features, people and climatic conditions (William, Eric, &
Paul, 2013). Areas of these kind are broken down into regions based on the uniqueness of their
climate, people, physical properties, the interaction between the human activities and the
environment and the human impact characteristics. This paper focuses on why such areas should
be divided into regions and the necessity of the regions divided by geographers being the same as
those perceived by the individuals living in them.
First and foremost, geography scholars divide countries like Canada into regions to
facilitate ease of study. Canada is the second largest country in the world. It is divided into five
regions namely Atlantic Provinces, West Coast Region, Northern territories, Central Canada and
Prairie Region. These divisions are based upon the physical features, the people and their socio-
political and economic activities. The regional divisions aid scholars to study the diversity of the
country easily, efficiently and accurately.
Regions are also created to distinguish areas based on their climate. Climate regions are
those regions that experience the same weather patterns over a long period of time and include
deserts and Rainforests. Regions also separate areas based on vegetations and landforms (Singh,
2012). Some areas may have thick forests, high mountains, huge rivers and lakes while others
may be flat, have grass and lack either rivers or lakes. Geographers analyze this areas and group
them differently since the activities of individual living in such diverse regions would be
different based on the features of the areas they reside.

Lastly, regions are important to geographers since they majorly consist of people that
share the same culture and economic activities. For example, the Islands of Caribbean situated
between North America and South America are a region that comprise of people who speak
Dutch, Spanish, French and English with almost same economic activities and cultures (Noel,
David, & Diana, 2014). Division of this type aids in identifying, promoting and preserving the
uniqueness that exists in the different cultures and activities in different regions.
It is important for the regions defined by the geographers be the same as those perceived
by those people living in them (Freund, 2014). This ensures that the culture and economic
activities of the people living in them is promoted and preserved. Additionally, it ensures that the
physical features that play vital roles to the occupants of these regions such as those used for
economic, cultural and religious practices are well preserved.
In conclusion, division of countries into regions is very important for Geography
scholars. The regional breakdown based upon the physical features, the people and their
activities promote ease and accuracy of study among scholars. Additionally, it aids in identifying
regions climatically and based on the uniqueness of the landforms, vegetations, culture, socio-
economic and political activities of the people.
