nurse to engage in therapeutic and professional relationships with their patient. I did this by
telling the patient the benefits of interventions and letting her decide. A patient-centered care
improves patient satisfaction and healthcare outcomes.
A Positive Approach to Change and Diversity
Healthcare practitioners must have a positive attitude toward change and diversity. Through
change and diversity in healthcare, better patient outcomes are realized and patients become
more satisfied with care. Hospitals receive patients from diverse backgrounds and all these
patients deserve the best care without any form of discrimination. Nurses must also embrace
changes in the workplace and continue providing optimal care. I remember a situation when I
had to move to a partnering hospital during my placement. Their organization culture was a little
different and it took me time to adapt. They were also receiving a lot of patients from minority
groups. I was tasked with providing care for these people despite their fear of discrimination. I
embraced this form of diversity positively and in most cases, my patients were satisfied and the

results were good. I understood the importance of cultural competence because patients were
coming from different cultures. I acted according to the nursing code of ethics that requires a
nurse to provide culturally competent care to their patients.
A Flexible, Innovative Team Oriented Approach to Service Delivery
Nurses mostly work as a team to provide optimal care to patients. Fatigue can become a
challenge when nurses work singlehandedly thus affecting the delivery of care and consequently
leading to poor health outcomes. I did not believe in teamwork in my initial months of practice
because I was obsessed with taking all the credit. I had an elderly patient with urine and bowel
incontinence and she needed constant care and attention. However, I rarely asked for any of my
colleagues to help me and I was mostly fatigued. This fatigue affected my ability to provide care
until one day I was advised to be seeking help when fatigued and to be more of a team member. I
started working in collaboration with others and patient outcomes improved and most of my
patients were satisfied. I was guided by the nursing code of ethics and standards of practice that
require nurses to maintain collaborative working relationships with their co-workers and involve
each other in developing nursing care plans for the benefit of the patient.
A Positive Approach to Ongoing Self-Education and Skill Development
Continuous learning and self-education are important in nursing. There is always a first time for
everything and you may find yourself taking care of a patient whose condition you have never
witnessed or treated before. I had never treated urine and stress incontinence in my career until I
met my patient. I knew the basics but I had to take the initiative of learning more on my own
because a situation had presented itself. Through continuous self-education and skill
development, I was able to understand what my patient needed. The initial days were challenging

but as I improved, her health outcomes got better. She was more satisfied with my care plans and
I was happy with the results. I followed the nursing standards of practice that require nurses to
maintain their capability of practice through lifelong learning approaches thus enhancing their
professional growth.
