NURSING PRACTICE 1
Key selection criteria 1: A patient-focused approach to care
• I had shown exemplary performance when I was posted as a nursing intern in the
geriatric department of a hospital. There was a particular incident that required my
prompt action, and without which saving the patient would have been difficult. An older
man was hurried to the hospital, who had suffered a stroke, along with a major fall. He
was a known patient of Alzheimer’s disease and hypertension. He had to be put on
complete bed rest in an acute care facility post-discharge, but there was a conflict about
this matter from the patient’s family.especially, his daughter was not in agreement with
the decision fo the medical board.
• I, as a nursing intern, had the responsibility of providing medication assistance and
checking the vital signs at regular intervals. Guidance or counseling the patient and his
family was not delegated to me formally. While doing my regular nursing activity in his
room, I encountered his daughter. She was extremely disturbed and stressed about her
father’s health because he was gradually showing aggravation of his existing dementia.
I provided comfort and made her aware of the current medical facilities, which could
help the patient in achieving the best possible health outcomes. I also listened to her
concerns and doubts regarding the aged care facility that her father was supposed to be
admitted in, and successfully helped her overcome the fear of getting separated from
her father with sound clinical logic and reasoning. I believe it was my liability to provide
immediate response in such a situation of distress to the patient and his family as a
caregiver. I received praise from other healthcare members, and the patient’s family was
convinced to put him in the care facility for his best interest.

• Time spent in volunteering work throughout the nursing course has increased my
behavioural nursing skills, refined my cognitive prowess and sharpened my capacity to
mould my abilities depending on the circumstances. Engaging in care provision for the

as an individual. I was ranked highly as a proficient volunteer nursing student in the
