INTRODUCTION
Person-Centred Care (PCC)are the units where patients are centred and adequate care is
being provided to them (Håkansson Eklund and et.al., 2019). These are important element in the
healthcare sector. In order to avail adequate and appropriate treatment to patients registered
nurses plays an important role. In addition, of having a compliance with various standards of
nursing they perform their work in the form of assessing the patients along with maintaining and
supporting emotional balance. Registered nurse are the key supporter and main element in the
field of healthcare centre. The main purpose of this essay is to clarify the concept of PCC along
with determining the role that registered nurses play in treating the patient. This whole essay is
designed in the context of Mr Vincent who has COPD disease and a detailed medical history
regarding rubella and pertussis from childhood. Mr Vincent is also facing a problem of cough
and respiratory secretions. Along with taking care of patient and role of nurse various standards
of nursing including Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Registered Nurses Standard for
Practice (NMBA RN) and National Safety and Quality Health Services (NSQHS) are also being
discussed in this essay.
MAIN BODY
Mr Vincent is a 70-year-old man who is suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
Disease (COPD) from the last two years. Due to COPD Mr Vincent is facing the problem of
cough, short breath and respiratory secretion. As per the medical history of Mr Vincent, he has
suffered from rubella and pertussis during the childhood time. Mr Vincent has also a medical
history of pneumonia in the last two years. Despite necessity of home oxygen therapy, Mr
Vincent has not left the habit of smoking cigarettes. Mr Vincent is the only caretaker of his wife
who is having a problem of metastatic breast cancer. Overall the condition of Mr Vincent is
generally unwell.
Person centred care:
It refers to caring the patient with full dignity and respect (Santana and et.al., 2018).
Under PCC, patients are treated for their diseases along with maintaining of dignity and respect.
Patients are also involved in every decision that are being taken concerning their health (Santana
and et.al., 2018).

Along with taking care of patients certain principles are also being followed under PPC
that may includes enabling high quality of healthcare services, providing co-ordinated
personalized care with treatment and delivering adequate education and knowledge regarding the
diseases to patients along with an involvement of family and friends (Burton, 2018). In addition
of this, emotional support is also being provided to patients in case of fear and anxiety. As per
the principles of PCC the service users are also encouraged to be independent so by realising
them their strength.
Role of registered nurse:
Registered nurses plays an important role in taking care of patients right from treating the
diseases, supporting them emotionally and mentally so that they can recover from their diseases
and lead a healthy life. This means that registered nurses along with fulfilling their duties in the
form of providing treatment to patients, also support them emotionally so that better recovery of
the patient is being made possible. Registered nurses also make co-ordination with various
associated individuals including family of patients, concerning doctors, health and social care
units if the patients is having an association with them and various other. The registered nurse
should take care of the patients along with providing the best treatment and advice (Lunden and
et.al., 2017). They keep keen observance over the symptoms of patients along with enabling
communicating with physicians so that most appropriate treatment would be able to deliver.
They make high collaboration with concerning physicians so that personalized care plan for the
patient will be formulated and executed. Registered nurses also plays an important role in terms
of administrating the treatment and medication of patient along with recording the health
condition. They also assist in medical examination along with operating medical equipment for
the betterment of the health of the patients. Next to the doctor they have major role in assisting
the patients and their health. As Mr Vincent is suffering from COPD with a very bad health
condition so by implying the role of registered nurse Mr Vincent can move towards the direction
of recovering health.
A registered nurse always work as per NMBA and its RN standards. As per these
standards Nurses always follow all the seven standards of MNBA RN which includes: Standard
1, nurses thinks critically and analyse nursing practice, Standard 2, engagement in therapeutic
and professional relationship, Standard 3, Maintenance of capability of practice, Standard 4,
Comprehensively conduct all assessments, Standard 5, Developing plan for nursing practice,

Standard 6, Provide safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice, Standard 7,
Evaluate outcomes to inform nursing practice (Registered nurse standards for practice, 2021). In
addition, of complying these standards registered nurse also follow various codes and standard
that are related to NSQHS. The standards of NSQHS generally comprised of Clinical
Governance Standard, Partnering with Consumers Standards, Preventing and Controlling
Healthcare associated Infection Standards, Medication Safety Standards, Comprehensive care
Standards and various other concerning standards (The NSQHS Standards, 2019). This means
that along with meeting the duties, registered nurse always take care of these standards while
performing and executing the roles. This means that while taking care of patient, a registered
nurse always adopts the most appropriate, safe and responsive nursing practice in order to deal
with the disease of the patient and compliance with the Standard 6 of MNBA RN. Likewise,
before initiating and giving treatment registered nurses always make appropriate plan (Standard-
5) along with making evaluation of outcomes related to disease and if the outcome is not positive
then taking adequate steps (Standard- 7). Thus registered nurses plays crucial role in terms of
compliance of standards along with meeting their duties (Ossenberg, Mitchell and Henderson,
2020).
In the given scenario of Mr Vincent whose condition in not well due to COPD, a
registered nurse plays an important role in terms of treating Mr Vincent with regard to their
physical health along with enabling emotional support so that they will not loose hope regarding
their recovery. Since, Mr Vincent has this problem from the last two-year along with a medical
history of pneumonia. So in this case registered nurse plays an important role in terms of
complying with Standard- 5 in terms of developing an appropriate plan for the treatment of Mr
Vincent where every possible aspect of health related to Mr Vincent will be focussed. Here in
addition of compliance with Standard- 5 of MNBA RN a registered nurse will also comply
communicating for safety standard of NSQHS where nurse will communicate every information
regarding the medical history of Mr Vincent to the concerned physician so that the best treatment
would be able to avail to Mr Vincent. Here, a registered nurse will not only make communication
with doctor but at the same time they will also establish communication with Mr Vincent and his
family so that adequate knowledge and education regarding the stage of disease and its planned
treatment would being aware by them. As English is the second language of Mr Vincent so in
order to make communication a registered nurse may either observe facial expression or gesture

of Mr Vincent that whether they are able to understand the language of communication or not.
Thus, as per the observance of Mr Vincent a registered nurse should decide the language and
mode of communication.
Since, Mr Vincent is suffering from COPD which is one of the chronic disease and not
easy to be recovered but in this case, a registered nurse will play a crucial role in terms of
minimizing the impact and controlling the symptoms (Portillo and et.al., 2018). This will help
Mr Vincent in terms of living a good and healthy life. In addition, of COPD, Mr Vincent is also
suffering from its severe impacts in the form of shortness of breath, cough and respiratory
secretions so in this a registered nurse can help him in the form of educating the exercise of
pulmonary rehabilitation which is one of the best breathing exercise that improve the exercise
capacity along with raising the quality of life. In order to execute this a registered nurse initiate
practice session so that Mr Vincent can learn the exercises. This practice of nurse will prove to
be very helpful for Mr Vincent in order to minimize the impact of respiratory issues. Registered
nurse by implying the NMBA and its RN standards also perform its role so that the physical
health of the Mr Vincent will move to recovery. Also, it will lead to raise the mental and
emotional health too because through implication of these standards emotional and mental
support is also provided,.
As, Mr Vincent is on oxygen therapy but continuously consuming cigarettes so here the
role of registered nurse will become critical. This means that a nurse has to be cautions regarding
the safety issue concerning the oxygen therapy (Tan and et.al., 2021). As this therapy is having a
major risk of burn and fire along with falls and trips so if the nurse will be cautious then that Mr
Vincent will not have to face the side effects of this therapy.
In addition, of this as Mr Vincent has a smoking habit which is not good at all in case of
COPD. So here a registered nurse along with compliance of Standard-4 of substandard- 4.3
regarding NMBA RN can help Mr Vincent in terms of creating awareness about the bad impact
of smoking towards their health (Registered nurse standards for practice, 2021)). Along with
that this is also covered under the compliance of standard of partnering with consumers standards
of NSQHS whereby making partnering with Mr Vincent, registered nurse will educate him about
the current disease and the precautionary move in the form of avoidance of smoking will also be
delivered. A registered nurse can also promote smoking cessation practice by offering adequate
treatment. Likewise, a nurse can also follow the practice of ask, aware and act policy whereby in

the beginning they can ask the Mr Vincent regarding the habit followed by generating awareness.
But in case if it is not being implemented then action taking step in the form of availing
treatment can also work best.
Likewise, as Mr Vincent apart from keeping the physical health condition is keen to go to
his home because he is the sole caretaker of his wife who was suffering from metastatic breast
cancer. So in this case, the role of registered nurse become crucial and important. The nurse will
also deliver its service in the form of supporting Mr Vincent emotionally by explaining and
realizing that the curing of COPD is also very important as the current situation is signing well.
Thus, along with executing physical treatment regarding the issue of COPD of Mr Vincent, a
registered nurse has a similar important role with regard to providing mental and emotional
support.
As the condition of Mr Vincent in terms of physical health is not good because along
with previous history of pneumonia Mr Vincent is facing respiratory issue too due to COPD.
Along with that Mr Vincent has a medical issues right from the childhood and currently suffering
from COPD. Since, mental health or condition is also very important which lead the patient to be
relaxed in order to get speedy recovery so a registered nurse can play an important role in terms
of integrity (Weldam and et.al., 2017). This means that supporting Mr Vincent in terms of his
value of life and not losing hopes. As mental peace and health also plays a major role in the
recovery of patients, specially those who have a history of long term illness. This may sometime
lead to the emergence of some other diseases in the form of anxiety or depression. Thus, a
registered nurse plays a significant role in terms of enabling healthcare support to Mr Vincent.
Here a registered nurse also plays a role in the form of delivering and giving a cognitive
behavioural therapy (Monsees and et.al., 2019). This would help Mr Vincent in terms of
recovering from mental trauma and the condition of mental depression and anxiety situation.
Thus, it would be right to say that in case of Mr Vincent, the role of registered nurse is very
crucial and major in terms of recovering from the critical condition of COPD along with helping
them by providing mental and emotional support.

CONCLUSION
From the above essay it is concluded that in order to avail the best possible treatment to
patients in terms of treating the diseases or getting emotional support along with maintenance of
health with dignity and respect person centred care plays an important role. It is also understood
from the essay that a registered nurse is the key element of healthcare system where patients are
being treated. Since, nurse not only plays an important role in terms of treating the physical
health of an individual, but they act as a supporter of mental balance. This means that along with
providing physical support, a registered nurse also inculcates the role in the form of delivering
emotional and mental support. This essay also delivers the concept of various standards of
nursing and its important role in the performance of work related to registered nurse. Since, these
standards are the guide which support the working of nurse so it would be summarized from the
entire essay that the role of nurse in terms of compliance of nursing standards is very important
in the field of healthcare and patient centred cares. Also, as this essay is written in the context of
Mr Vincent who is suffering from COPD wherein they loose all hopes regarding their life. Under
such situation a registered nurse perform its significant role in terms of enabling best treatment
so that Mr Vincent will start recovery. Along with recovery, registered nurse by compiling the
NMBA standards also support Mr Vincent emotionally so that speedy recovery would be
possible. As Mr Vincent has different language so by observing the gesture and body language a
nurse can make communication with them and their family.
