AI Summary
This case study analyzes the concept of regulatory capture, focusing on a situation where an individual, Dr. Robin Batterham, holds dual roles in both a government position as a chief scientist and a data technologist role at a mining company, Rio Tinto. The analysis explores the conflicts of interest that arise from this situation, particularly concerning the potential for reduced public faith and mismanagement of responsibilities. The study applies the regulatory capture theory, social responsibility, and sustainability theories to assess the situation and determine how the senate committee should resolve the issue. The report concludes that the dual roles create conflicts, and the committee's decision for Dr. Batterham to prioritize his government position is supported by the theories and the need to protect the public interest.
