QUALITY OF LIFE DEPENDS ON QUALITY OF RELATIONSHIPS
People lead a satisfactory life when they behave nicely with some and rudely with others
but they lead a grand life when they behave exceptionally well with everyone. In this essay, I
would agree with the statement that the quality of our lives depend on the quality of our
relationships. The main argument that I put forward is that the problem with civility could be
solved if we value our relationships with other.
With the growing effect of technology on our lives, we have become personally isolated
although we are more connected socially than ever. The presence of social media has made our
lives easier as we could connect to people across the globe without moving an inch. However, as
we have glued ourselves to the social media, we have isolated ourselves from people around us
in our real lives. I am pointing to this fact because with increasing access to meet new people, we
are supposed to adapt to every culture and situation. We have become cooler and begun to
question the orthodox and rigid cultural norms. Despite that, we are still not respecting every
culture and every people. in the recent times, news about racist attacks, hate crimes and crime
based on religion have seen a rise. This is not a good sign for a society that is trying to establish
an environment of just and equality.
The relationships in life matter a lot for us whether we are at home, at work or at any
public or private space. The way we behave with others reflects the way we are treated or have
been treated by others while we grew up. When we are treated well from childhood, we
incorporate those attributes in our personality, which is reflected in the way we treat others or
behave with others. Maintaining a good relationship not only helps in business or job but also
helps in our overall lives. However, as we could see in the modern society, we tend to behave
well with those who are of some benefit to us. In business, we find that companies behave well
with their stakeholders just to earn profit. Government officials behave well with the public

when they want to win elections. In situations where there is no negotiation, people rarely
behave well with others in non-negotiating situations because they know this is not going to
benefit them in any way. However, it has been seen so many times that when respect people
without any intention of profit or motive, we receive the same from them. This allows people
around us to live in peace and comfort and the same happens to us.
I believe that it is fine to follow any culture, ideology, religion or party unless we are
doing kind to every people even if the people are completely opposite to us. One of the best
examples of having a great life by spreading kindness and doing well to others could be found in
people who have lived in the past. Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and such people have had a
fulfilling life although they had to struggle greatly because they did kind to others. These
respected even today, years after their demise because of the good deeds they did. They had
established good relationships with people and that is what improved their quality of life. Good
relationships help us have a calm mind and heart, which is very important in leading a peaceful
life allowing ourselves to concentrate on improving it.
A simple example of why the quality of our lives depends on the quality of relationships
could be found in the daily work that we do. We wake up in the morning and prepare to go to our
respective works. When we disrespect someone at home out of anger or during our way to work,
it attracts negativity. We become distracted and struggle to concentrate on our work. It affects
our overall satisfaction of life. We fail to achieve our goals and end up being disappointed. We
develop a critical attitude towards every aspect of life and the quality of life deteriorates. This is
just one small example that shows the importance of respecting every individual to have a better
life. Several other instances are there in life where civility works magically for us in
experiencing an amazing life. Therefore, I would reiterate that the quality of our lives depends on

the quality of our relationships. The relationships could be in the real world and the virtual world
as well.
