INTRODUCTION
Academic skills are defined as different skills like writing, presentation and referencing
skills. There are some complex skills also which include: critical thinking, managing
information, understanding assessment etc. (Correll, Rubio and Kane, 2018). Academic skills
encourage students to learn more new things and enhance their knowledge. Academic skills
helps in improving confidence of students. It helps in encouraging students to participate more in
the activities. In this report concept of personal and professional development are discussed.
Describe and discuss value of short term goals, medium term goals and long term goals. Further,
discussion on personal development plan has been done and also identify the goals.
MAIN BODY
Personal and Professional development
Personal and professional development is described as the process of learning through which
company can achieve its goal. Personal development helps in improving skills and learning new
skills. It helps in improving social status of the company. It helps in development of strengths
(Johnso and Marlow,2017.). Personal development performs different roles like, of teacher,
mentor, guide etc. Personal development is a long process which helps an organization to make
plans for future and provides a clear vision as where the company will be in next few years. It
helps in making proper plans and clear ideas that what is the goal of the company and ways to
achieve those goals. Personal development helps in identifying hidden talent. It helps in
improving effectiveness. Personal development is an essential element which will give benefit in
the future.
There are some main areas of personal development:
Mental: First area of personal development is to develop your mind by improving your
thinking capacity. For development skills read books which will help in enhancing skills.
Social: In this focus is on improving communication skills and learning new languages.
Spiritual: This describes activities like time spend in prayer and meditation.
Emotional: It includes about mood and how to talk to a friend etc.

Professional development refers to the tools and training sessions which will help in
improving effectiveness. There are various approaches of professional development like,
coaching, mentoring, supervision, case study etc. In case study method, students are given a case
and they have to take decisions regarding the problem faced in the case. Professional
development provides training to teachers which help in making better plans. This helps teachers
in learning new ways of teaching the students (Juodeikis and Brimas, 2017.).
Personal and professional development both are important for the development of an
organization. Personal development includes how to improve communication skills and how to
manage time properly so that organizational goals can be achieved. It also focuses on how to
improve knowledge and potentials. Professional development focuses on entirely developing
your role and what improvements are required. Its focus is on improving necessary skills that are
requires at the workplace. Professional and personal development helps in strengthening skills in
new and different areas.
Value of Short term goals
Short term goals refers to something which is to be achieved in short period of time. Short period
like in the next week, in next month, in 15 to 20 days. A short term goal can be achieved within a
year or in less time. Short term goals defines that what are goals that are to be achieved in short
period of time.
Short term goals are important because:
Helps in creating effective strategies: Short term goals helps in achieving long term goals
easily. Short term goals helps in making effective strategies which will be helpful in
achieving long term goals.
Quick feedback: Short term goals provides quick feedback as time limit of short term
goal is fixed that this goal should be achieved within this time period. Feedback can be
negative or positive but it provides motivation for next time (Marks and et.al., 2017.).
Short term goals provide quick response and helps in making improvements so that goals
can be achieved.
Short term goals helps in achieving goals with a clear vision. Short term goals helps in deciding
the path for long term goals. Short term goals can be attained within a year and it helps in
motivating itself. Short term goals are easy and simple to achieve. Short term goals help in

boosting confidence. If short term goal is not achieved then new short term goal should be
prepared. Plans should be made properly. It provides quick results and also measures progress,
which helps in improving performance next time and make better short term plans so that goals
can be achieved.
Short term goals can be of any type like, improving skills, make morning schedule, plan for a
picnic etc. There are different types of short term goals: career, financial, academic and health
short term goals. All these short term goals play an important role in life.
My short-term goals which I want to achieve in a month are:
I want to improve my personality.
I want to make a proper time table for my daily activities.
Everyday I want to learn a new thing related to my work.
Value of medium term goals
Medium term goals are goals which are achieved between two months to three years. Medium
term goals happens after education is completed. Medium term goals are basically come between
short term and long term goals. Everyone has some short term,medium term and long term goals
which they want to be achieve (Rice and et.al., 2017). If short term goals are not achieved then it
can be achieved by making medium term goals. Mistakes which were done while making short
term plans should not be repeated. While making medium term goals, be focus on what is the
goal that should be accomplished. Medium term goals helps in motivating a person day to day
activities. It helps in taking necessary steps which will lead to success. Medium term goals helps
in measuring performance. In medium term goals quick feedback is not received as it requires
time for planning. Medium term goals should be check daily, if any improvement is required.
Medium term goals focuses on changes in the environment. Sometimes, environmental factors
may affect medium term goals and they cannot be achieved.
Medium term goals depend on environmental factors. Environmental factors include
economical changes, technological changes,social changes etc. These factors sometimes affect
medium term goals. While making plans, solution for these environment factors should also be
prepared (Stafford-Smith and et.al.,2017.). If solution is prepared then medium term goals will
not be affected. Planning should be perfect so that goals can be accomplished and next goal can
be set. Sometimes medium term goals take much time. Medium term goals are set after

graduation, doing a job or searching for the job. Everyone has different medium term goals but
there are very few who achieve those goals. The reason why others lack in achieving the goal
may be they did not make proper plans.
My medium term goals are:
I want to go on a trip with my family.
I want government job.
I want to enhance my knowledge.
Value of long term goals
Long term goals are defined as something which is to be achieved in the future, goals are not
achieved in a year. It takes few years to achieve long term goals. It requires a lot of planning and
also requires time to accomplish the goals. Long term goals require planning on daily basis and
make some changes that what can be better ways to achieve the set goals (Heuberer and et.al.,
2017). Long term goals helps in properly shaping directions to achieve the goal. They focus
achieving the goals. Its main objective is to do hard work and focus on how to accomplish the
goal. Long term goals are normally related to career, like want to get a master’s degree or want
to complete graduation. Long term goals are the goals which are to be achieved in the future but
planning should be done at present. If long term goals are achieved then it gives happiness.
Advantage of long term goal is that it provides directions. It helps in providing correct directions
to achieve the goal. Long term goals helps in finding the problems which will come in the way
like roadblocks (Shindell and et.al., 2017). It ill help in understanding those problems and find
solutions. If long term goals are achieved then it builds positive impact and boosts confidence for
the future. When planning for long term goal, keep in mind that they are SMART i.e., 's' for
specific, 'm' for measurable, 'a' for attainable, 'r' for realistic and 't' for time.
Benefits of long term goals are: life will become exciting as their will be some passion for
achieving long term goals. It will be helpful in decision-making. Decisions are to be taken at
every point. So, it will help in making decisions easily. Setting long term goals helps in
analysing strengths and weaknesses and also help in improving skills. It helps in identifying
barriers that can affect while achieving long term goals. When long term goals are achieved then
everyone enjoys and have satisfaction. Long term goals helps to think something creative and
different from others.
