Purpose statement:
In the contemporary times, the rate of school absenteeism and dropout is rapidly
increasing. These are associated with severe life-course problems, which must be mitigated in
order to promote mental wellbeing among the students. The rate of this issue is extremely
high among people, who are highly vulnerable towards risky behaviour (Gubbels, van der Put
& Assink, 2019). Homelessness, poverty and emotional distress are increasing the rate of
school absenteeism and drop out. It is important for the researcher to figure out the factors
that are contributing a lot in the way of increasing the rate of school absenteeism and dropout.
There lies the significance of this research as it will help in identifying the factors that are
causing the children to absent the school.
Researchers are showing that problematic school absenteeism is associated with wide
ranges of factors such as sexual behaviour, teenage pregnancy, psychiatric disorders,
externalizing behaviour, delinquency, and the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other
substances. The tendency towards absenting school is a major barrier towards child
development. In future, this can lead to major problems like economic deprivation, mental,
marital and occupational problem (Keegan & Gable, 2016). This research will help in
understanding the impact of ever increasing rate of school absenteeism on child development.
Research question:
Fundamental questions of this research are as follows:
What is the current state of school absenteeism and dropout?
What are the factors, causing children to absent school?
What are the possible consequences of school absenteeism and dropout?
