RESEARCH PROPOSAL: BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT IN CLASSROOM
Introduction
The primary purpose of the following research paper is to discuss the behavior
management in the classrooms and what strategies can help the teachers to overcome the
negative behavior from the classrooms. In the modern day scenario, even with the best and the
most talented teachers, and during the lessons or classes, there are incidents of unproductive
behavior which not only distracts them but also the students who try to concentrate upon their
subjects. This brings to the most important issue which is managing the classrooms. maintaining
a positive environment in the classrooms and eliminating the inappropriate behavior is the main
problem that the teachers face. It is very important for the educators of this generation, to not
only come properly prepared with their lessons, but also know, how to treat the students and
make them behave in an appropriate manner (Wellington, 2015). Thus the main thesis statement
that this research paper aims to argue is that effective behavior management in the classrooms is
possible only if the primary or the secondary teachers work towards it and enhance the learning
procedures in the classrooms. The research proposal has thus provided a comprehensive detail
about how this research will be done, using the secondary data collection technique and using the
descriptive research design.
Research problem
It has already been discussed in the introductory paragraph that the most important
problem in today’s time for the teachers is not knowing how to teach but knowing the basic
strategies that would help them to maintain the classroom behavior. Misbehavior from the end of
the students is one of the greatest problem that disrupts the classroom ambience and distracts the

other students. Thus the main objective of the paper is to find out that whether the different
strategies can help the teachers to eliminate the unproductive classroom behavior. The research
also further aims to find out what effective strategies can help the educators do so.
Research significance
The choice of the topic in the following research paper will help me to find out the
validity of the topic. It would also help the teaching professional know how to engage with the
students personally and in the best possible manner. Organized classroom would aid in effective
teaching process and the most important significance of this research proposal is that it would
make me a better person in dealing with the students. Also the significance of this chosen
research is that it would enable the students and the teachers to contribute more to the education
and develop themselves academically as well as professionally.
Literature Review
According to Aljohani (2016), a classroom is the most important and fundamental unit of
the institution called school which should be providing an appropriate environment for the
conduction of any sort of educational activity. There should be convenient ambience that would
help not only the teachers to impart knowledge, but also the students to develop academically.
As per the discussion of Pas, et.al. (2015), the concept of behavior management in the
classrooms, is embedded in the system of classroom management which is done by the educators
or the teaching professionals. This implies the presence of a system which support positive
environment in the classroom premises. Flower, McKenna & Haring (2017) suggests that
behavior management is the eradication of the unproductive behavior from the classroom that

creates a sense of negativity and prevents the students from performing well in their academics.
Also according to Wellington (2015), every classroom contains of students who have different
learning abilities and who have different needs, with respect to the socio- cultural context. A
classroom requires an effective and strict control since there are mixed students, coming from
various backgrounds. Ritz, et.al. (2014) in this scenario thus suggests that it is the responsibility
of the teachers to maintain a classroom with managed children’s behavior.
According to Nolan, et.al. (2014), there are several reasons behind the misconduct or the
unproductive behavior on the part of the students. Often they can be the environment of the
school or external factors. The content of the curriculum or the lesson can make the students
tired and they can often behave differently since they do not find it interesting. Malinen &
Savolainen (2016) discusses that there is a direct relationship between the academic performance
of the students and their misbehavior. The students who do not perform well in the class, suffer
from low confidence and self – esteem which is also one of the greatest reason for them to
behave in a wrong manner since they are not even concerned about their improvement. Moreover
Reinke, et.al. (2014) argues that there can be several other external factors such as the family
background, lack of familial care, or even the lack of proper authority at home can result in the
increasing misconduct in the classroom. In this context, Akin, Yıldırım & Goodwin (2016) also
states that there can be other factors such as lingual, cultural or even poverty.
As per the discussion of Sieberer – Nagler (2016), the most important theories that are
important to study behavior management of the classrooms include the Skinner;s behaviorist and
Lee Canter’s Assertive discipline models. Both of these theories if incorporated into the
classroom and under the discretion of the education professionals, can help the researchers to
understand the concept of behavior management (Ritz, et.al., 2014). As per the argument of

(Pas,e t.al., 2015), the punishment strategy is not an important mode through which the teachers
can have a positive classroom. Flower, McKenna & Haring (2014) also says that this strategy
influences the classroom misconduct and the students tend to behave in the most unruly manner
if they are punished for their activities. However, as per the discussion of Skinner and other
scholars, punishments are necessary and can be used in cases which are necessary. This strategy
of punishment has been recommended to the teachers only if there is a failure in the positive
approaches and in the general behavior models. Aljohani (2016) in this scenario talks of the
behavior management model which influences the teachers to implement the standard norms of
behavior in the classrooms. The Assertive Discipline model of Canter had been developed in the
1970s., depending on the Skinner’s Behavior modification model. Wellington (2015) suggests in
respect to these models that a teacher needs to implement the explicit instructions in the
classrooms and enforce them for the betterment of both the students as well as the classroom
ambience. The concept of maintaining the classroom behavior and management of the same does
not only need effective strategies and implementation of the same. But a large amount of it
depends on the personal belief of the educators that they possess the ability to control a class and
manage the same Domitrovich (2016). There needs to be effective study of the principles of
classroom behavior management through which the teachers can maintain proper relation and
connection with their pupils (Eisenman, Edwards & Cushman, 2015).
Research question/ Hypothesis
The following research paper aims to develop upon the following hypothesis
H0- Through different strategies and actions, the teachers in the schools cannot manage the
unproductive behaviors of the children in classroom

RESEARCH PROPOSAL: BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT IN CLASSROOM
H1- Through different strategies and actions, the teachers in the schools can manage the
unproductive behaviors of the children in classroom.
There have been two question s that have been formulated keeping in mind the aims and
the objectives of the research paper.
a. Can skills and strategies be used by the teachers to eliminate the unproductive behavior in
the classroom?
b. What strategies can be implemented to maintain the classroom behavior?
Research Design/Methodology
Research methodology is very important for a research, since it helps in its
developmental process. The following research topic has made use of the qualitative research
methodology which has helped the author evaluate the necessary objectives and answer to the
research question using the secondary data sources (O’Brennan, Bradshaw & Furlong, 2014).
For this particular research, the researcher will make use of the descriptive research design
because it will help the research to gain a detailed analysis of the various concepts and the
theories of classroom behavior management.
Data Collection methods
The data collection method that has been used to complete the research is qualitative
data collection technique. It has taken the help of the secondary data sources which include the
theories, the models, journals, books and news articles. The secondary sources will help the
research gain insight from the pre researched theories. The explanation of the research topic will
become easier using the qualitative research methodology (Farmer, Reinke & Brooks, 2014).

Limitations of the Research
The research that has been conducted did contain several limitations that prevented my
research to conclude the best findings. It might have happened that the secondary resources that
have been used, the journals, models, theories or the books did not reach the required goals. They
were not sufficient enough because the entire research had been based on the secondary data
collection methods and not the primary source. Moreover, there could also have been a
possibility that all the important resources were not available, which were required for the
discussion of the topic. Moreover constraint of time had been the greatest limitations which
prevented the primary data collection method. had there been enough time, with a proper time
managed schedule, the research could have been successful.
Findings
From the above analysis , it has been found that the teachers or the educators in the
classroom are the ones who can actually manage the classroom behavior since they are the ones
who constantly monitor the students. A child spends most of their time in the school. With the
help of few strategies and steps, the teachers and the education professionals can manage the
classroom atmosphere and make the students behave properly. Eliminating the unproductive
behavior from the classroom is to build a good relationship with the students. Only if the
students feel safe with their teachers, they would be motivated to behave properly in their
presence and as a result of this, there would show better engagement in their academic studies. In
accordance with this, another important thing is instilling proper learning skills and discipline in
the students. These skills if imbibed in then during their early learning days, they would grow up
to be better disciplined persons in their adult life.

Key recommendations
From the above research, there can be few recommendations for the teachers, so that they
can eliminate the unproductive class behavior. the teacher can make the lessons more interesting
with the use of different videos, graphics and movies. The proper use of technology would keep
the students engaged and they would find their curriculum interesting. The students can also be
encouraged to get involved in various activities that could bring out the best in them, giving them
the opportunity to excavate their talents (Farmer, Reinke & Brooks, 2014).. This could help the
teacher build a positive atmosphere in the classroom and also eliminate the unproductive
behavior. Another recommendation si that the teachers should pay attention to the voice and the
arguments of their pupils. Their problems need to be addressed with the utmost maturity. If the
teacher finds that there is some serious issue with the student and that there are external factors
that prevent him or her to maintain the classroom decorum, then the teacher should be taking
steps to talk to the principal, referring the student to a councilor (Friedman-Krauss, et.al., 2014).
In accordance with all this, the teacher should improve the interpersonal connections with her
students with the help of humor strategies. According to Eisenman, Edwards & Cushman
(2015), humor has been proved to be an effective strategy in maintaining the classroom behavior.
Conclusion:
Thus from the above research proposal it can be concluded that the teachers have the
ability to control and manage the unproductive classroom behavior only with the help fo specific
skills and strategies. They need to maintain proper bonding with the students and should try to
take steps that would help in eradicating the same behavior. With the help of descriptive research
design, qualitative data collection methods and secondary data resoiurces, theories and models of
