Essay
AI Summary
This essay examines the application of quantitative research design in nursing, focusing on its characteristics and contrasting it with qualitative research. The solution highlights the use of numerical data and statistical analysis to establish cause-and-effect relationships, referencing a study on alarm customization in intensive care units. It also discusses the differences between quantitative and qualitative research, emphasizing the importance of measurement versus understanding experiences. Furthermore, the essay provides an example of a qualitative study relevant to nursing practice, concerning the challenges in implementing elective single embryo transfer. Desklib offers a range of solved assignments and study tools for students.

The design of the article is quantitative research. The article aims to explain a cause-and-
effect relationship between staff educational program on customization of alarm settings on
bedside monitors and the number of alarms in a medical intensive care unit. The article uses
numbers to measure study variables including the daily number of events of low Spo2 alarm per
patient during the fifteen days. It also involves monitoring other physiological parameters of
patients such as the ECG rhythm, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. Several factors such as the
theory testing, objectivity, and phenomenal description are needed to make the research article
this design (James, 2016).
Qualitative and quantitative research designs differ in several ways. For instance,
quantitative research emphasizes measurement while qualitative research emphasizes
understanding experiences of a population. Qualitative research uses sensory methods like
observations and listening to collect and group information into themes. Quantitative research
uses numbers in measuring variables including concepts and characteristics. While qualitative
research is exploratory, quantitative research quantifies the problem through the generation of
numerical data for use in formulating facts and uncovering research patterns. Qualitative
research explores the underlying motivations, opinions, and reasons (Marcellus, 2006).
Researchers use qualitative research among smaller populations in comparison to
quantitative research. Qualitative research helps determine specific views and opinions of
respondents in cases where their experiences and attitudes towards certain phenomena are
required. However, quantitative research helps to ascertain the proportion of the population
holding certain attitudes and experiences towards the phenomena (James, 2016). An example of
a qualitative study relevant to my area of practice is research to discover potential challenges in
the implementation of a proposed trial of elective transfer of single embryo. The research

question would be how the health professionals and counselors of Assisted Reproductive
Technology (ART) interpret and practice the welfare principle (Kristoffersen & Friberg, 2018).
