I have decided to complete my higher studies on Social work, as I love exploring
critical issues and challenges. In this subject I will get to explore many new things and face
tough situations. It is a very demanding profession but at the same time, it is highly
rewarding. It is often in the spotlight of the public. My chosen universities are University of
Gloucestershire and University of the West of England, at Bristol. Studying the subject will
help me prepare for safeguarding the interests of children and adults who are vulnerable. It
will promote independence and I will be able to practice as qualified practitioner, along with
all the skills, in order to deal with the most suppressed social issues, in the modern days.
The course basically focuses on the skills in order to practice the contemporary issues
of social work. After completing the course, I will be eligible for registering as Social Worker
at England along with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). I will gain a deep
knowledge, experiences, skills and critical understanding on making informed judgments
especially in the complex situations. I will be able to work with the service users,
professionals and others for the enhancement of wellbeing1. In this course, I will be educated
by enthusiastic and experienced staffs of the Universities, as majority of them are registered
and qualified social workers. The staffs of the Universities maintain an active link with the
practitioners and partner agencies. Being a qualified and registered social worker, I will be
capable of working with the adults as well as children across all the sectors and in various
roles. The Universities also provide the students with placements2.
The entry requirement for University of the West of England is, the students need to
have knowledge on the subjects like; sociology, law, psychology and other social science
subjects. The students must have minimum of two A levels in general studies and social
sciences which will be included in overall tariff. For University of Gloucestershire, the

students need to have 104 tariff points. Matured students are given more preference. Students
of both the Universities are highly social; they make new friends and also engage themselves
in several extracurricular activities. They are happy with the huge range of opportunities they
have. The academic staffs are highly praised and support the students with every possible
ways. A student mentioned that so far the journey has been very good. Becoming
independent and making good new friends have been her top highlights. The course has also
given her life experiences and that will allow her to become successful in the future3.
The University of Gloucestershire provides the students with huge range of financial
support which include packages like; Care Leavers Scholarship, Partnership Bursary, Music
Scholarship, Financial Assistance Fund, Emergency short term loans, Sports excellence
Funds and PGCE bursaries. In addition to that the University also offers sports scholarships
which are supported by, Football Association, English Cricket Board, Rugby Football Union
and the England Netball. The University of the West of England also provides a huge range
of scholarships and funding like; UWE Learner support Fund, emergency fund, summer fund,
short term loan schemes, placement costs loan, tuition fee, debt remission, facilities for
disabled students, UWE bursary and many more4.
The information is highly helpful and on the basis of the students’ feedback, I can say
that the Universities’ environment is very good and friendly. This will help me concentrate
on my course. The staff members are extremely helpful and cooperative. Therefore, the
information has helped me a lot while making the application.
