“What are the help-seeking barriers faced by young black minority ethnics aged 16-25
experiencing mental health issues in UK?”
INTRODUCTION
Mental health issues are emotional, cognitive and behavioural disorder which affects
thinking and behaving activity of individuals. Mental health issues affects ability of individual to
think and make affects living style of individual. Mental illness not only affects individual but it
also affects people surrounding them. They are not able to work on their own. So they require
help of some people which assist them in performing their work. This research is based on issues
which is faced by black minority ethnics suffering from mental health issues (Stone and et. al.,
2015).
Black minority ethnics is the term which is used in UK for people who have non White
descent and discriminated on the basis of it. In UK, there is difference among people on the basis
of caste colour creed, etc. Minority People discriminated on the basis of their race are
characterised under five sections- unequal rights and improper distribution of power to lives,
physical and cultural traits, involuntary membership in team, high rate of in- group marriage,
awareness of subordination.
This creates a gap between people residing in society. It is important to provide proper
facilities to mentally disable people, so they can perform their activities in better and effective
manner. In UK, there is difference in providing facilities to black people facing mental health
issues. So this creates issues in their working style and they are not satisfied with their
supporting services.
BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE FOR THE STUDY
Background of research
Black ethnicity is the issue which is prevalent in UK due to which there is imbalance in
society. It makes it easy to understand different aspects which are pre- relevant in industry. This
creates an issue in society because there is no proper services to victim. This proposal based on
health seeking barriers for minority black ethnics due to mental issues (Sabik, 2015). There is
difference in services offered to black people residing in UK, so difference arise in services
offered to them. Black people face issue regarding studies, availing facilities, job opportunities,

etc. This creates gap in mind of white people through which equality for black minority ethnics
can not arise. Mental health issues does not results in individuals are not able to work their own.
They may get harm themselves or people near by them. So in this case they require some health
seeking benefits through which they can perform their operations in better and effective manner.
In this proposal, there is discussion about problem arise because of health issues in their
mental imbalance. In order to make clear understanding about it, proposal focus on issues faced
by young black minority ethnics for dealing with their mental health issues. For youngsters, there
are different open streams which make them capable to live good life. But for individuals facing
mental issues, they are not able to perform operations smoothly. So they require help, but in UK
people from minority and black ethnics does not get proper services because of their caste,
colour, creed, etc. Hence in this research, there is discussion about problems which arise to
individuals aged 16-25 suffering from mental health issues (Rade and et. al., 2018).
Rationale of research
With this proposal it is easy for individuals to understand about concept of black minority
and ethnics in UK. This makes reader to get knowledge about gap in society because of caste,
colour, creed, etc. Mentally disable people requires helps to conduct their activities in
appropriate manner. This makes clear understanding about ways through which they perform
their operations. Young people has more opportunities of growth, so awareness among people
can be created with this proposal and possibilities are bright that their condition might get
improved.
This proposal makes clear about health issues which arise among people and they are not
able to perform their routine activities. Investigator has interest in exploring knowledge about
ways through which condition of mental retarded people can be improved. They collect
information from different authentic sources which makes investigation reliable in context to use
for future purpose. Reader enhance knowledge about issues due to which there is gap between
services to white people and black people in society. If similar research is allotted to researcher,
then they are able to conduct in appropriate manner because they have basic knowledge about
research tools and techniques (Posselt and et. al., 2015). This research also provides knowledge
about ways through which condition of black individuals suffering from mental imbalance
residing in UK.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Aim of research
To understand the help-seeking barriers faced by young black minority ethnics aged 16-
25 experiencing mental health issues in UK.
Objectives of research
 To understand the concept of black minority ethnics in UK.
 To determine the help seeking barriers for young black minority aged between 16-25
during their mental health problems.
 To analyse different ways through which help-seeking barriers can be reduced.
Concept of black minority ethnics in UK
Black minority ethnics people is the group where individuals belongs to black
community. According to Rajdeep Saandhu (2019) there are around 7.6 million people in UK
residing under category of black, Asian and ethnic minority. In UK, there is differentiation with
people who belongs to black community, they are not getting appropriate services as others in
terms of care, hospital, job opportunities, transportation, reservation, etc. This creates a gap in
society and affects performance of whole society. Back minority people known by “BME or
BAME” in UK society, so there is difference in performance in better and effective manner.
Condition of minority people is not good in UK because they are being treated equally and
facing bad behaviour of people residing in society. There is difference in behaviour with such
people, so they are facing problem in getting good education. They face issue in mobilising from
one place to other, because people have bad views for them (Palmer and et. al., 2017).
There are many youngsters who are mentally retarded due to different reasons such as
mental torture, aggression, impatient behaviour, etc., hence they need some assistance from
others. But minority people residing in UK are not able to get proper help from society. This
affects more their physical and mental health. There are many black males who are educated as
compared to whites butt still unemployed because of less job opportunities to them. People are
not ready to work with black people, so they do not get environment where they can implement
their new ideas in society. People prefers to work with white people even though working style

of black minority is more effective. When equal opportunities are available for black minority,
then there is negative impact on performance of individuals. They are not able to get mentally
stable which affects them to outshine in society (Okuda and et. al., 2016).
Sometimes people are not liked because the are not white. So it is analysed that people
are not classified ion the basis of their race but class. There is difference in working style, job
opportunities, etc. between whites and blacks. Laws are difference for them, so it affects mental
order to minority people. Age of 16-26 requires proper guidance, education for bright future, but
there is negative results of their working style. Due to gap on the basis of race, there is negative
impact on mindset of children and they are not able to make themselves mentally stable. Media
also plays crucial role in making them inferior in society so mental disorder among minority
people arise and affects their personal as well professional life.
The help seeking barriers for young black minority aged between 16-25 during their mental
health problems.
As per the views expressed by Anjum Memon, Katie Taylor and Josefin Sundin, 2018, in
the most developed regions of areas, considerable disparities are available in access to mental
health services for black and minority ethnic population. Individuals belongs from the BME
background are needs an effective and considerable mental health literacy and practical support
to increase awareness of mental health situations and combat stigma. People basically belongs
from the black and minority ethnic communities are more likely to have appropriate health
results, a shorter living expectancy have more trouble in accessing the healthcare than the
majority of population or access to mental health services in a cause of major concern. There is
noticeable ethnic fluctuation among the mental health service users between the age group of 16
to 25, around the UK, and inauspicious experiences are significantly reported among BME
service users effectively (Mustillo and Kysar-Moon, 2017). In response to this in proper manner,
the government of UK has taken up various initiatives, thus government has set out polices and
action plans in regards to The National Service Framework for Mental Health; Delivering Race
Equality in Mental Healthcare Action Plan etc. to overcome with the issue of inequality through
accessing proper services, promote mental well-being or improve primary, secondary and
community-based mental health services. There are various barriers that cause mental issue
among people like Cost or insurance, low perceived need, prejudice or discrimination, Structural

barriers, concerns over effectiveness etc. These all create mental issue among people are requires
to be overcome for providing a better living to individuals.
Different ways through which help-seeking barriers can be reduced.
According to the opinion of Amelia Gulliver, Kathleen Griffiths and Helen Christensen,
2010, In today's modern environment young adults are constantly experiences the issue of mental
disorder, yet tend not to seek help. Mental disorder is considered as a common issue among the
age group of 16 to 25, thus this is the age in which people feel different sort of issues and
changes in their life and this may also cause various issues related with mental disorder.
Depression or anxiety are majorly develops mental issues through estimates directing they affect
up to around one fifth of the population in high income countries around the globe. There are
various ways through which help-seeking issues can be reduced, some are associated as below:
Proper awareness about the problem: This is the primary aspect, thus it is required for
the people to have appropriate idea and knowledge in regards to the issue, so that proper
measures can be provided at the time of peak situation (Krebs and Turner, 2019).
Availability of resources: This is also a major concern for help seekers. Sources of help
and support are requires to be available and accessible that are effective in dealing with the
problem and the help-seeker requires to have an appropriate understanding about where and how
to get that support in proper manner to reduce the chance of issue.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research methodology is one of the important aspect which helps to provide knowledge
about different tools and techniques which are required to conduct research in appropriate and
relevant manner. In order to make clear understanding about change research and check its
reliability, framework of methodology is used. In this research, secondary information is used.
Secondary method refers to the method through which information is collected through online
sources, books, journals, etc. In this topic of help seeking barrier to minority black mentally
disabled youngsters is collected through online sources (DeLuca, 2019). This is the best way
through which researcher is able to understand different aspects by covering overall knowledge
about topic.
Research is the in- depth study of topic on the basis of which information is collected for
the purpose of giving conclusion and appropriate recommendations. So proper collection and
systematic representation gives ease for reader to understand what has been asked and presented.
Researcher use online sources, books, journals, etc. which are up to date. Secondary information
is collected from someone else, so it is essential to know relevance of this topic. While
conducting this research, secondary method for collecting information is used for literature
review. Literature review is the part in which aims and objectives are setted in introduction
chapter is evaluated through authentic source and as per author's view.
Strength of secondary method is that there is lot of data from which best can be selected.

Literature in research is collected from authentic and reliable sources. This is the best
way through which it is easy to enhance knowledge about different concept related to research
topic. There are there objectives for which information is collected from online sources which

are authentic, dated. Literature review is part of secondary information, so t is important to
collect information from sources which gives relevant and important data about research topic. It
is responsibility of researcher to make some strategy through which they can conduct
investigation in appropriate and relevant manner. Literature strategy includes- figures from
government of UK, guardian. com, website of mental health, journal of British General Practice,
Mayo clinic website, lumen-learning, etc. With the help of these official and reliable website,
researcher is able to give correct and authentic information about behaviour with minority black
ethnics suffering from mental disorder. Articles published by different library are also considered
because they are reliable and authentic as compared to others (Caplan, 2016).
Apart from above mentioned search strategy, there are some search engines as well such
as google scholar, HotBOt, Bing, Ask.com, AOL.com, DuckDuckGo, etc. With the help of these
search engine secondary collected is best and authentic. In this research, information is collected
from UK Google, so it is easy to make clear and understood about language accordingly.
Information which is specific as compared to other are collected and presented with the help of
boolean operator to show in more specific and appropriate manner. There is use of AND, OR for
making clear representation of key words such as black minority, mental disorder, etc. With the
help of such words, there is lack of repetition of words. This is the part of professional
representation but this makes investigation absolute and proper. For future use or for referring
research to someone other, then knowledge about search engines, boolean operators are relevant
and gives good impression.
There are some exclusions in this research such as not covering people residing outside
UK. This covers only youngsters between age of 16-25, nothing about population because
information is collected from secondary sources between 2010 to 2019 (Byron and et. al., 2017).
Apart from this there are some inclusions as well such as this covers complete
information about mentally retarded people, reason behind it, ways through which they can deal
with such issues. Data is collected from dated and author's page, so reliable is more.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Ethical considerations refers to the factors which has to be considered to maintain ethics
and norms for conduct research activities which are acceptable in industry. When investigation is
done in appropriate and reliable manner, then it is clear to understand policies as per change
These aspects are important because of change in plans and policies. As information is collected
through secondary sources, so ethical approval from respondents is not required. Apart from this
there are some ethical aspects such as confidentiality, proper storage, honesty, etc. While
collecting information related to research is systematic and authentic manner, then it gives
collect and reliable information about help seeking behaviour with black minority suffering from
mental disorder (Brown and et. al., 2016).
While collecting information, confidentiality has to be maintained regarding actual facts
and figures because this may give adverse impact on reader. All the team mates are aware about
reasons for which research is conducted ad topic is clear to them. So it is easy for them to collect
authentic and reliable information. All the information shown in literature review as part of
secondary source of data is collected from reliable sources which are authentic and dated.
Citation is done wherever required because this makes information reliable and absolute.
