Advanced Research: Stress and Nurses in COVID-19 Pandemic

This research proposal investigates the critical issue of stress among nurses and healthcare staff dealing with COVID-19 patients. The study aims to examine the factors contributing to stress, identify the different types of psychological disorders experienced, and explore the elements leading to sustained stress in this vulnerable group. The methodology includes a positivist research philosophy, a descriptive research design, and both probability and non-probability sampling techniques, with a sample size of 100 healthcare professionals and 50 nurses. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews, with both primary and secondary data sources being utilized. Ethical considerations such as informed consent and necessary approvals are highlighted. The analysis involves converting data into percentages and numeric forms, as well as a thematic approach for qualitative data. The work plan and references are also provided, offering a comprehensive view of the research design and its importance in addressing the mental health challenges faced by healthcare professionals during the pandemic.

STRESS AMONG NURSES
AND STAFF DEALING WITH
COVID-19 PATIENTS

 Stress can arise from situations or event that can make a person feel angry,
frustrated or also nervous.
 Coronavirus disease also known as the COVID-19, is a diseases that has been
recently identified by the World Health Organization as an infectious pandemic
disease (Duan& Zhu, 2020).
 Coronavirus has caused stress among everyone especially among the heath care
professional who are mostly affected by it including- the doctors, nurses, front line
staff and others.
 One recent study had been conducted by Xiao et al., (2020) in order to understand
the effect of social support on the quality of sleep of the medical staff or healthcare
professionals treating the patients with Coronavirus disease 2019 or Covid-19.
 The results showed:
 The health care professional were facing stress and anxiety in dealing with the
Covid-19 patients
 It was affecting their sleep quality and self-efficacy negatively.

Excessive demand of service:
 There is an excessive demand for the health
care professional for dealing with the Covid-
19 patients.
 The excessive demand is also causing stress
among the health care professional
because they are required
to do many task at the same
time (Pambuccian, 2020).
Literature Review

 The stress of the nurse and other health care professionals, dealing with
covid-19 patients is increasing because they are not being provided
sufficient safety measures at their workplaces (Chauhan et al., 2020).
 Their stress is enhanced when the question themselves whether they
are bringing the infection home.
 Moreover those nurses who are single mothers find it even more difficult
to go to work when there is no one at their home for looking after their
children.
Lack of infrastructure for operations of employees
 There is lack of proper infrastructure for the operations of the employees
which is enhancing the stress faced by the nurses and other medical
staff.
 The nurses union in many countries is demanding for improving the
safety measures being offered to the nurses because they are being
offered minimum support and there is lack of PPE or personal protective
equipment (Millar, 2020).

 The major reasons for the spread of the disease among the

 Their lack of awareness of the WHO rules and regulations
that clearly mentions’ the rights and responsibilities of the
health care (Starace & Ferrara M).

 While people are finding it difficult to stay home, doctors,
nurses and other health care professionals do not have this
opportunity of staying home such that they could shield
themselves from the diseases (Guest).
 As a result they have to distance themselves from their
families.

The main aim of the paper is to understand the factors leading to
stress and psychological disorders among the nurses, staff and
other health care professional dealing with Covid-19 Patients.
Objectives are:
 To examine the factors leading to stress among the nurses,

Research questions

 The research philosophy that will be used for the
purpose of this study includes- the positivist
research philosophy.
 The positivist research philosophy is based on the
belief that an objective way can be used for the
purpose of understanding the social world.
 The researcher will dissociate themselves from
any personal values and then works independently
in an objective way (Thomas et al., 2020).
Philosophical stance

 For the purpose of this study, descriptive research design
will be used because it can help in gaining detailed ideas
about the existing concepts and theories.
 For this study both probability and non-probability sampling
techniques will be used.
 Further simple random sampling method will be used for
this study as it can help in gaining better understanding of
the topic and also help in ensuring that the paper is biases
free by selecting the sample randomly.
 The sample size for this study will include about 100 health
care professionals who will be surveyed and about 50
nurses will be interviewed for expressing their point of view
on the research topic and the study.
Research design & Sampling
method

 For the purpose of this study both the primary and
secondary method of data collection will be used.
 Primary data will be collected for the research
through surveys and interviews with the selected
sample.
 The secondary data on the other hand will be
collected through sources that are already
published such as the online platform and other
printed forms including the hospital records, WHO
Reports and records.
Instruments

 It is necessary for researchers to follow strict guidelines
while carrying out the entire research to avoid any
unethical activity.
 The prior consent of the participants of the survey will be
collected in order to ensure that each and every
participant took part in the survey willingly.
 In case of permission from any responsible authority the
same will be collected.
 For instance for this study the approval of Saudi Ministry
of Health will be taken for collection of data from nurses
and other health care professional.
Ethical Considerations

 For analyzing the quantitative data, the data will be
converted into percentages and numeric for better
comparison of the collected data with previous years
figures.
 Further the percentages and numeric can be converted
into graphs for easy understanding and better
interpretation of the data.
 For the purpose of analyzing the qualitative data, a
thematic approach will be understood.
 A thematic analysis is used for focusing on the patterns
and themes within data.
