CE 3.1 Project Information
Name of the project: Design and Construction of 5 Storey Residential House
Location of the project: Islamabad, Pakistan
Project Duration: Please fill
Organization: Unique Builders
Role and Designation during the time: Chief Civil Engineer
CE 3.2 Project Background
CE 3.2.1 Characteristics of the project
The rapid emersion of the new technologies has made the construction of the
buildings much easier and efficient. The several structures that are ranging from the simple
ones and the complex ones such as multi storied buildings are easily constructed with these
technologies. The structures of the buildings are eventually subjected to several loads such as
uniformly varying load, concentrated load, dynamic force and these are considered in the
during phase. During the execution of this project, I have provided the compact design and
then constructed a 5 storey residential house in Islamabad, Pakistan. I checked that the safety
of the respective reinforced concrete building was completely dependent on the initial
architecture as well as structural configuration of the entire building. I have used the software
of ETABS for the proper designing and analysis of this building. As the temperature in
Islamabad often falls to extremely low, I made sure that the housing building was under the
lateral loading effect of heavy wind. This would prevent the people from falling sick. I
selected three beams of 230x450mm, 230x600mm and 230x750mm here.

CE 3.2.2 Objectives developed for the project
This project of the Design and Construction of 5 Storey Residential House was one of
my major projects in engineering career. I was working as a civil engineer in Unique Builders
and suddenly got this project. I did the structural analysis to determine the structural
behaviour of the project and then predicted the respective responses of various structural
components. Therefore, for obtaining accurate results from the project, I eventually
developed few objectives, which are given below:
ï‚· To propose a compact design of the 5 storied residential house in Islamabad Pakistan.
ï‚· To determine the structural behavior for predicting the responses of the various
structural elements for load effect.
ï‚· To utilize ETAB software for proper analysis and designing of the 5 storied building.
ï‚· To use AutoCAD software for drawing and reinforcement detailing of the project of
this building.
ï‚· To design the structural elements such as slab, beam, footing and column manually.
ï‚· To compare and contrast my obtained results with the theoretical data.
ï‚· To compare the results obtained from the software of ETABS with the manual
method.
ï‚· To use SAP2000 software for analysis of structural systems in both static and
dynamic loads.
CE 3.2.3 My area of work
I was hired as the Chief Civil Engineer in this project. Being an experienced civil
engineer, it was quite easy for me to propose a suitable design for the residential house. I was
working as the director in Unique Builders. I even determined the project costs by the
calculation of labours, materials as well as related costs. With the help of SAP2000 software,
I made the structural analysis of this building. I was also assigned for solving the various

issues that were being faced in the project and enhance collaborative group work
subsequently.

CE 3.2.5 My responsibilities throughout the project
For completing the task of this project, I was assigned for the work of providing
compact design of the 5 storied housing building in Islamabad, Pakistan. I even studied the
project concepts, models, architectural drawings and then determined the construction
methods of the various mega projects. I also prepared the engineering design after collecting
as well as studying the reports, drawings, blueprints, maps and aerial photographs. I tested the
soil compositions, hydrological characteristic and terrain for the associated geologic as well
as topographical data. I also monitored the changes in designing and then prepared the
feasibility study by the analysing engineering design and assembling the data. I analysed
structural systems for both static and dynamic loads with the help of SAP2000 software and
prepared the engineering document by the respective specifications of developing
construction, schedules and plans with MS-Project software. I confirmed the adherence to the
specifications of construction as well as safety standard by simply monitoring or checking the

progress of project and validating the calculation. I also had the responsibility of maintaining
the project database by certain computer programs and completing the backups.
CE 3.3 Distinctive Activity
CE 3.3.1 Comprehending the Theory of Project
In the project, I have undertaken the theory of advanced construction and structural
planning. For the beam and column details, I have taken 3 beams as well as 3 columns.
Beam Number Size
Beam 1 230 x 450mm
Beam 2 230 x 600mm
Beam 3 230 x 750mm

For the slab in this project, I have taken the membrane type and the thickness was of
150mm. The respective loads in the ETABS software was eventually defined as the static
load cases and in the load cases, I selected the dead load of the wall of 230mm thickness of
13.8KN/m and the live load of 4KN/m2. Finally, for the floor finishing, I got the load
calculation of 1.5 KN/m2.

The structural details of the RCC floor is given below:

CE 3.3.2 Engineering knowledge and skills applied in the project
I have properly used my understanding of core civil engineering in Design and
Construction of 5 Storey Residential House. As the chief civil engineer, I had to provide the
design of the building for proper analysis. For this purpose, I have applied my knowledge of
material science and engineering. For the soil analysis, I have used my knowledge of
designing of hydraulic structures. Moreover, I have also utilized my engineering knowledge

of building technology and construction engineering. To determine the load effects on the
physical structures as well as its components, I have applied my knowledge of structural
analysis.
CE 3.3.3 Accomplishment and Task Performed
For the accomplishment of this project, I had to make the soil survey report. I
conducted some of the major tests like direct shear test or shear parameter, oven dry test or
water content and the core cutter methodology or bulk density for the soil investigation. The
soil survey report was:
Density 13.2 KN/m3
Water Content 13.78%
Cohesion, C 9 KN/m2
Angle of the shearing resistance 200
Safe bearing capacity of the soil 200 KN/m2
Table 3: Report of Soil Survey
For the powerful and intuitive graphical interfaces that were coupled with modelling,
design and analytical procedures, I integrated them with ETABS software. Moreover, I
converted the CAD drawings into the models of ETABS. For the 3D modelling of the project,
I have used SAP2000 software.

CE 3.3.4 Identified issues and their solutions
3.3.4.1 Issues
One of the problems, which I have confronted in this project was estimating the cost
of this project. The team member, who was given the responsibility to estimate the cost, did it
completely wrong and the total costs were much higher than our budget. This was mainly
because that member took the wrong rate of 1sqft for drawing room. He had written the rate
of 900/sqft and hence the total cost exceeded budget. The second issue that I have faced here
was while doing the analysis of the 3D model of this building. The shear force diagram was
not correct and hence the result was erroneous.
3.3.4.2 Solutions
To solve the first issue faced in this project, I did the estimation completely by
myself. I pointed out the fault and then selected the correct sqft of 770 rate in the ground
floor. Finally, my issue was resolved and I was able to complete the project estimation
properly. For the next issue, I made the shear force diagram properly and then my problem
was solved.

CE 3.3.5 Plan to produce creative and innovative work
My major plan was for producing an advanced as well as original effort by effectively
working together as a group. I also subdivided our works properly and then ensured that the
individual parts are completed with efficiency.
CE 3.3.6 Collaborative Work
I as well as my project members completed the work by working collaboratively. We
organized several workshops for identifying our flaws within the project and then executed
the project perfectly. Moreover, I even arranged group meetings for this work.
CE 3.4 Project Review
CE 3.4.1 Project Overview
I have effectively ordered every material required for the project. I even documented
the results during integrating continuity tests. I have used my knowledge of SAP2000 and

ETABS software for making the structural design and analysis of the 5 storied residential
house.
CE 3.4.2 My Contribution to work
I have successfully proposed the design of 5 storied residential house in Islamabad
Pakistan, since I was the chief civil engineer. My other contribution to this project was using
software AutoCAD, ETABS and SAP2000 software for making the structural design. I even
complied with the centralised, state as well as local legal requirement by properly studying
the new and even the existing legislations and enforced requirement adherence. I even
contributed in the team-effort by perfectly accomplishing the associated results as required.
